“a very recommended hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 10, 2014

Just got back from our europe trip.
stayed in this hotel for 2 nights and booked for 3 rooms.

We were very pleased that we made booking for this hotel.
eventhough there are a slight inconvenience when we check-in as the rooms were not all ready. we had to go back to the receptionist 3 times to check-in each room at a different times.

Location: just opposite the central station. however, quite far from the city centre
Room: room size very good for europe standard. very clean.
Food: good
Staff: good

overall, very pleased!

Stayed at this hotel last night for the first time. Firstly, I am happy to say I was ungraded to a fabulous room 1008 or suite really on the first floor at the front. I was concerned when I walked in about the traffic noise as the hotel faces the Centraal station so is on that busy corner. But the sound proofing and double glazing worked wonderfully. The hotel is uber trendy and cool, so don't stay here if you like Grand Old Budapest Hotels. The bar is relaxed and lounging, and nice not to have W style booming music beating at you. Breakfast was super friendly and simple but lovely. Overall a good choice if you like Uber cool.

The stay was overall very pleasant. Our only complaint was about the organisation of the breakfast. You have to order your eggs as well as the coffee and the juice, resulting in annoying waiting periods (to be served, to be refilled...).

We had a very pleasant stay at the hotel - the room was large and comfortable (albeit a bit "spacy") and the personnel very helpful. However, the breakfast could have been better - food was good (a little limited selection though), but since drinks and all hot items had to be made to order (eggs, bacon, coffee, tea, juice etc.) it took too long time to get the food. Breakfast personnel did their best, but were a little stressed I think.

We had a room on the inside looking over a small unused court hers so had no problem with noise whatsoever. Breakfast buffet was excellent value, able to choose many items to be cooked freshly and room service also available for no extra charge. The hotel was beautiful decorated throughout, very modern, and in a great location, close to the rain station and within short selling distance of the main tourist areas in Amsterdam.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 6, 2014

My experience was more like 3.5 but I decided to give it 3 as there were some issues that would need to be addressed if it tries to live up to its 5 star hotel designation.

Location cannot be beat. It is across the street from the central location and traveling to/from the airport or any part of the city is pretty easy. Interior is super modern/posh, which is to my liking. Lobby, restaurant, and lounge are impeccable and gym more than adequate. Staff was friendly, attentive and dare I say, informal. It took me some time to get used to it since I was used to being treated a bit differently. Room is spacious for an European standard and again super modern. I think this makes it really hard for the hotel to give "luxury" feel other hotels in the same class may have. Complimentary breakfast was also very tasty and generous.

Staff seemed to be not well trained (some receptionists and housekeeping staff). When I checked in, I was the only customer. The receptionist was obviously new but it took her about 10 minutes to complete the check-in process, which was exhausting after 15 hours of flight and lost luggage. With very informal attitude, it did not leave a good initial impression. Check-out was faster but it still took them solid 5 minutes.

The hotel has some sound proofing issues. I am relatively sensitive to noise (especially when I am heavily jet-lagged and need some nap time) and if you are like me, you should avoid room 3018. It faces one of the main streets and tram stop is right in front of it. As a result, you would hear tram bell ringing every 3 minutes or so. Also, room door to hallway does nothing to diffuse noise. 3018 is located next to linen/staff room and you hear the door opening/closing every 5-10 min in the afternoon. One day, it was also a hang out spot for housekeepers. They were chatting/laughing non-stop for about 20 min and I had to ask them to turn it down or talk elsewhere. Also, a little bit further away from the hallway, they piled up dirty room service dishes. They were left there at least for 12 hours and the hallway smelled really bad for a while. I guess it wasn't visible except from my room but they should have taken care of that sooner.

Also, you need to place your bathroom matt carefully. Otherwise your toilet floor will be flooded. Shower room is rather plastic and feels very cheap in my opinion.

Overall, I had a good stay (I know I complained a lot!). The hotel gets many things right but needs to tighten up the loose ends if it wants to be the "it" hotel. I may return given that it is one of the better hotel points redemption options in the city (yes I was staying on points) but if I am paying out of my pocket, I would rather stay at Andaz or Pulitzer unless they address the issues mentioned above.

Dear TravelMania1982,

Thank you so much for your review and taking the time to give us feedback on how we perform.

We regret to hear that not everything was up to standards especially in terms of the efficiency at the Front Desk, the quietness of your room and the cleanliness of the hallway on the 3rd floor during your stay. Please accept our apologies for the inconvenience this might have caused.

We will use this feedback for future improvements and to gain the "it" factor!

Although you do not easily get a second chance to make a first impression we hope we can welcome you back as our guest someday soon. Let's make sure we will exceed your expectations this time.

Warm regards,
