“Gross accomodations, friendly staff”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed December 12, 2007

This place is gross. The mattresses and linens were stained and the bathroom was dirty. We were three girls staying in a mixed dorm with 5 guys- which would have been fine, had one of them not been in his late 40s and slept in the nude. The lack of an age limit is a real problem. If you're a girl, try to get a girls only room-if they have them. Maybe it's the nature of the city, I never had an issue with mixed rooms anywhere else. The staff was really nice though and it's in a good location. It is located on top of a bar- no elevator so be prepared to drag your bags up steep steps. The bar has an outside area along one of the canals, which is nice.

First of all this is cheap, friendly and a great location. When we arrived it was easy to locate and checking in was fine. The globe is more of a hostel than hotel so dont be expecting much the bar below is open til 5AM which is great for a stag do. the bedrooms arnt up to much but you get what you pay for and when you are up til 5AM you dont care where you sleep. The location is brilliant it is in the heart of the red light district on the canal with all the local bars close by. i defo recommend for a birthday party or stag do!

Ok, so I knew up front this might be an experience...and it didn't disappoint...Location is really central to alot, but its kinda like staying in Time Square in NYC...there's always hustle and noise around and inside LOL

This is strictly a place to FLOP for MEN. Its not for anyone on a real vacation or FEMALES alone. It's like a International Frat house....

I must say the staff was great and very helpful, but it was our most expensive hotel of our Europe trip and no where near a value for the cost. The room was extremely bare and basic. There was a HUGE hole in the bathroom door and pretty gross walls. We survived for 3 nights, but it wasn't easy. The hallways are filthy and the noise from other rooms is bad as the walls are super thin.

Its been said here before, if you're a guy on a quick partying trip to Amsterdam, then this is a GREAT place for you....but vacationers need to look elsewhere...

We booked a stay here for 3 nights and after the first night we were forced to ask the management to refund our payment for the next two nights and find an alternative hotel. The rooms were basic and reasonable clean, but there was no central heating which meant that no one got any sleep at all because it was so cold. In addition to this we have a gang of blokes try to break into our room in the middle of the night! We managed to find a really lovely hotel in a good location for only €10 a night more. Basically if your a gang of lads on a stag weekend, you can probably have a great time here - otherwise avoid at all costs!

I've stayed at this hostel on three separate occasions. The rooms are basic with a WC and kept clean. If you're on a lads weekend this hostel is for you. It has a 24hr bar which also sells food and shows all the sky footie matches. Its right in the middle of the red light district and has numerous coffee shops and bars steps away.
I think the prices are starting to creep up a little due to its popularity but that isn't always a bad thing.

A group of four of us recently stayed at the Globe. We are English Ajax supporters who travel quite regularly over for the games. Unfortunately our regular hotel has steadily gone up in price over the last couple of years so it was time to seek out alternative accommodation. So we opted for the globe. Basically you pays your money and get what you get. We paid 20 euro's each per night for a quad room which was on the first floor at the back of the hotel with a small window with absolutely no view whatsoever. The room was very basic but we did have an ensuite shower and toilet which was very handy. The shower had very good water pressure and the water was very hot, unlike some other budget hotels, there was no shower gel or soap supplied. The room was reasonably clean but at the time of writing this there is a lot of pavement work going on right outside the front of the hotel with tons of sand everywhere so the place looks like a beach!
Sand had been trampled in all over the hotel including our room.
The mattresses on our beds were way past their best and are long overdue to be changed. The bed linen was clean though. The bedroom furniture had seen better days as well but still served it's purpose for us. One thing the room didn't have which I like to have is an in-room safe, so take all your valuables with you. The lock on our door didn't look all that clever so dont leave anything of any value in the room. On a plus note, they serve a wicked breakfast in the bar at a reasonable price and the bar itself is open 24 hours. The hotel is situated right in the red light district and is a stones throw from centraal station, about a three to four minute walk. At the end of the day if you just want somewhere cheap and cheerful just to get your head down (after a long day and hard night) as we did, then you cant go far wrong for the money. However. if you are bringing your wife or girlfriend to Amsterdam for a few days break I would suggest something at little more upmarket. I can recommend the Amstel Botel (3 stars) floating hotel where I have stayed with my wife which offered good value for money. It is also just a stones throw from the station and in fact is not far from the globe. So would we stay at the Globe again? Yes.

  • Liked — The price
  • Disliked — The rooms are getting old and tired and could do with a face lift.
  • Tips/Secrets — Amsterdam is a fun place, but stay in a group in the red light at night.

We stayed in a 6-person private room (4 guys 2 girls), which had ensuite shower but shared toilet. Our experience wasn't as bad as some of the reviews, but maybe its because we had a room to ourselves. Most of the clientele appeared to be 20-30 year old guys who probably never ventured out of the red light district. I would not consider for one second staying in a shared dorm here--seems like it could be too rowdy or shady.

The room was unexpectedly clean with spotless sheets, and no weird smells. The stairwells/hallways, however, sometimes smelled like marijuana and fried chicken, of which remnants could be found on the floor at at 3am.

Pub on ground floor was never an issue with noise. Same with the street--it was at the edge of a canal, a stones throw from the red lights. It was only populated with drinkers during football matches. Staff was anal about security, but thats a necessary inconvenience for staying near the red light district. Only one key per room and we had to leave it with the receptionist when the room was empty. Also, you had to be buzzed in by the staff to get up to the rooms.
