We (baby-boomer couple) stayed for 3 nights. Ieke and Frank were very helpful with advice on nearby restaurants, and local attractions, concerts etc. and travel, and Puma, the cat, was always there to greet us. The do-it-yourself breakfasts (and other meals, if you wanted a sandwich or eggs, panckakes later) suited us perfectly with a big fridge to put your own stuff in as well as being able to use the goodies provided. The 'kitchen' is very small and only two/three people could sit and eat at once, but the room we had also had a table. Yes, if other guests left a mess before you got to the kitchen, this could be off-putting, but we were lucky in this respect. Also it might be noisy if guests got back very late and decided to party in the kitchen, but I expect Frank would ask them to shut up if they did. We never heard the parrots or dogs in the evenings or early morning so again no problems for us - guests are on the first floor and hosts and menagerie at ground level. The location is in a quiet street and perfect for museum/music lovers - 8 minutes walk to the Van Gough and Rijk Museums and 2 minutes more to the Concertabouw. Trams are half a block away, a well-used and reliable local restaurant almost opposite and countless others of all types within 10 minutes walk. As well as the train/tram route from the airport, there is a 370 bus every half-hour from the airport to Leidseplein, about 8 minutes walk away from the Flynt.
The hotel is excellent for independent travellers who enjoy the freedom of breakfasting/snacking whenever at a very reasonable price - 80 euros plus 5% tax for the room. Amsterdam is wonderful and we'll be back there and at the Flynt.
