“Interesting and welcoming hotel in an ideal position overlooking Amstel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 28, 2010

We have never had such a friendly welcome as when we arrived at this hotel - and it wasn't a "one-off" as the two men and one lady made us feel at home during the three days that we stayed. In line with other reviews, the hotel needs some redecoration and upgrading, but there were so many positives that we will certainly return.

They don't serve evening meals, but there are so many restaurants nearby that this wasn't a problem; and it was nice returning to the hotel for a glass or two of wine before going to bed, with gentle jazz or Classic FM playing quiently in the background.

Breakfast was excellent, and again Classic FM was playing in the background. Interestingly a heron arrived each morning for its breakfast of cheese!

The hotel is ideally situated, overlooking the Amstel and on a quiet road with hardly any traffic; and near to boat trips and the flower market.

Good location, great view across Amstel. Easy access to tram and metro. Hotel could do with some refurbishment but it is a fun place to stay. Loads of bars and restaurants nearby plus flower market and large flea/general market nearby.

When my two children (21 and 17) and I decided to go to Amsterdam we began by looking at apartments to rent for a week. Then it occured to us that we might be able to rent one of those lovley houseboats, lining the canals, that you see in the pictures,After a bit of research we settled on Amsterdam House which offered houseboats and pictures. They also had one for the whole week. So even though it was pricey (350.00 $), we booked. The pictures looked lovely and the kids were excited. Unfortunately, after flying for 7 hours, arriving at 7:00 am, finding our way to the hotel where you pick up the keys to the houseboat, the houseboat not being "cleaned" yet...when we finally got there it was ...well let me put it this way... NOT WORTH $350.00 a night. The curtians were stained, the windows had tons of dead bugs all over them, the wallpaper was icky, It didn't look like the pictures at all. They had to be called for clean towels. I asked them to clean the boat one day and all they did was bring clean towels, no cleaning. There are so many beautiful houseboats on the canals, with just a little imagination, and a few pots of flowers on the outside deck of the boat, this place could be a winner, not a looser.

We had problems already when making the reservation here. First there was what we wanted, a large flat for 4 people. Then there was not. Then the reservation was changed to one of their houseboats. Great for the kids we thought. When we arrived they offered 3 night on a houseboat for the same price. Great we thought. But not at all! The houseboat was located far from the hotel. Not as indicated on their webpages. The houseboat was surrounded by floating garbage, and was itself not pleasant. It was smelling and as the night came, so did the rain from the roof into the master bed. We companied to their emergency number, to the reception and to the owner. Agreed to move to another hotel, we found ourselves, but now they have charged us for the full stay anyhow! Terrible experience. We are trying to get our money back now.

This is a very nice hotel with excellent view of a canal for most of the rooms. The staff is very helpful and friendly. The breakfast is quite good also.

On the down side (but less important than the up side) the hotel could do with some upkeep. Also, the rooms are small. Perhaps there could be some rooms with just one single bed for solo travellers since the size of a small room becomes even smaller when a huge bed (unnecessary for business travellers) is taking up 70% of the floor space.

We stayed for 2 nights, we paid 315 euros, our own fault we booked on last minute so couldn't find cheaper price, it was also public holiday in holland. We got the canal view room, tiny room, & tired looking.

The service was great, very friendly and helpful staff, first night breakfast was free and so delicious wide selection of food. Location is good, near the flowemarket and in the quiet street.

If the rooms were better, I'd love to stay in this hotel again due to the great services and location, but to me rooms are very important and for the price you pay it's not good enough.

A vast window out from the comfortable big bed, looking over the Amstel.

Good breakfast (though it only came with one nights accomodation, which suprised me).

The staff are helpful. Even the cleaner remembered to leave extra tea when I asked!

Happy to return.
