“Studio Recar: A hidden gem in Amsterdam”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2014

Located at the theatre and museum district ( Museumplein) Studio Recar was perfect for our family of four. You are basically renting a nice apartment for much less than you would pay in a hotel room. If you have little kids, like I do, you want space and the apartment provides that. Mr. Recar is a gem himself. He is extremely helpful and runs his apartments well, with love and attention to details. My little ones adored him and had to stop at his studio every time to greet him when we left and when we arrived. The apartment I rented had a queen size bed ( American Queen, probabaly European King) and a separate room with two single beds. The apartment also has a dining area, a living-room kind of area, a kitchen and a small bathroom ( this maybe one of the few flaws this apartment have, because since there is no space, your sink is also the kitchen's sink). It is very spacious. Mr. Recar has the refrigerator filled with basic breakfast items: eggs, cheese, ham, yogurt, butter, water and juice. He also provides bread, dry cereal and fruits. The apartment is decorated by Mr. Recar's art. You can park in the street if you come by car ( it's cheaper) or there is a private parking nearby. The tram is also very close.

We stayed at this B&B with our two young children from Dec. 23rd - 26th, 2012. The owner, Recar, advertised the studio as non-smoking and that was far from the truth. As soon as we walked into the building we were overwhelmed with the smell of smoke. We were staying on the 2nd floor but Recar permitted smoking on the ground level. Like many smokers, he did not realize just how bad he and the entire place smelled. He also did not seem to grasp the very basic fact that smoke rises. It seems that others have complained about Recar's false advertising because the studio booklet states that smoking is not permitted since he will not be able to rent it out to the next guests. Our Dutch friends were shocked at the stench and felt we should get a refund. Recar's solution was to buy some candles which only made things worse. Other negatives were that the bathroom was extremely small and the shower was dirty to boot. On the positive, food for breakfast was refilled everyday. Also there were many toys for our kids to play with. Unfortunately, the damage done to their health from the secondhand smoke outweighed the benefit of toys. We will never, ever, never willingly return to Recar's wilted Fleur.
