“The most comfortable bed ever!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 weeks ago via mobile

The location was a little walk but then again it was only 10 minutes from central station and worth it to beg away from the city centre noise! Hotel was immaculately clean and as we had neither dinner or breakfast, I am only qualified to comment on the room and it was really nice. It was clean, minimalist but yet had everything we needed and my goodness, I want to take that bed home!! Need I say more! Would stay again!

This hotel is modern but some of the features are either not good quality or not thought out. We found that for a couple staying for a week it was average. The room we had did not have enough towel rails to hold two bath towels and two hand towels (It would have been ok for one of each). One day we were not issued with clean towels and it took half an hour to get new ones, we were waiting after a day's sightseeing to take a shower. No tissues were supplied. The wardrobe space was enough for one person but a squeeze for two people's clothes for a week. It would have been ok if staying for a weekend or single person on business.

The restaurant was good but as there were conferences during the week and groups at weekend then if you clashed with these in the evening you could wait up to one and quarter hours for starter as we had to on one occasion. The breakfast was good but at €37 for two it was rather expensive for toast and jam! We used to go over the road to 'Bagels and Beans' for an excellent breakfast at a third of the cost with a marvelous view of the ships going up the river.

There was a disco on the Saturday that we were there and thought that we would be disturbed by the noise but we did not hear anything due to the excellent sound proofing. The majority of the staff were very friendly and with one small exception very helpful.

The hotel is a short bus ride from Central Station and despite some of the shortcomings I would consider it again if visiting Amsterdam.

This hotel is without doubt a brilliant place to stay in! We did have to walk a bit from the railway station to the hotel, but it was worth the walk! Excellent breakfast, superb room, only pity was that I only had a nite here!

Room Tip: Higher floor to ensure that you have a view of the waters!

This hotel really is a stunner. It is slightly out of the centre and we do now have very sore feet but it's such a nice hotel. Its perfect for young couples and professionals alike. The beds are amazing and the rooms very well kept. The staff are welcoming and helpful too. The bar area is very relaxing and the cocktails are fab. It is a 15 min walk to the centre though so be prepared to get a few cabs which can be quite pricey here. There are hotels nearer the centre but a lot more expensive. Overall if you don't mind the walk I would stay here as even the pictures don't do it enough justice, there is also an outside seating area over looking the dock. We sat in the sun drinking cocktails there and they even had some entertainment on. Hope this helps :)

My daughter and I stayed on the 29/6/14 and I must say what a lovely hotel with pleasant helpful staff. We have never slept in such a comfy bed. Room was spotless and modern and breakfast very pleasing. Only one thing room was rather too hot. My daughter left her favourite jacket and have just called them and they are going to send it on too us what a relief.
Thank you room mate aitana for a lovely stay we will be back. Looking forward to getting jacket soon please?

Room Tip: We had one looking on to canal

Nicely designed and fitted out hotel in a great location, but not particularly well run. Our room came furnished with the Declaration of Human Rights but no information brochure or room service or minibar menu. The latter never appeared despite a request. Reception also forgot our breakfast, and seemed rather casual when we reminded them, offering to "put us through to the kitchen". More conscientious management and a renewed focus on customer service would be a worthwhile investment as the hotel is otherwise very pleasant.

On the outside of the building it proudly says: "New York, Miami Beach, Madrid, Barcelona, Mexico D.F., Malaga, Buenos Aires and now... Amsterdam". The "Room Mate" chain of hotels distinguishes itself with a unique style. It is a blend of simplicity, art and freshness. So I had to try.

From the outside the building looks like a library, a restaurant or a bar but certainly not like a hotel. There's no parking and no bell boy, eventhough there's more than enough room on the adjacent street. Once inside, the lobby is all about modern art and yet again simplicity.

The room is huge and looks even bigger because it is mostly empty. Apart from a wall with a 3d pattern, there's no art or any decoration, which makes the room feel cold and sterile. There's a card on the bed stating the name of the cleaning man/lady. However, the pre-printed Dutch text has two (!) mistakes in a single sentence ("het was me een genoegen uk kamer schoon te maken" should be "het was mij een genoegen uw kamer schoon te maken). The tone of all other documents is very informal, is this hotel ran by kids?

The room (#918) is so big that it would easily hold three double beds, so there's a lot of empty space about the bed. There's a very simple desk (more like a table), while a huge desk would have fitted in the room. There's a small table and a simple sofa, while a serious table and lounge would have fitted! And finally there's something that looks like a balcony but it actually just is an empty space between two layers of glass. Apparently many people have tried to enter this "balcony" because there's a huge sticker on the pivoting window that states it is not a door.

Depending on your room, you either view the city of Amsterdam or the city lake. Do ask for a high floor as the view from the lower floors is blocked by other buildings.

"Room Mate" isn't exactly a cheap hotel and that's why I noticed many items lacking. The hotel doesn't provide slippers or a robe. Internet is free, but messy. The procedure to connect differs from the one described in the welcoming document. The Internet connection is slow and unreliable. The airco can be turned off, yet there's always a noisy air vent remaining controlled by the hotel itself. The TV is modern, but doesn't offer as many channels as other TV's in a hotel in this price range.

The dinner ordered via room service was pathetic. My employer ordered me a vegetarian meal, which was so little that it was more of a snack than a meal. On the other hand: breakfast was superb with freshy squeezed orange juice and top quality freshly baked whole wheat bread.

So, is the "Room Mate" hotel an asset to Amsterdam? After staying here I'm still not sure. The concept is special, but something is missing. A hotel this outspoken should be extremely cheap, extremely well located or otherwise "extremely". But other than the unique style, there's not much special about it. Considering the price, I don't regret my choice but next time I would try a different hotel.
