“new modern hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 30, 2013

A very new and modern hotel,at reception we had to wait 15 minutes before we were checked in, the two receptionists took all of the the time dealing with one customer each, one was on the telephone for most of the time but didn't appear to be speaking to anyone, so first impression was a little disappointing.the rooms are very very nice, spacious and clean as is the bathroom,.the king size bed was exceedingly comfortable. There is no restaurant in the hotel but there are plenty of places to eat in the city, the bar staff are very attentive but the two nights we stayed the bar had no customers, the hotel lacks atmosphere, but over-all okay if you just want a base to tour Amsterdam. If we returned to Amsterdam we would use a more central hotel, there are lots to choose of the same quality.

Room Tip: ask for a room on the 10th or11th floor for excellent city views.

:Room Mate Aitana

This hotel is located within easy walking distance of the train station. As indicated in other reviews, it is new, modern and clean however the rooms do resemble an IKEA showroom. Check in was quick and easy. The person at the desk indicated it would be $100.00 euros per night and asked if that would be okay. As we had booked through Expedia at a much higher price $164.00 euros per night we thought—bonus! Our elation was short lived as upon check-out the clerk said we must pay the higher Expedia price.

Our initial room on the 11th floor overlooked the city. When we opened the door there was a man cleaning the windows and the balcony. Upon my request to have a view of the water, we were moved across the hall. This was a smaller room with no balcony but a fairly nice view slightly impeded by adjacent buildings. The room was very clean and comfortable with a modern bathroom.

We were able to have a glass of wine in the hotel bar and were served by a very friendly and helpful young man who provided information on the city of Amsterdam. This was much appreciated as our room was totally devoid of any information on either the hotel facilities or the city.

8:00 AM the next morning we were awoken by the very loud sound of drilling into metal right outside our window! Opening the curtain--two men in a cherry picker power hoist working on the outside of the building. It would have been nice of them to wait until at least 9:00 AM but then again the building is not yet complete. The restaurant is not open yet, so you must walk to other areas to purchase meals. Breakfast is provided each morning at the cost of $12.50 euros per person!

My wife and I both agreed we would not choose this hotel again should we return to Amsterdam as it really does not offer much for the price other than a place to sleep. We would instead book a hotel within the Old Center closer to restaurants and shopping and entertainment

Room Tip: Higher floors provide a view.

I must say hotel itself is nice, new and modern. Location is ok a bit far from center, but has a bus stop infront of hotel # 14 which takes you to central train station. Room is nice with large windows.

There was a false fire alarm one of the nights at 12 am midnight, it was scary, everyone went down to the lobby, and gathered outside the hotel, I was literally in panic and was shaking. WE didn't know whats going on, the HOTEL didn't do any announcement, staff didn't even bother themselves to assure guests that it was a false alarm, until we went to reception guys and told them, this is unacceptable, we need an announcement and so on.... etc. Elevators were working though shouldn't during fire alarm.

One of reception staff called MARCO, dealt with this issue incompetently and very rude. At best, should be working at back of house area for lack of communication skills with guests. Anyhow, im attaching some pictures i took during the panic we encountered at the hotel during the false alarm, and will empasize again that the staff didn't even try to go around and talk to guests to assure them it was false alarm. However the lady behind the reception, is young and very polite, she did her best, but MARCO was incharge. Again, this guy shouldn't have a direct contact with guests. I had a very bad experience and will share it on trip advisor and with my friends.

One more thing, the duty Manager at hotel, he appologized on the phone and offered this night complimentary, he was very professional, i think his name is Jose (not so sure) but he reacted in a professional way and dealt with this issue efficiently.

The Bell boy (Moroccon Nationality) should be incharge of hotel, this guy is amazing, he has the knowledge and attitude, he should have been behind the reception desk. Keep up the good work!

Thank you very much for your comments

I am very sorry about the bad experience, that you lived in our hotel the night of the fire false alarm

to be a new hotel we are in maximum security, in terms of fire alarm. This means that even if a false alarm, the system immediately activates the alarm. In addition we have taken steps to make the situation lived by you will not be repeated.

I am Borja Barrio, the duty manager, I talked to you by phone the night of the alarm. If you need any things from us please do not hesitate to ask me. I leave my phone and my email, 0031 653 794 075 b.barrio @ room-matehtels.com

I apologize again and hope that this experience will not stop you to visit us again

best regards

Spent our last leg of our Europe tour in Amsterdam and stayed in Room Mate Aitana for 2 days. It is located behind the Central Train station part of the new reclaim island. It was opening promotion so for the price we paid, it was a darn good deal for Amsterdam.

As mentioned by other reviewers this in indeed a new hotel, with huge rooms. so you can expect all rooms furnishing all brand new and ultra clean. Comfortable bed and pillows. Restaurants are not open yet, so you can just have breakfast at the hotel. It is close to the Central Train station - 7-10mins walk to be exact. Maybe a slight hassle if you need to trudge your luggage from the station to Hotel. Getting taxis from hotel is not that easy so suggest you ask the Reception to help you call and it does that take a while for taxis to come. If you are planning to go somewhere that is not walkable, it is advisable to leave early so that you won't be late.

It might not be finished yet but when it is I imagine the price will go up.
If you want a good location and comfort this is spot on and has some great river/city views.
5 minutes walk from the main railway station and the p&o ferries drop off zone at Lovers rendezvous - 10 minutes stroll to Anne Frank's house/city centre.
The hotel itself and the rooms are VERY modern. You won't get quaint here but you will get quirky functional comfort and amazing floor to ceiling windows. The beds are divinely squishy. There's a minibar and the usual things like safe, ironing board, hair dryer etc. The shower was willing but a little weak but the toiletries were lovely. There's a plug point next to the mirror in the bathroom for the hair dryer/straighteners. (Surprising how many hotels still don't think of this)
Just a note of caution if you're travelling with kids.....You can access ALL the channels on the tv so you might want to get to the remote before they do to avoid any embarrassing questions.
We arrived 3 hours before check in time to leave our bags but were given our room. Very accommodating staff. Great stay.

Very close to the central station and with nice and spacious rooms the hotel is exactly what you would want after a tiring day in Amsterdam.
Nice and comfortable beds with clean toilets, the newly opened hotel is certainly going to get very popular.
The only dampener is the fact that they currently have very limited eating options in the hotel so it's advisable to have your mean before you head back

Room Tip: Exit from the rear end of the central station and start walking to your left.... 10 mins and you'...

We would have really given the hotel 3.5 stars as they are working through the remaining elements of the build. The surroundings are marred by work in progress but the interior has the much quoted wow factor. Our room was a junior suite and spacious, light and clean with a really comfortable bed. The shower would have been superb if the thermostat had been functional. I don't think I am a convert to designer armchairs to live with but they were fun for a weekend. The views would have been better if the hotel hadn't stuck somewhat opaque advertising on the outside of some of the windows.
The staff were friendly and helpful although the bartender was lacking in knowledge of the local drink. Breakfast was fine but not special and turned out to be priced reasonably to reflect this.
The immediate location on a newly constructed island housing only amazing buildings is fascinating but the walk to the Jordaan or the station is not pretty. However it is within walking distance of canals, shops and restaurants.
I would like to try again when the restaurant is open and all the work is finished.
