“Somewhat overrated”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 8, 2011

My husband and I stayed for a few days of holiday. The location is very central but situated off the main thoroughfare just enough not to have too much street and canal noise. This is fortunate because the windows are single-glazed and don't shut very well. You will however hear the doors of other rooms slamming because the doors seem to stick. It's like busting into your own room, which may be slightly amusing.

The view of the canal from the upper floor we stayed in was rather picturesque. The room however could use some redecoration/maintenance and a really good cleaning, particularly the bathroom, which in our room was a narrow little wet room. (Who thought a tiled swamp was a good idea?) It was gross enough that we both bought pairs of novelty flip flops so we never had to put our bare feet on the carpet or the dingy tile floor. Now I know why the hotel's website has so few photos and sparse information. Thank goodness for review sites, eh?

The hotel staff gave us the first breakfast free but it's €10 each after that. After trying it we decided against what is a basic continental breakfast for the next day. They have eggs on offer but you have to cook them yourself which feels strange, especially when paired with the classical music being played as if it's a hoity-toity place. It was like a Dutch Fawlty Towers.

In spite of a few oddities and the uncleanliness it was not a bad stay. The staff are polite and the price is pretty reasonable. It's Amsterdam, it's supposed to be an adventure.

The supplies we brought from home for our trip are just about done. It's time to pack up, go home and hug family that has been greatly missed. But not before savoring Amsterdam...home of stroopwafles, aged Gouda cheese and the summer sale of Kalverstraat. And the best place to do it is from Amsterdam House Hotel. It is a small, quiet hotel by a lovely canal. Centrally located but without the usual hustle and din one expects from a central location. The owners are very helpful, friendly and gracious. There are a few tables set outside where guests can serenely watch the world and fellow tourists go by while sipping espressos.

Breakfast on the first morning is free. But because their breakfasts are substantial, one does not mind paying for them on subsequent days. Moreover, one can choose to take breakfast up to 12 noon. Kalverstraat is just a 5-7 minute walk, so is Waterlooplein, on the opposite direction, the tram stations are 'a hop and a skip' away. There are cobbled alleys to explore and out-of-the-way restaurants and pretty shops to pleasantly discover in the area.

Room Tip: When booking, ask for a room overlooking the canal.

Stayed in this hotel for 3 nights with a group of friends last weekend and couldn't have been more pleased with the hotel. It's location is great very easily accessible by tram fron central station and within walking distance of all the sights and nightlife. Clean room overlooking the canal but still nice and quiet at night, no street noise. If I return to amsterdam I will absolutely return to this hotel. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly and served delicious coffee's every morning.

We just stayed at the Eureka Hotel for 4 nights. This was our first visit to Amsterdam and we found this hotel perfectly located. We took the subway from Central Station, got off at Waterlooplein and walked 4 blocks to get to the hotel. The hotel is in a quiet zone and Amsterdam’s main sights are easy to reach within 20 minutes walk. Rembrandtplein is just 3 block away and is full of restaurants, bars, and clubs.

The hotel is old, but charming, I had read about the tiny rooms, so we just unpacked some clothes since Amsterdam was our last leg of our trip (visited Croatia before). The room was perfectly lit and very quiet, I indeed had a good sleep, the bed was very comfortable. The TV was small, but I just turned it on just 15 minutes to watch the news. The room has a coffee maker and coffee, teas and sugar. We were offered the free breakfast and liked it. They had cold cuts, cereal, fruits, great coffee, pastries, and you could make your own eggs or omelets if you want, so we had breakfast there everyday. The staff was so kind and helpful. WiFi worked perfect, and they have a computer you can use for free, it was great because I could print my boarding pass there.

If you travel with lots of luggage and lots of amenities for personal care you might feel a little bit cramped, but if you want a hotel to rest, clean yourself and have a nice breakfast before going out and admire Amsterdam then this is your hotel.

We rented a houseboat from them.
Very dirty. No heat. No TV.
No towels, No light in bathroom.
Told it was non smoking, you could not get rid of the smoke odor with the windows open.
No instructons or info provided for area or how the boat works.
We wrote list and gave to front desk. Basically no response. We were given one light bulb and 3 towels.
TV never did work. Heater was turned on after 2 nd day.
Was told at check out, owner is elderly and does want to spend any money on fixing anythin up.
NEVER< NEVER stay here.

We are very sorry to hear about these guests experiences,
However we feel we have to correct this matter because it has nothing to do with the Amsterdam House Hotel

The houseboats are rented out by a different company and do not represent the hotel.
Therefor please disregard the above review.

Thank you,
The management of Amsterdam House Hotel

Lovely place. We took the tram to get there the first day and then walked everywhere. No matter where we wanted to go it was not more than 20 minutes away. The location is great and the views of the canal are great if you are on floors 2,3 or 4.
The staff is outstanding. Very warm and helpful. The hotel is charming. The rooms are what we expected for 3 stars. It could be updated a bit but we were happy. The bed was really comfortable. If we did not get a good night sleep somtimes it's beacuse life on the canal is noisy.
The rooms vere cleaned but ours was not vaccummed well each day.
Oh, very inportant, there is an elevator! great after a long 20 hours of travel to get there. The hotel photo is very accurate.

on arrival we was warmly welcomed by Will, who upgraded us to a lovely room overlooking Amstel canal,.,the room was clean tidy, with tea/coffee making facilities. the sheets and towels were clean and changed daily, the staff were friendly and made us feel very welcome,.,even offering breakfast at 1pm as were late risers,.the area in which the hotel was situated was quiet but everything we needed was only a short walk away. we had a perfect couple of days and thanks to Will and staff for making our first experience of Amsterdam one to remember,.,. we will be back in August,..,
