“Make sure you have a canal facing room.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 13, 2009

We stayed here for a total of about 10 days. First of all just know that this is a budget hotel. The good things are: It's cheap, it's in a GREAT location, the staff are wonderful, and for just 10 euros each you can have an all you can eat breakfast, including eggs. The negatives: It's old, somewhat dirty and you DO NOT want to stay in a rear facing room. Our first room (rear facing) was very uncomfortable in that there were no less than 8 hotel and apartment windows that looked directly down into our room. Whenever we were getting ready to turn in for the night, there were 5 or 6 pot smoking college aged kids sitting in their window watching my girlfriend get into her night clothes. It was so hot (the hotel has no air conditioning) that we had to leave the window open. Our second room was a canal view room. Two big windows that opened up to a beautiful view of Amsterdam.

I would recommend it ONLY if you have a forward, canal view room.

Here you get exactly what you pay for. Location, location, location, plus and an excellent helpful staff with a great breakfast (and free WiFi and printing). Rooms are adequate - don't expect the Hilton (the carpet is a bit dodgy). Being on gthe cheap side, don't be surprised that the people in the room next to you are more interested in coffee houses than van Gogh (and the smoke from the room proves it...). Check out the great vintage guitar shop next door.

After reading some reviews, we were a little concerned, but we found we needn't have been. We decided to book despite the reviews as we were only using it to rest our heads at night. We booked for two nights.
Pretty much everything was good. Very friendly & helpfull staff. We were offered 1 complementary breakfast, but decided to go for breakfast elsewhere recommended by friends on the second morning. Breakfast pricing of 10Euro is definately worth it - especially considering the prices at places that served breakfasts nearby. Good canal views with a good sized double bed. Also allow pets (but confirm at time of booking). We would definately stay here again! Excellent value for money if on a budget.
The only downsides was the decor in the rooms is a bit dated now and it could do with a fresh lick of paint, but other than that, it was excellent. It didn't put us off our stay in the slightest though. Also it was a bit hot the first night and we opted to leave the windows open for cool air. Being a Saturday, the noise from crowds accross the canal seemed to never stop, but again, it didn't worry us as we just took it as part of the experience of Amsterdam :) The second night we closed the window and most of the noise was drowned out. We slept very well.
The location was great. Close to coffee shops, flea markets, public transport and museums etc...
There is no parking at the hotel and parking is expensive in the city, so we parked at the Olympic Stadium and used the Park & Ride facility for 6Euro a day which includes free tram transfer to the centre. Well worth it.
Will definately stay there again when we revisit the city.

Overall, I would never recommend this hotel. I am astonished by the positive reviews that it receives. On the positive side, it is located in a nice enough area. The staff was generally pleasant and helpful when asking for directions and recommendations. There's free breakfast on your first morning and the lobby/sitting area was charming in it's own way. Now to the negative... the rooms were absolutely awful. I can't stress this enough. They are tiny, dark and depressing. My room was so small that the door would not fully open because it was blocked by the bed! All of the furnishings are ancient. The bed was uncomfortable, as the mattress seemed to be wrapped in plastic and rustle every time i moved. And the sheets actually had stains and cigarette burns in them. The carpet was musty and worn with some dark brown stains --- I don't even want to imagine what that was from. And the bathroom was moldy. On top of all of this, the floor was actually slanted. My husband said it literally made him feel off and dizzy. The hallway also smelled of cigarette smoke. This was a very unpleasant, uncomfortable stay. I attempted to switch rooms/floors in hope that I just happened to get a bad room, but the other room they offered was just as dreary and disgusting. After a few days, I couldn't take it anymore and left to check into another hotel.

A friend recommended this hotel to us and we were glad she did. Having read some of the Trip Advisor reviews our expectaions were not overly high. We were pleasantly surprised. It suited our budget and the location was fantastic. It was also nice and quiet. We could walk everywhere, including too and from the train station with our luggage. The buffet breakfast selection was also good. Yes, the hotel is a little quirky and the rooms are not perfect. I certainly recommend getting a canal view room. We were not there to spend masses of time in our room, we were there to see Amsterdam, which is a great walking city, even in the rain!
The elevator might have been slow, but at least there was one which is a real bonus. The free internet was also handy. I would recommend this hotel to anyone who likes to stay in local smaller establishments and can live without the amenities that come with a luxury hotel. We would definitely stay there again if we were ever to return to Amsterdam.

Stayed here for 3 nights in October. This is a bit of an odd one!

The location is picturesque and only 10 minutes walk to the city centre..but the hotel itself could do with a bit of renovating.

The lift is bizarre-its ancient! The corridors are very narrow and the carpet has seen better days. Our room was quite small but had a lovely big window overlooking the canals.
The decor of the room is'nt your average hotel decor..everything is absaloutly ancient. I know the look they're going for but it did'nt really work for me.
There were cracks and stains on the walls.
The bathroom was'nt good. We were met by a horrible smell and had to spray the whole room and open the windows :[
The shower/bath combo wasnt clean(there seemed to be mould along the walls) and neither was the floor.
Also the entire room seemed to be slanting to one side!?

However the bed sheets were very clean and the room itself was cleaned every day.
The buffet-style breakfast was quite nice. Plenty of variety.

All in all it is very quirky and the the staff were friendly.
The price was good and the location is one of the best in amsterdam.
I think it really needs a good over-haul though.
It just was'nt for me.

  • Liked — The location and The family dog!
  • Disliked — Levels of cleanliness were very poor.

We ended our tour of Europe at this hotel. We found it very close to the tram stop and were very pleased with the central location. We were greated by Will who is extremely friendly as is the lady that runs the desk during the day. Our room was a canal view and while the view was nice we were on the top floor which made our room feel smaller with low beams you had to duck under to move from the window to the door. It was not what was pictured on thier website. The bathroom was kinda scary and the shower had a slow drain and the entire bathroom floor was a puddle of water when showering. It was not the cleanest room we had encountered, but the bed was comfortable and the sheets were clean.
The free breakfast the first morning was very nice. Lots of meat and cheese choices, some sweet breads/cakes, and great coffee. The free internet access was a nice plus.
I'm not sure if we'd stay here again due to the lack of cleanliness. I understand that it's an old building, but they need to do some upgrading to the carpet and tile.

  • Liked — The desk staff were very friendly and helpful
  • Disliked — The room was not clean and the bathroom was not good
