This review is about a recently opened second Nam Kee restaurant, located at the Marie Heinekenplein. I often see large crowds here but never stepped inside - even though I live in the area.
Getting Chinese food in Amsterdam can be kind of a challenge, because most Chinese restaurants actually are run by Chinese but serve a mixture of Malay / Indonesian food - a heritage of Holland's colonial past.
But lately more and more Chinese restaurants pop up that serve Chinese / Hong Kong style dishes and Nam Kee is the best known of 'm.
I really liked my first taste of Nam Kee - I travel to Asia a lot and really like local Chinese food. Nam Kee will serve you what you're likely to get in an Asian food court. No Western Style luxury but basic service & most important: good food!
I disagree with some of the previous comments where the service is described as "non-friendly". They're actually very friendly - but I guess you must understand Chinese a bit to notice, it comes in subtle gestures and body language different than the (forged) Western style of hospitality.
No-nonsense, good food, good people, many Chinese clientele, value for money: it's what I look for when on Holiday and now I have it right in my lovely neighborhood..
