Just your average, cheap basic hotel but with a great location (but within Amsterdam any hotel would be a great location as everything is within walking distance) and I WOULD stay again. However, there is a Lidl literally around the corner from the hotel so this was great for drinks etc and there are tram stops extremely close (we got the tram from the airport with ease: around 7 euros for 24hr ticket, or 2.40 for 1 hr (this is just one use)) We arrived at 9ish and were able to leave are bags downstairs before check-in. Same when we checked out, we left our bags in the dining area with no trouble. There are helpful cards next to the reception desk about places to go/things to do, and most of these include a discount/free gift if you take them with you to the place. There is also a communal fridge for you to use, but for us it was down so many stairs that we only used it once.
We had a quad room which is on the 4th floor. There is no lift, and the stairs are EXTREMELY steep. If you are disabled or have difficulties climbing stairs DO NOT stay here! Or people with children should really consider the dangers of this. One family had to carry each child one by one up due to the danger. However, I don't think this is a unique quality to this hotel as many of the bars also had very steep stairs. The staff did not help with our bags at all, and therefore carrying really heavy bags up four flights of stairs was very difficult, we were literally just left to it. Overall the staff are quite unfriendly, unhelpful and uninterested in guests.
NONE of the quad rooms have balconies, don't be fooled by the website info, I don't think staff quite understood what we meant by balcony. We requested and were told we could have a room with a balcony, however it was just a window with a wide window ledge which you could sit on (quite dangerous). There was another window too but this didn't open. We asked about the balcony, and they said the only other quad room had it (which they had agreed to give us), and so we asked if we could move to this room. We had to wait til the next day, and were told we would have to check out of our room at 10, and take our bags ALL THE WAY DOWNSTAIRS!! Bare in mind the other room was literally next door, RIDICULOUS! We were told to do this because both rooms had to be simultaneously cleaned, and couldn't change til 2pm. However, we discovered it had been cleaned a lot earlier, and therefore could have just moved straight to that room. Whether it was communication problems or extremely unhelpful staff with absolutely no common sense I don't know. After all this, the room DID NOT HAVE A BALCONY! But two working windows, so it was better. And cooler as it faced the courtyard instead of the street.
Each room had 4 single (comfortable) beds, the sheets were slightly stained but not the worst i've seen. We had no toilet paper on arrival so had to ask, nor any soap. There are also signs saying a charge will be applied if found smoking or if found with the windows open after 10pm but no staff mentioned this to us. The rooms are a decent size, and are not uncomfortable to be in.
The provided breakfast is VERY minimal, limited number of boiled eggs, ham, limited bread to make your own toast, butter, jam, orange and a free coffee machine (it's only free at breakfast time). This 'restaurant' area is also quite small, it's not the best.
AMSTERDAM TIP: MAKE SURE YOU BOOK ANNE FRANK ONLINE. THE QUEUE WAS CRAZY!!
