My sister and I try to meet once a year in a European city; since we live far apart, our outings are always special occasions and as a rule we stay at unusual, high-quality accommodation with that bit of extra personal attention - this time we had chosen Amsterdam and - in view of all the excellent reviews on Tripadvisor - decided to stay at Suite 259.
We were not disappointed.
The room we were given was beautifully appointed and tastefully furnished and painted to the highest of standards with lots of attention to detail and gorgeous murals on the walls (painted by Aziz). It was also impeccably clean. I was welcomed through the wedding dress shop entrance (not to be missed, the robes on display are exceptional and very well made and indeed reasonably priced considering their Haute Couture quality, oh to be young again!), the fridge was full of complimentary soft drinks, there were chocolates and nibblers and plenty of biscuits on the coffee table, daily refills of soft drinks and sweets were an unexpected bonus - as was the complimentary bottle of South African red wine.
Breakfast was outstanding on all occasions - freshly squeezed orange juice followed by a selection of fresh fruit (strawberries, grapes and melon as well as mango), exciting stir fries and Dutch pancakes which reminded us of crèpe.
Not only were the hosts pleasant and really, really friendly, they went out of their way to make us feel comfortable and very much at home. On our departure, my sister was given a lunch box and we both received some little cuddly toys, little green giraffes, very cute.
Amsterdam is a very walkable city - make sure to follow the hosts' advice as regards restaurants - stay away from the Italian (Fiorentino) restaurant on Overtoom and definitely go to Proef, a Dutch bar with very good food /"pub grub" (scallops and filet of beef), nice house wine and a selection of Dutch beers. The tram stop is close to the B&B.
The only downside of Suite 259 is a busy road (room very quiet when the window is closed) and a faint smell of cigarette smoke which did not bother us too much in view of all the other details.
Do not miss the Concertgebouw - to my mind the best concert hall in the world with its fantastic conductor in residence - also: the quality of Amsterdam opera (singers and orchestra alike) is outstanding - we experienced a memorable production of Mozart's "Entführung" under the promising and dynamic conductor Constantinos Carydis.
The additional beauty of Suite 259 is its vicinity to all the major museums and the Concertgebouw making it THE Amsterdam destination for lovers of classical music and museums. Thank you very much indeed Peter and Aziz for making us feel so much at home.
