“12 years on it's the best hostel I've stayed in in a long time”

Stayed here for a conference. Having stayed here previous I was intrigued about its present condition.
It's still lovely. Good central location - friendly & helpful staff - good breakfast.
Bit of a faff having to show a piece of paper to gain entry. That's the only comment regarding improvements.

I had a generally nice stay here for 4 nights. I particularly chose this hostel because it's not a party hostel and didn't want to worry about stoned and drunk people at bedtime. It's also within walking distance the Dam Square, metro, Central station, red light district and red light district.

The 4-bed female dorm I stayed in was clean and had comfortable beds. The ensuite bathroom, although small, had a really nice hot shower. The bathroom looked clean but smelled of pee (must be the pipe system?). Every morning, there are breakfast options (toast, muesli,or hot -pancakes, French toast), and coffee, tea and juice.

Although a Christian hostel, they don't push you to attend the bible discussions. I also really enjoyed the open mic night with free food.

For improvement: strengthen wi-fi (sketchy wi-fi in the room), a lobby perhaps for a mingling atmosphere, access cards instead of the paper you have to present every entry, help with luggage for the long flight of stairs

Great place stop..could not fault the place its in a great location and cheap. We had a group of 12 and we only need a place to sleep at night which this place was great for doing, as soon as we booked up the staff was very helpful, emailed all the time with information and when we got there the guys on reception were also brilliant very helpful and friendly both checking in and checking out. Would recommend this place to anyone.

We stayed in a 16 bed dorm room which was better than I was expecting. There are wooden dividers between beds so you still have privacy. Everything was pretty clean, especially the toilets and showers which again pleasantly surprised me. It was a bit more expensive than I would have liked but it's location was unbeatable; even though it's only a street away from the red light district it felt safe, especially with the security they have for the entrance. It;s also within walking distance of the train station and most attractions. Even though it's a Christian hostel there wasn't any kind of pressure to take part in religious events and most people staying seemed to not be religious. The staff were friendly and helpful. The only drawback was being in a room on the ground floor which backed on to the communal courtyard and bar; on friday nights there is a band night, so bring earplugs if you want to sleep!

it's a very good Youth Inn, it's not a hôtel! but for students it's a good compromize between price and fun. you don't need to take the metro or the tram, because you're in the middle of the Amsterdam heart, the red quarter, the beatiful Jordaan, and Harleemmerplein. a lot of activities could be join by foot the museum are not very further 10-15 by foot.
but be carreful to the stolen and the girls alone, but you have 2 or 3 room only for women and it's more safe if you are a little bit affraid. the place is clean but the breakfast not fast and disspointed. You could have the dinner if you want it's the less money to eat solution! a good adress only for the "routards"

I stayed here from July 27- Aug 1, 2013 while traveling solo through the Netherlands. The rooms are clean and comfy, but bit old. The location is great and I felt very safe throughout my stay. The staff are very friendly and helpful.

The only draw back is having to navigate the super narrow and winding staircase that leads to the smaller women's dorm rooms.

Wake up early or you'll have to line up for breakfast.

I was immediately impressed by the hugely organised, friendly and professional welcome upon checking in, whilst at the same time vaguely bemused by fact that Shelter City is an overtly Christian hostel (not advertised!). To be fair, this wasn't a bad thing - the staff were great and always willing to help out however they could - no mean feat, given that this was one of the busiest times of the year.

I stayed in a six bed room (paying a premium for the privilege) and was comfortable and slept well both nights. The included breakfast was basic (no toast, just bread with ham and cheese) and I thought it was odd that if you wanted more than one small cup of coffee you had to pay for it ... I presume this was because there was no self-catering and the in-house cafe was there to make a profit, not to benefit the backpackers.

The location is great (if you don't mind staying in a street full of brothels) and this was certainly my motivation to book in the first place (the location, not the brothels!!).

There are four publicly accessible computers plus free wifi, but it's very, VERY slow - be warned! No air con, so my room and the bathroom were both stifling at times ... it WAS unusually hot, however, and I suspect that for perhaps eleven months of the year this would not be an issue, though ventilation or exhaust fans in the shared bathroom would be a vast improvement.

There is no smoking or drinking allowed on the premises, but they do have a pleasant courtyard outside the cafe (where the wifi is no worse than anywhere else in the building).

Pros: Location / Staff / Security

Cons: Expensive / No self-catering

Room Tip: The six bed male room was certainly quiet, though far too small to be comfortable when fully booked...
