“Hotel Eureka”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 7, 2012

Hotel Eureka offers a great location for budget travelers. It seemed like a 15 minute walk from the central station and an even shorter walk to the Rikimuseum and the Van Gogh museum. Breakfast your first day there is free. Subsequent days are 12.50 euros per person. Breakfast consisted of espresso or tea with a variety of pastries, as well as a station to make your own eggs. Also included was cereal, yogurt, fruit, and toast. Overall our stay was very pleasant and the rate was reasonable. Our room was very small but clean. The walls are thin though, so it's best to have earplugs or be a heavy sleeper.

Great central location in the heart of the city with all the main sites within 15 minutes walk Lovely welcome, all the staff were friendly and very helpful, and a front room with a canal view made this an ideal city break base. Would ceratinly stay again.

Room Tip: The canal view is well worth paying the supplement.

I am really mixed about what to say in this review because there is good and bad.

The good - the best part is the very friendly and accommodating staff - they would try to help with anything. The breakfast was awesome - free the first day, and then 10 Euros per person, but worth every bit. The breakfast room was very comfortable with classical music and great service. This later became a comfortable lounge/sitting area to escape your small room. Just outside were chairs and tables where you could sit and enjoy wine/coffee/dinner when the weather was good. Fresh towels were provided every day.

The bad - the room was "Way Too Small" for two people, even by European standards. There was no chance of putting even one suitcase down - get what you need and stand it up in a corner. You had to move the chair in order to get in to the bathroom. Things had to be piled on top of other things. This room (on the third floor - not facing canal) should really be made into a single person/single bed room. The view was other hotel rooms in close proximity - at one point someone from another hotel climbed out their window to smoke - and could basically climb in our window if so inclined - be aware of safety.

Also, this room is in sad need of repair. The old shag red carpet was torn and curled up from the baseboards in many areas, and looked quite dusty and dirty. It really needs to be replaced. The bed is lumpy and saggy.

Perhaps if you get a larger canal-view room the stay would be more comfortable. It is a pity that the rooms are so run down, because otherwise, there is a lot of charm and potential in this hotel.

Room Tip: Try for a larger canal-view room - worth the extra money.

Knowing in advance the room would be quite small and not the smartest we loved our three nights on the third floor of this characterful hotel. In a tranquil riverside location yet so close to bars, transport etc we thought it fantastic value by any city's standards. The breakfast was also good value and while the lift is not enormous at least there was one. The staff were very helpful and we would definitely go back.

Friendly welcome on arrival at the Amsterdam House Hotel where we had to pick up the keys for the houseboat. It would have been helpful if the proprietor had briefed the taxi driver on how to find the houseboat as we spent ages trying to find it as the taxi costs were going through the roof! On arrival at the houseboat my heart sank. It was very shabby on the outside with overgrown weeds and peeling paint. Inside was also a disappointment. The houseboat stank of stale cigarette smoke and as none of us were smokers it was very unpleasant. Things that didn't work - no light in the bathroom - which was interesting on the first night! no ceiling lights worked at all apart from one in a small hall. Lack of curtains and very stained and dirty curtain in one bedroom which was not nice - see picture. The location was awful - right next to a very noisy road intersection and bridge - see picture. Something that, of course, is not mentioned on the website. The noise was extremely loud and went on way past midnight. I could hear it even with ear plugs in!

Charming hotel overlooking the Amstel River with a lovely breakfast room which can be used for relaxing in the afternoon, and perusing the many books available. Only down side is the street noise on the week end but then we are an older couple who goes to bed early! Staff was very helpful, especially, Will, who always was available when we need assistance and also played great music! We would highly recommend.

Stayed here for three nights. The location of the hotel is great, walking distance to everything! 5 minutes to flower market, 20 minutes to Museumsplein, 10 minutes to Kalverstraat.. Also many nice restaurants close to the hotel. But, the hotel is very "worn out". Our room was dusty, the beds was "bumpy", the walls, lamps and chairs were visibly old and not in a good standard. The same goes for the bathroom, where the painting was falling off.. The walls, door and windows are very thin, so it is very noisy, especially during nighttime - because of the central location. When there are people in the hall outside the room talking, it feels like they actually are inside your room. The canal-view is nice though.. The breakfast is also nice and basic. This hotel has a lot of potential! The owners should really upgrade it, at least throw away broken lamps, bumpy mattresses (which for some reason was covered in plastic..) and visibly broken furniture.. The staff is very friendly and helpfull! But, I'm sorry to say that I would not stay here again, until the rooms have been totally refurbished.

Room Tip: Try not to get a room in the end of the hallway - these are small and narrow. Second or third floor...
