I loved this hotel! The Hotel Asterisk is fairly small, but what they lack in size they make up for in character. The hotel has a great location near several major museums, and is not far from nightlife either (but far enough that you can't hear it at night).
One thing that was quite nice is that this hotel is completely drug free (unlike some), meaning that no drug-taking is to take place on the premises. They take this very seriously.
The rooms are nice and clean, many with private bathrooms (all the bathrooms were nice and clean as well) and ours had a balcony (no view though, we were' on the first floor).
The hotel has a large breakfast room, where they serve a fairly traditional continental breakfast.
But the best part of the hotel was the staff. They were all openly friendly and extremely helpful. One woman in particular did all she could to assist my friend in a bike-rental-place-took-my-passport scenario. They were all very nice, I repeat, very nice, and willing to chat away at all hours.

  • Liked — the friendliness and helpful attitude of the staff
  • Disliked — not particularly attractive from the outside

These people greet you and handle your stay in a most excellent manner. The rooms are comfortable, the neighbourhood is definitely family oriented.

If you are driving a privately owned vehicle, you might wish to learn of Amstelveen...and how it is that you might park for free during the interim, as absolutely everything is very nearby..and if you wish..cabs might be hailed on a whim.

Just remember, that the Hotel Asterisk is located in a quiet area. The people prefer it that way.

I live on Oahu, and love to visit for the change of season that can be experienced there, as it is quite a transition to be amongst such a lovely and different people..quite a different world.

Aloha

P.S.
Thanks for helping me change my tire!

Stayed here in Feb 07. Was meeting up with friends for a night out in the 'Dam but no-one lives locally so it was a cheap bed for the night and was excellent value. Very clean, very well run place. Strict no drugs policy (incl. weed, etc.) keeps it that way. Contrary to popular belief most of us Nederlanders don't smoke weed so it's nice avoid the drug tourists

Single rooms are on the small side but I've stayed in worse at over double the price in lesser cities (e.g. Utrecht, Maastricht).

Amazing value for the price - why anyone would contemplate a hostel is beyond me as the price is not much more than a dorm room... (unless your sole purpose of coming to NL is to smoke weed: if so you're missing the real NL)

Highly, highly recommended.

  • Liked — Exceptionally well run, very reasonably priced, great value for money, best in 'Dam for price
  • Disliked — Early check out and early breakfast (reflects clientelle though)

My husband and I stayed there with a group of friends, (8 of us)for four days. It is set in a quiet street away from all the hurly burly. It is a short walk to all shops , good food and night life. Also around the corner is a good supply of trams to take you all over the city. The room was large with a good sized bathroom, and we were one of the lucky ones to have a balcony. The breakfast had a variety of cold meats cheeses, pates, cerials and much more. Recomend this hotel to anyone, and we would certainly stay there again. A good value for money hotel.

We stayed in the Hotel Asterisk for four days and thought it was fantastic. The rooms weren't large, but the size was just fine for two people and very very clean. We were only ever in the room for sleeping, so it was perfect. The various people working at reception were very nice and the breakfast was healthy and sizeable. the stairs were extremely steep and the lift was ancient, so I would not recommend the hotel to infirmed guests. The location was so great as it is around the corner from the Henekien Brewery, a 10 minute walk to the Leidesplein, and 15 to the Rembrandtplein. The prices are cheaper on the hotel website than on any budget hotel websites, so we saved 20 euro. We had a shared bathroom, and while not convenient, the shower was clean and we only had to use the bathrooms on other floors a few times. The street was very quiet and the houses on the block have gorgeous interiors (I'm a bit nosy...), but the construction was still going on down the street, though it wasn't too loud. We would recommend this hotel to anyone who does not mind a small room and steep stairs!

  • Tips/Secrets: — The vending machine sells cans of Henekien for 1.20...a way better deal than most places!
