“Fantastic”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2014 via mobile

First of all the staff in this hotel are so friendly and helpfull and happy! They couldn't,t do enough for us to make sure our stay was wonderfull, there are unusuall pieces of art all around the hotel, which make for interesting conversation. The restaurant served dinner tapas style and the waiters recommended some lovely sharing plates for me and my mother. It,s not the cheapest, but then again you get what you pay for,and it's also in the middle of the city across from Central Station so everything is easily accessible .I can't praise the staff enough and there are certainly a few hotels closer to home that could learn a thing or 2 from them...Fantastic!!

Dear Kim W,

Thank you for your review. Great to hear that we scored highly on the value for money! As for the Art, we have choosen a partnership with Joep van Lieshout and I could not agree more that his work encourages interesting conversations.

Thank you for your great compliment and we'd love to welcome you back whenever you are in Amsterdam again.

Warm regards,

5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2014

Just returned from a long weekend at this hotel.
We travel extensively and have stayed at quiet a few 5* hotels over the years, including some top properties. 5* hotels can be a bit 'boring and pretentious' but that is completely the opposite of what we experienced here. Being young people, we just loved the relaxed and friendly atmosphere of the Art'otel.
Check inn : We arrived close to 2pm and unfortunately the room wasn't ready. Even though we were offered a twin room for immediate check inn, we decided to wait for the king room that we booked. Not a big deal because the room was ready 30min later and waiting in the lobby wasn't really a problem for us as there is free wifi and tons of interesting art/architecture books to read in. The very friendly receptionist also showed us around the hotel to kill the waiting time. A nice touch! Speaking about staff, all the staff we met were very professional and friendly, but without the stuffiness that we have experienced at some other luxury hotels. From the porters to the receptionists to the breakfast staff, we always felt that we were 'in good hands'.

The room: We stayed in room 3025 and had a view onto the courtyard of the hotel and we were very happy with what we got. A spacious room, with a half open bathroom (that is more or less the norm in hotels these days), a kingsize bed (2m x 2m) with a memory foam topper and all the extras you could want (including an Illy coffee maker). And not to forget an airconditioner that acually worked (very welcome when it is 34°C outside!). It was hard to believe that we were in the middle of a busy city because it was as quiet as anything! Unfortunately both of us slept bad during the 2 nights we were there, but I guess a bed is a very personal thing (even though I am used to sleeping on a memory foam bed at home). Nice Elemis toiletries and turndown service at night. Everything was clean too.

The hotel itself: If you like art and design, like we do, you will love the place, it really is an 'experience hotel' and behind every corner there are other interesting features to be found with loads of quirky details and humor. They clearly want to make a difference from what most other 5* hotels offer/do and it certainly worked for us! An example: during breakfast most of the staff members were dressed in 'their own' clothes and not afraid of showing their tattoos or personality, opposed to the sometimes boring uniforms that are worn by hotel staff members in other hotels. It just created that 'friendly, young city vibe' that makes this hotel so different.

Speaking about the breakfast: It was perfect for us, while the variety was maybe not as huge as we have seen in other hotels, the quality was perfect and I think that the a la carte system works well, they did lovely scrambled eggs (opposed to the often rubbery powdered eggs that many other hotels serve), nice bacon, lovely suasage etc. The buffet items were also replenished all the time (they had lovely croissants, fresh fruits, lovely cheese 'chunks', nice quality ham etc., you definitely wont't leave hungry!). Fresh orange juice and nice coffee was served at your table. The restaurant were the breakfast was served is also very cosy and we really enjoyed our time there!

Facilities : The pool was quiet nice, and the sauna huge, the nice thing is that these facilities are open 24hrs (even though the staff has to open the door if you want to go late). We decided to have a swim at 11:30pm on saturday night and we had the place to ourselves (even though the sauna was switched off, who wants to go in a sauna when it feels like a sauna outside??). One remark : we went to the sauna/pool twice and there were never any clean towels available, which was a bit annoying because we had to put on our bathrobes, being completely wet from swimming... all the way back to our room. Wifi in the hotel was available everywhere and it worked well and was reasonably fast. Without any annoying log in pages, just connect-and-surf. Well done!!

Location: Right opposite the central station, maybe not the most 'posh' location for some people, we like it because it is close to everywhere (Amsterdam is not that big), always lively and easy to connect to public transport. We also love Asian food and the nicest Asian restaurants in the city happen to be in this area so it is perfect for us :-))

We hope to return in the nearby future and if you are looking for a top hotel that is slightly different from the 'standard, dull 5* city hotel' you will love it as much as we did!

Room Tip: We asked for a street view first but were very glad to have a courtyard view room as it was soo quie...

Couldn't fault the hotel. Great location and so handy for everything. Stayed with mum in 60s and she loved the vibe and peacefulness.

Had 5th floor art room with a view of Central station. It was beautiful and clean. Glad we got a room with a view as it added to our holiday. We also spend a lot of time in the room so having one that is a little bigger makes a difference. Great shower and peekaboo screen was an added design feature. Free wifi was excellent and high speed. Staff were attentive and friendly. Also knowledgable. The hotel was beautifully designed and the random art added something. Loved the carpet with the messages on it in the rooms and common areas.

Touches like the Elmis products for turn down service made it.

Look out for the discount sight seeing card which the hotel offer.

Very chilled and vibrant hotel and a service was strong and efficient. Nice touches like popcorn when having a drink. Although busy still felt like you had your own space.

Negative:
Breakfast was good but this is an area that they could improve. Limited choice and the sausages were very high meat content which is not to everyone's taste. Had to pay extra for juice and other things which are standard at other hotels.

Going to swimming pool was difficult as had to go through dining area to get there. The meant that you couldn't go in a robe but had to change in the facilities.

Swimming pool not thermal or heated as may appear. Cold unless swimming actively!

Booked again to return in september. New fav hotel.

Dear Fairylindz,

Thank you for your review. Wow: great to hear that you've already made plans to come back and visit us in September!

We appreciate your feedback very much in terms of the access to the Active Club and the variety of the breakfast. Great to know that you are coming back in September so that we can exceed your expectations this time. I'm afraid that we cannot change the entrance location to the Active Club, but we can change the breakfast experience.

A nice, classical, well equiped and clean holet, well localized in the downtown, well served by nearby shopping centre and public transportation, a good and very gentle staff, but with a comment of poor breakfast with very small variety....

We had a wonderful time at the art'otel the week we stayed there.

Location: it is across from Amsterdam Centraal. Wonderful restaurants and pubs of all kinds and for all budgets are within walking distance, as are museums and shopping.

Hotel staff: the staff was very cordial and quick to help, especially the front desk and housekeeping.

Room: the large and comfortable rooms each center around a piece of art, and they are funky. The bed was really, really comfortable. The bathrooms are European, so the toilet and shower are separated only by smoked glass. This is made more noticeable by the open design of the overall room, but we did not find it to be an issue. We had an outward-facing room, and there was very little noise from the street - which is remarkable, because we were there during the World Cup, so there were many people out and about.

Public spaces: the restaurant, bar and library areas are very comfortable and stylish. The pool and fitness area are both excellent. One thing to note for parents: much of the current art in the library and other public spaces is focused on fertility, so it may provoke some memorable family conversations.

Overall rating: We very much enjoyed our stay and definitely recommend the hotel. I'd rate the hotel five stars except that, each night we stayed, we ordered a container of ice, a dessert and some bottled water. Each night, room service delivered the dessert and water without the ice bucket. Five straight days, we asked the room service person to go back downstairs and bring us ice :-).
