My first stay at the Meininger Hotel which is right at the Sloterdijk train station on the edge of downtown Amsterdam to catch an early flight from AMS the next morning. This train station is a major hub for local transportation and the last stop for most trains on the way from AMS airport on the way to Centraal Station. It is maybe 5 minutes on the train to downtown but this is more expensive than taking the bus (20 minutes) or the trams (20 minutes with a transfer) that also stop here using a 24-hr or longer transit pass available from the front desk. The area is a very isolated transportation-hub and nothing in the immediate vicinity. The hotel is a modern multistory hotel with a young and lively clientele (at least on Sunday in May). I had a very nice but very small single room with a clean, modern bathroom. Cafeteria style food and drinks in the hotel, only a Starbucks and convenience store in the train station. Check in starts at 3pm but I was able to leave my luggage when I arrived in the morning. A good value if you are willing to ride the transit to see the sights and eat downtown just returning in the evening.
