“A perfect location at a perfect price.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 25, 2009

We booked the Old Quarter as we were on a lad's weekend & wanted to be close to Central Station, Dam Square & of course the red light district too.
It really is the perfect location from Central Station, approx 5 mins away & very easy to find.
Check in was very quick & we were all in our rooms within 10 mins of arrival ( there were 14 of us, so very efficient indeed.
We paid a little extra & got a cracking view of canal at the rear, looking across to Central Station & a slightly bigger room too. The room was basic, (but hey it's a 2 star & €360 for 3 nights based on me & my mate sharing, worked out at €180 Euros each, which is very cheap by Amsterdam rates!) Best thing for me in our room was our shower, excellent & as hot & cold as you'd want it. Also included for our €180 was & breakfast, this consisted of scrambled eggs & bacon, with tea/coffee & toast. For a further €5 a full English is available, in my eyes though the eggs & bacon is adequate, as a couple of hot dogs, some mushrooms & a handful of beans don't justify the €5. That minor gripe apart I couldn't fault the Old Quarter at all.
I must give a special mention to the staff @ reception, on the bar & also in the kitchen. I've read some negative comments on trip advisor, but we found them to be incredibly friendly & helpful.
One last thing, they'd live local jazz & funk bands on all through our stay & would recommend a couple of Heineken's taking in the vibe!

We had a wonderful couple days at the Hotel Old Quarter. Reading the other
reviews, I think it depends entirely on whether you get the canal view rooms
or the street side rooms. We got one floor up from the canal with as good
a view of the street, canal and handsome railway station, far to the left. Though
we were two blocks from the busiest heart of Amsterdam, it was a very quiet,
even idyllic location. Room size was good, too. We'll definitely stay there
every time we can reserve one of those canal view rooms. And it's our
top recommendation to all of our friends.

If you want luxury, or even to spend a lot of time in your room(!) the Hotel Old Quarter isn't for you. But if you want an inexpensive room to sleep in in the city centre, a few minutes from the Central Station, then the Hotel Old Quarter is relatively good value for expensive Amsterdam.

Last time I was in Amsterdam I paid nearly two and a half times more for a room than what I paid for a single room in the Hotel Old Quarter. The main difference between them was that my room in HOQ didn't have a bathroom. (It just had a sink). The bathroom was just outside the room and shared (I believe) with just two other rooms.

My only complaints: I didn't find the floor to be very clean; and, I needed to keep the window open a lot due to poor air. (Fortunately, given that it was winter, the radiator remained hot from the time I turned it on through the duration of my half week stay).

Everything else was positive: price; reliably warm room; location; breakfast - bacon and egg with either tea or coffee; quietness - though it helped that my room was not facing the street; a good bar and restaurant on the ground floor; 24 hour reception and access; and very friendly, approachable staff, all of whom speak fluent English.

I stayed with a friend in the hotel which was very nice. The spot cannot be better if you want to be reaaaaaally near the train station (Amsterdam Centraal). Around you find coffee shops, restaurants’, stores etc.

We booked through booking.nl a double room WITH toilet and shower INSIDE the room. But they gave is one without it. But the view from the room was so amazing that we almost stayed there. But we paid extra 10 Euros for that and it’s always handy to have them inside your room after a long night .

The receptionist took care of our demand and immediately gave is another room . Very clean. Thumbs up.

Super location (and very calm sleep at night), very nice and helpful staff, great restaurant and food. We took a long time to choose the hotel and we we rather willing to go for 3 stars as a minimum, but this one had an especially good rating and was also our preference because the price did include both the city tax and the breakfast (which is often not the case for many other similar hotels). Car parking service and especially their own restaurant where you can come down any time until 23.00 to eat was extremely convenient!! food excellent, large meals and prices really ok!
we booked 2 rooms, one luxury double and the other quadruple, beds in the first room were much better.
The only thing we have missed in the rooms were tea-coffee making facilities (but maybe it is normal with two stars?) and the light in the rooms could be stronger (very poor now in the evening). otherwise, shower, tv, wireless internet (in 'luxury' room) no problem.
booking online with easytobook.com was very easy and convenient, and suprisingly cheaper than booking directly on the hotel's website!
overall: a really very good price and quality combination.
