“Mind the stairs!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 days ago NEW

This is a great little hotel in a very central location. Staff were all exceptionally helpful from the booking through to the departure, well worth a visit. BUT beware of the stairs! There is no lift and there are not too many floors but the stairs like many in Amsterdam are very narrow and windy. We did not get to the café recommended by the hotel but found a very good one which is reviewed later.

Room Tip: Try to secure a room at the front of the hotel as the rear rooms backs onto a restaurant and the sta...

We have just returned after saying at this hotel. As a large group, we found it really comfortable, the rooms were spacious and nicely decorated. The staff are really friendly, it is your typical Amsterdam hotel with steep stairs, but this just added to the age and the type of building you would expect, beautiful!!!!

Room Tip: If you are unsure about anything email hotel direct, they were so helpful

Our first visit to Amsterdam and we couldn't have chosen a better hotel. No, it doesn't have a restaurant or provide breakfast, but it is a historic canal side property. The staff will direct you to Brug34 for breakfast, a lovely modern and bright little cafe just a few steps away where the young staff will prepare your food from fresh ingredients. We had taken note of advice on this site and booked a room with a canal view. I strongly recommend you do the same. The only (minor) downside for us as an older couple was that the room was up three flights of very steep stairs, almost like ships ladders. No lift. However, this is common with the majority of small, historic hotels in Amsterdam, and we believe in private properties also. The staff at the hotel carried our bags up to the room when we arrived and down at the end of our stay. The location of the hotel is perfect. Within a few minutes you can be at the Metro station (Waterlooplein) or in Rembrantplein where you can take one of the many trams to visit other parts of the city. There are many restaurants and bars in the area catering for a wide range of tastes. The service we had from staff at the front desk was always excellent. Like everyone we met in Amsterdam they all speak excellent English.

Room Tip: Spend a little more for a canal view, it's worth it.

The staff and facility at Amstelzicht are top notch. If you desire a place that feels as 'Dutch' as you can in Amsterdam, Amstelzicht is the place. Intimate, great view of canals (in the canal view rooms), nice sized room. We did stay in one of the canal view rooms. A traveling companion joined us and was challenged with the stairs up to the top. They are steep, and can be treacherous. The neighborhood is a 'living' neighborhood, with local pubs nearby. Not nearly as loud and obnoxious as Rembrandt Square-adjacent places, where the noise and debris from the revelry can be distracting. Amsterdam is not a quiet, serene location, but the Amstelzicht provides a place to sleep that is off the main road, but only a block or two from the sights. No breakfast, and a stingy in-room coffee set up are negatives. I would go back, and I do recommend the site.

This is a lovely little hotel in a fantastic location. All the staff are pleasant and helpful. Around the corner are numerous restaurants, pubs and bars. I would have rated lower if we hadn't gotten our room at a extremely budgeted rate but at today's prices would have been disappointed. Our room was very small, and if one was traveling with substantial luggage, there is just no where to stow it. The bathroom is tiny, one can brush teeth whilst on loo, it is so small. Shower however is a good size and excellent pressure. Bed was so comfortable, fridge and tea and coffee making facilities. It rained heavily whilst we were there and outside our window was a tin roof, music to ears whilst raining but when it stopped the drips from the shutter cover was noisy, it was like some one throw ice cubes randomly on the roof. Nothing shut out the noise, hence sleep was disrupted. The stairs are also a major concern they are so steep so beware if you are mobility impaired this is not the hotel for u, especially with the small bathroom thrown in. There are bigger rooms I think, but there is still those stairs. Note we received no welcome pack. Would I go back, yes for location but at a good price only considering there is no breakfast, but not in the height of summer as our room had no air conditioning and it would be unpleasantly hot

We liked so much to stay at this hotel. The front desk people are very pleasant and attentive. One of the best location at Amsterdam, near to everything. The rooms are clean, noiseless, and big enough. Simple and confortable. They don´t offer breakfast.

Dear Frederico B, Thank you very much for taking your time to share your review on Tripadvisor according your recent stay at Hotel Amstelzicht. It's a pleasure for us to read your satisfaction. The location of the hotel is indeed central, within walking distance of many attractions and sights in Amsterdam. We do not serve the Breakfast in the hotel, but we do recommend on nice restaurant on the corner called 'Brug34' and our Guests can enjoy the breakfast for 9,50 Euro pp. We hope to welcome you again in the near future. Best regards, Hotel Amstelzicht.

