I have been to 717 twice and found it a beautiful place to come back to after hours of walking. It is a strange mixture of elegance (a beautiful canal house, beautiful colours) and quirky (some of the over the top house contents) and scarcely seems like a hotel. The service is not obsequious and superb. Strongly reccomended.Only two down points:I went alone and that made it very expensiveThere were paper not cloth napkins in the breakfast room, reducing the sense of pampered luxury.

this is what i have i have been waiting to find in amsterdam; a well-located intimate hotel with luxury, personality and uber-style but without attitude. all the rooms are stunning, we stayed in the tolkien room which is gorgeous. it is painted a dark orangey-brown and creates a very warm environment. the bathroom is solid and the tub is deep. our first evening was a rainy chilly night, and sitting down on the grey flannel huge sofa i thought i was in heaven. simply put, the room had such a dramatic impact that we just sat there, first laughing which then progressed into a dreamy silence. honestly, we would have been happy to stay in the room all weekend, and just have our friends come visit us, which in the end is what we did. the staff will bring you wine and snacks to the room, and there is a mini bar all of which is included in the room rate. breakfast is included in the rate too, and although i didn't sample it my companion raved about the food and the dom they offer along with it. the staff were very easy on the eye and genuine, equally happy to indulge their guests in a conversation or provide discreet service. to sum up, i feel i am crazy to write this review because with 8 rooms it won't take much to fill up, but since no one else has i feel 717 deserves to be recognized here. this place is truly what hospitality is all about - do yourself a favour and checkin.
