“Great choice!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2013

Nice and quiet hotel. Very good service at front desk. Good location - close to the metro. The breakfast was nice and peaceful, the room was clean and cozy.
If you need a kosher area - go for it, it's perfect.
We had a wonderful time!

We stayed there for 2 nights at a weekend for sightseeing and visiting a concert at Carré Theater Amsterdam.

Nice and extraordinary clean rooms in typical Holiday Inn Express manner. Breakfast is more than sufficient. All you need is available. Half our tram ride to city center Amsterdam. Tram station within 2 minutes walking distance. Tram frequency appr. each 6 minutes until 1 a. m.
Possibility to rent directly in the hotel.

This is a very modern, well appointed hotel suited for those whose object is to stay a comfortable night, and has less use for a full-service restaurant. The rooms are well equipped and cofortable, and the bathroom were spotlessly clean. The hotel is situated somewhat outside the center of Amsterdam, but conveniently near Schiphol airport. The communication to central Amsterdam is excellent, both subway and tram lines bring you to Amsterdam central station within about 25 minutes (the subway in less than that). There were some hitches during our stay, as timetables and routes were altered due to tunnelling work, but this was a temporary nuisance, as was also the falling out of a powerline on the rail service back to Schiphol. The staff was very serviceminded and helpful. The price was extremely reasonable (through Expedia), and therefore I can wholeheaterdly recommend this small gem.

A pleasant tram ride from the Central Station, this one-year-old provides everything. The breakfast and breakfast area/lobby are sparkling clean. Used to States side HI Express properties, we were delighted to find healthy breakfast choices and great variety. What the room(217) lacks --the ice bucket/ice machine feature, microwave, ironing equipment, and fridge, it makes up for with quiet. The staff greet everyone upon arrival, and the little strip mall adjoining the building has a fine supermarket, a drugstore, and some gelato/pastry offerings. They didn't have room for us the third night, so we've moved in town to a five-star hotel. If we return to Amsterdam, we will book early enough to secure a stay at this HI Express Amsterdam - South.

Room Tip: 217 worked for us!

We have just returned from a three night break in Amsterdam staying at the Holiday Inn. I found the hotel fantastic, the staff were so friendly, helpful and professional and spoke multi languages, the room was spacious, very clean and modern and fresh towels were provided every day. I agree the hotel is out of the central area however I found this to be a positive, it was nice to return to a quiet area. The metro and tram stop is a few minutes walk and run frequently up to around 12.00am, then the night buses take over. This hotel is superb if you are attending an event at the Ziggo Dome or Amsterdam Arena. There is a local supermarket called Jumbos and a chemist/bakery etc., near by and the Holiday Inn allowed us to eat our food in the breakfast area that we purchased from Jumbo's. The breakfast gives a good choice with cereals, toast, eggs, meat and cheese, croissants and rolls, with hot drinks and cold drinks available also. I found it quite expensive to eat out in Amsterdam so it was welcoming that the breakfast was included in the room rate. There are also computers available with free access to the internet and a bar/small lounge area. We will definitely be returning to this hotel for our next planned trip to Amsterdam.

Room Tip: Tip on travelling: We purchased a 72 hour tourism card for travel on trams, metro and buses (cost of...

PROS
clean
very quiet area
staff was wonderfull and spoke multiple languages
large rooms (by european standards)
very nice breakfast- more than just usual pastries and cereal
strong wifi, and two computers in lobby
bikes to rent (affordable)
very close to tram/metro, and they sell tickets at front desk
15 min to city center and musuems by public transportation

CONS
bit far from city center
not much food or shops open near at night

IN summary, this was a very affordable alternative to the smaller, more expensive lodging in the city center.

This hotel is suitable for a maximum 3 nights stay...but let me be more specific: it is a very clean hotel, decent, the room is big enough for two adults, the bathroom is definitely OK...in short, a very good accommodation.

And yes, it is far from the city center but you have direct access to tram 5 and metro 51. The tram is at a 3 minutes walk and it takes you from the hotel trough the main city highlights and to the Central Station (end of line). I think that tram n. 5 has the best route...because it gives you access to everything...the museum square (where you find most of the museums), the flower market, the Dam Square, the main canals (Prinsengracht, Keizersgracht etc), the central station (for transportation and canal cruise). We found it very helpful.

The disadvantage with the location is that at midnight the public transportation stops (they have some night lines but this lines don't help you...the hotel is far). This means that you have to be in time for the last tram, which leaves Central Station at 24.00. Of course, you can take a taxi, but this depends on your budget.

Now, there is one more thing about the hotel: the breakfast is truly express. You won't die of hunger but you don't have a lot to choose from. The cheese and ham are packed (like two slices per package), but don't worry ...they're good to eat...so give them a try. Overall, the breakfast is somehow near basic.

Tips:

- you can buy a transport ticket for 12 hours from the hotel, but in the tram station you have a ticket machine where you can buy with your card whatever kind of ticket you wish (for 12 hours, for 24, 72...)

- if you want to go from the hotel to the airport you can take bus 199...you will find the station near Jumbo supermarket (you'll see it), next to the tram station. It comes twice per hour and it is 4 euro per person. The journey to the airport takes 45 minutes. With a taxi it takes 5 or 10, but you will surely pay more than 4 euro. Or you could go by tram 5 to the Central Station and take the train to the airport. As you like.

Oh, and you have free wifi!