This is generally a lovely hotel, however the balance between positive and negative points would unfortunately sway me to NOT stay here again. The main issues are that it's a hotel that seems to concetrate on "looks" over more practical and comfortable needs. I have listed the positives and negatives so you can weigh up whether you wish to try the experience for yourself... POSITIVE 1: central location just behind Rembrandtplein - Amsterdam is tiny anyway but if you do want to try a bit of everything (museums, coffeeshops, restaurants, flower market, tour outside to the windmills and tulip fields, jewish quarter etc) then staying near Rembrandtplein is an excellent choice. POSITIVE 2: staff are very friendly and helpful. POSITIVE 3: You get your own front key so you feel pretty independent and still safe. POSITIVE 4: Initial appearance is impressive, modern and trendy with a mix of historical features, like the goregously refurbished traditional Dutch vertical stairs. POSITIVE 5: There are not many rooms so you don't get a sense of being crowded nor production line-style treatment. POSITIVE 6: the room we stayed in was a twin - it was a decent size. Now for my negatives... NEGATIVE 1: the stairs - they are as I mentioned very beautiful but I found them pretty daunting as I am quite clumsy. If you have any kind of mobility impediments or even a slight vertigo then you should definitely re-consider as all rooms are at least up one flight of these stairs. No lift. NEGATIVE 2: the mattresses themselves were comfortable but they kept on slipping off the base. I am a restless sleeper so I did end up with my butt on the floor many times. Not a major negative but one all the same. NEGATIVE 3: I booked through booking.com and the room was advertised incorrectly so instead of having a double room with canal view we ended up with a twin with service alleyway view instead. The price was correct - as we checked - but part of me does feel a little duped as this was a factor in deciding for this hotel. NEGATIVE 4: This is a major one - the bathroom is a HUGE thumbs down. It wasn't completely spotless - the shower needed to be cleaned much better and the sundries provided were all very poor. The towels were clean but only medium size and quite rough. The soap in the shower and near the hand basin was awful. It was was supplied in a refill container attached to the wall - cheap gym style - and the soap they decided to fill it with was the same - a very chemical substance, electric blue in colour, which made my skin very itchy and dry. This is what you were supposed to use for your hands, body and hair. I couldn't this blue substance on any part of my body more than once - I had a similar experience when I was camping and opted to use a cheap dish washing liquid to save money. The hotel's blue substance was way worse. The toilet paper was also very very poor - thin, rough and really useless. I am not one to be too fussy about these things usually, so if I say it's bad - it's bad. Most of these negatives can be rectified so I hope they do.

Dear Mr/Mrs,

Thank you for writing a extensive review about your experience and opinion of your recent stay in Hotel Amstelzicht.

We are totally agree with the positive points you are writing in your review, Hotel Amstelzicht is indeed a lovely hotel!! I'm surprised at your ‘balance between positive and negative points as you describe’. And that you've come to a conclusion not to stay with us again. I like to go through the two points that surprised us the most, the other points are personal tastes and will be experienced different by every guest.

NEGATIVE 1: the Stairs.
Every time guest make comments about the stairway I’m surprised, and my question is always…. Why guest make a reservation in a hotel without a lift, if this may cost you issues On every single website and review site this is clearly written, and still guest are surprised while staying at the hotel, and more surprisingly will make a negative review on the internet witch of course is frustrated and bad for the Hotel. Besides that we think guest who need a lift should not book Amstelzicht, we do have rooms available on the ground floor, on request, as well we do help with luggage if needed, and seriously, the stairs are very normal for Amsterdam and not dangerous at all. But do you know the building has been built in 1659 and the historical stairway has been placed in the building by a rich Banker in the early Dutch Golden Age, now a very valuable historical detail and loved by many visitors. ( and not allowed to change it due to the monumental value)

NEGATIVE 4: This is a major one - the bathroom is a HUGE thumbs down.
Regarding the cleanest, and that apparently there was only one small towel, we wish you had contacted us during your stay, as our standard is of course to have a spotless clean bathroom, and per guest always 1 small and 1 big towel. However regarding the Bathroom soap, we are using products from, “Dove” and this should Bring your shower to life with the new Revitalize Body Wash and should leave your skin refreshed and smooth, I’m surprised to read this was not the case by you. In the Hotel Suites e offer extra amenities with extra deluxe products, which of course if we would have known you didn’t like the soaps in your room we could have provided them to you , as a service specially for you.

All in all, we wish you had inform us during your stay, and had read a little bit better before you made the reservation with us, and you would have a fabulous time in Amstelzicht, I’m sure!

Regards,
