“Depends what you're after.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 11, 2012

If you're looking for somewhere in a great location, right in the centre of Amsterdam, then this place is great. But it is a little dingy, no frills at all, saggy beds, noisy (doesn't bother me but if you are a light sleeper, you might not get much), and just generally felt a little dirty and unkempt. The guys on the desk are friendly though and helpful, and the Irish pub downstairs is a nice place to chill out and have a drink or meal.

I've stayed in four different hostels in Amsterdam - this was probably the worst.

As the title says, it was great just to back in sleep in after a big day/night out in the city but you woke up with a sense of dread worse than your hangover when you realise just how disgusting and unclean the place is. Me and my friends stayed in a 6 bed dorm with a shared bathroom - the shared toilet didn't lock, had no light and I'm fairly sure broke after our first night and was never fixed. The showers were two floors down which, on Amsterdam staircases, is pretty tricky to manoeuvre. To be fair, this was only the case because the ones on our floor were undergoing renovation.

Despite the uncleanliness and broken facilities, we had a great time. Purely because we spent as little time in the hostel as possible. Pick somewhere else similarly priced - there's plenty on the same street as this that offer social areas that this did not. Or pick somewhere just off the other side of the Damrak - it'll be of higher quality and probably only another 2 or 3 minute walk from the attractions of De Wallen.

I stayed in the hostel when i traveled to Amsterdam in April of this year with my friend. We were mainly using the hostel as just a place to sleep and spent most of our time seeing Amsterdam and this is the best way to describe the hostel. Not good enough to go there if you are planning on spending a lot of time in the hostel but it is amazing for just somewhere to rest your head. Great location next to all major modes of transport in Amsterdam and the Irish pub below it does some of the best food i have ever had (especially the nacho's) I would definitely go back again to this hostel !

All the staff in the hostel were very friendly and the hostel was kept very clean. Nice modern toilet block and showers clean and newly refurbished. The beds in the room were nice and new. Fresh towels on request, a locker per person in each room, great location in the red light district and also offer money off food and drink in the popular irish bar downstairs.
My only issues which are pointless really were steep stairs (which is typical of a traditional dutch building), rooms felt a little bit cramped with 12 people in the room, and at nights there is a lot of noise off the street till late, but with the hostel where it is a lot of the residents there will be out anyway and the hotel offer earplugs in the vending machines.

Read alot of the negative reviews on here after booking the hostel. So i was pleasantly suprised to find out the hostel was nothing like some of the reviews. 10 of us stayed for 4 nights for a stag week, the hostel was clean and exactly what we needed (a decent place to sleep). Its location is very good for food, drink and of course coffee shops.

Only a couple of issues for us, the stairs leading to the second floor are VERY steep and would pose problems for some people. The room we stayed in was quite hot during in the night even with all the windows open, air conditioning would be an idea for an improvement for the hostel.

Good points, were the location, it was easy to come and go when we pleased, the bathroom was clean as was the room. The discount deal the hostel has with the pub below is also excellent as we found the pub to provide some awesome pub food with very generous portions just what we needed for the nights drinking.

Anyway i hope this review will balance out some of negative comments.

I would rebook here again! Don't believe all the reviews you read!

Over all it's basis but location is amazing. Once left out cases in the room to long after we should have checked out. Both cases was deliberately damaged. Had trouble the last time with the black guy on reception who over charged us. We had booked on line so should have got it cheaper. I paid for an up grade to private room for 2 nights Thursday and sat but when I game back in on the sat was told we only had paid for the upgrade for 1 night. The slainte bar which is kind of part of the hostel is really good. Great food and service at a good price, had many a good night in there and you get 20% discount. Had some good times at this hostel and met some good people. Location could not be better.

I stayed in this hostel as a group of friends for one night on our way to a sports tournament. We were attracted by the fair price and great location; the hostel is very close to Centraal Station in a neighborhood with plenty of diversions and fun activities. The three staff members I interacted with were all very helpful and pleasant, with one giving great food recommendations and another helping us get extra linens.

After the tournament was over, we had no set reservations but decided to try and return to the White Tulip for our final night. The staff was very accommodating; we had to 14 members in our party, but they could only free up one dormitory of 12 beds, but we were given mattresses that were comparable to the unremarkable bunk beds anyway.

Both evenings our rooms and the bathroom facilities were certainly not sparkling clean, but it certainly fit within reasonable standards and expectations. One easy fix they should really institute is to put hooks in or by the showers, as the lack of anywhere to put one's towel or clothes was disappointing.

That first night I spent a bit of time in the very small lobby people-watching as the late night crowd headed back and watched the night doorman show an extraordinary amount of patience and kindness towards an extremely intoxicated guest who came in and needed water and a serious pep talk before being able to make it up the super steep stairs.

If you're looking for a quiet place with opportunity to feel tranquility, then this hostel completely wrong for you. However, if you're on the younger, adventurous side and looking to have fun then it's certainly a very decent option for housing in Amsterdam.
