“Friendly, clean”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 7, 2013

I surprised my boyfriend witha 3 day trip to amsterdam for his christmas present. I wanted something cheap and cheerful, and hotel Van onna provided tht. The hotel was located just far enough away from the main hustle and bustle, but within walking difference of many attractions. The hotel provided a good clean room, with a bathroom clean and big enough for two. The only problem was no shower curtain, more of a wet room, though not a big deal as they provide a sponge broom to dry it. Maid service every day, as well as a lovely breakfast, that if you can manage to eat it all (proved challenging, but food tended to be expenisve around amsterdam) fills you up for the rest of the day. Staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The only annoying thing, though not that much of an issue were the church bells. They sure like them, every 15 minutes. Also, with the 10% extra charge for card and tourist tax or whatever, it makes it kinda expesnive. But, still, stay here. It's charming and friendly and nicely located. Stay here if you're looking for a nice friendly cute bed and breakfasty place :)

there was everything that I needed apart from the WI-FI which could really only be accessed in the reception.
As my stay was fairly lengthy, it was slightly annoying, not to mention having no television in the rooms.

Other than, everything was great.

The Van Onna is a canalside hotel in the Jordaan in a location which is quiet and residential but only five minutes from the Westerkerk, several tram stops, and Ann Frank's house. I find hotels in Amsterdam ridiculously expensive but this one isn't, and I believe it's rare to find a hotel in the Jordaan area at all let alone a reasonably-priced one.

We stayed for three nights over New Year in room 40 which is small, comfortable, and on the first floor overlooking the canal. The hotel is basic but met all our needs for a short stay. The bed and the room temperature were very comfortable and there was lashings of hot water in the shower.

Breakfast is served in a pretty dining room and the following is brought to your table: hot drinks (no decaf coffee - boo), bread, butter, jam, chocolate sprinkles, hard-boiled egg, small plate of ham and cheese.

Staff were friendly and helpful, and we thought the sound of the church bells as it drifted down the canal was really beautiful.

very good hotel but very expensive for the period of the new year, pleasant personnel.Hotel located at 10 minutes with foot of the centre town. The room was not very large but pleasant, it was located on the last floor, one could benefit from a good sight for fire of artifice

The Hotel Van Onna's main strength is its location... nestled away on one of the quietest and prettiest canals in the Jordaan area, yet only a stone's throw from some of Amsterdam's playgrounds and cultural highlights. Anne Frank's House, for example, is at the end of the street! The Damrak is a mere 10-15 minute walk away, depending on how busy it is and how quick a walker you are.

The staff at Van Onna, as repeated many times throughout this page, are superb. A family run B&B and nothing is ever too much trouble.

We stayed on the third floor at the front of the hotel with some wonderful views of the canal. The only problem here was that the local cathedral liked to play "Jerusalem" and other random tunes at seemingly random times, even well into the early hours!! Being at the front of the hotel and having single-glazing, it is easily heard!

All in all, a perfect B&B to use as a base to explore this wonderful city at reasonable prices. No surprises, either nasty or good... but its location simply cannot be understated.

Strongly recommended in the local area is the bar "Cafe Chris" (one of the oldest bars in Amsterdam!) and the night-bar Cafe de Koophandel nearly directly opposite Van Onna which doesn't open until 10pm. Both of these places are proper local haunts and turned out to be our best night ever. Tourists who make the effort to get off of the beaten track and seek out the real Amsterdam are well rewarded!

positive points: it is close to touristic points, about 20 min by foot from train central station, it has a near stop of tram(about 5 min by foot), there are supermarkets near(close to Dam square), friendly staff, quiet neighborhood at the Jordaan district, reasonable price for Amsterdam.
Negative points: charges 5% on payment with credit, debit or pre-paid cards, wifi available only in the main building not in single room in annex building. There isn't TV in room. Breakfast without fruits and cereals, also little amount of milk, and with a curious offer of a small bowl with chocolate sprinkles and others with an excess amount of butter and sugar, in addition to not be self-service, but nonetheless it isn't a so bad breakfast, there is a sufficient amount of bread, ham, cheese, jam, egg. There isn't 24h reception.
In general is a good hotel to stay in Amsterdam, with good cost-benefit relation, the breakfast and wifi could be better.
