Their slogan should be: For people who enjoy being treated like CRAP with their cuppa.
To be honest, I never managed to actually TRY the coffee. My family and I were staying in the neighbourhood and decided to give it a try after a long afternoon of walking the cobble-stoned streets of Amsterdam. Since the entire outdoor seating area (and inside the restaurant) was EMPTY, we thought we would sit down.
Unfortunately, as we made our way to one of the (all) empty tables outside, the proprietor came outside immediately and told us to move. We misunderstood, thinking he wanted us to push our strollers to the side (we had two sleeping babies with us), however, he soon made it clear that he wanted us all to take our business somewhere else. He told us that we would take up too much space from the rest of his 'business' (which was not visible to the naked eye). My wife and daughter were both upset, as the owner was very rude, hostile and dismissive.
As we go often to that street, we have noticed that the shop NEVER has any customers, and we have actually watched him (from a distance) engage in the same rude manner with other 'potential' customers.
To be quite honest, there is nothing he could put in his coffee that would make up for the offensive and boorish behaviour of this man. From the other comments listed (from Google reviews), it appears that the owner believes he runs some elite coffee club, when in fact he is just running a run-of-the-mill gimicky coffee shop. To say that he is a 'character' is being very generous. "Characters" tend to have some qualities that redeem them in some way, which this man is sorely lacking.
I am hoping the next time I return to Amsterdam, I will find some other business in his stead. Some place where everyone, not just the invisible elite, are made to feel welcome for a cup of coffee.
PLEASE DO NOT PUT ANY MONEY IN THIS MAN'S POCKET. BUY YOUR COFFEE SOMEWHERE ELSE (there is a lovely little place called Tony's just across the street).
This is the first time I have gone out of my way to write a negative review on TripAdvisor but I wanted to help others avoid having to explain to their young children about rudeness and discriminatory behaviour.
