“good hostel, but too expensive”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 30, 2010

in general, the hostel was good. it's located in a good place, not far from the city center and the night clubs, although in my opinion that's not an important thing because night life in amsterdam isn't really good, at least in comparison with the spanish one. pubs are bad and expensives, for me it's a calm city to smoke pot and be with friends. it seems to be a small city and hostels locations are not so important because you can arrive to the city center quite rapidly. for example, due to problems finding a way to arrive to amsterdam's train station to go to the airport we looked into the posibility of going there by walk instead of using the buses or trams. so that's an idea of how small the city is.

the staff is nice, not the best in the world but it's ok. our room was clean but it seemed that the staff didn't clean it everyday. we left the hostel with the idea that if we had stayed there in late august the room would be much dirtier; in mid july it was correct, the floor a bit dusty and the sheets a bit stained but the wc and the shower were ok.

bunk beds were good and sleeping was ok, but it's a hostel and if you have to share the room with other people you may get wake up in the middle when people enter the room after going out late.

the hostel's security was very good, there are people all over the first floor at all hours, in the billiards, in the computers, sitting in the couches with a beer in their hands or outside the hostel smoking pot. the hostel is next to vondelpark so if you want to eat magic mushrooms that's a great place to have the trip.

the worst thing was the prices, VERY expensive. bring your own towels because hostel ones are really small and they cost €3.50! the price per night was also expensive, but less than other hostels. it seems that holland is an expensive country in general. people are very materialists, something that collides with the idea that some may have about the country due to the legal permisivity with drugs or prostitution.

breakfast was included with the price and it was really good, so make use of it.

in conclusion, the hostel was good. even if you find bad comments in my critic, i don't think you will find anything better in amsterdam for the same price.

Travelled in a group to Amsterdam in March and stayed at the Stay Okay Hostel - Vondelpark.
The hostels I was very surprised with as they were really quite nice! I've never stayed in a hostel or a doom room before and had low expectations until now.
The room had 3 sets of bunk beds which didnt look comfortable but actually really were! and a really nice view out of the window! you have to make your own bed but we didnt mind, we thought it was a bit of a laugh. The hostel has a pool table in the lobby and an ice cream machine we visited every night at just over a euro!
There was a lovely park outside the hostel which you had to walk through to reach the main roads. Only problem we had with the hostel was its location. Although only a 5min walk to nearby coffee shops, canal, eateries and the brewery, the red light district and all of the other attractions were at least a 20 min walk away and we couldnt find the tram stop! a taxi was around $10 euros which is ok if your in a group like we were.
If you stay here try Mellow Yellow coffee shop a 5 min walk away and also La Carrosel for pancakes.

I found in the old refurbished house a nice place where to stay for 4 nights.
My shared room was confortable, nice and it had new furnitures. Nice price for a good quality.
I meet nice people over there.
Every morning a had a big and good breakfast(buffe) with many kinds of bread, fruits...
It is 15 minutes far from the center and the surrounding area its nice with Vondelplark very close to the tram.

Overall the hostel was great. We just stayed two nights, 5 of us in a 6 bed dorm and had a great time. The location is great with Leidsplein being within a few minutes walk - good for a night out - and the 1, 2 or 5 trams going into the centre of town & close to the red light district. The shower could have been a bit cleaner and make sure you bring a towel and the staff weren't overly friendly but other than that, I would recommend this place to anyone! Lone girls might not like the walk down the dark path next to the park too, as someone else said.

As far as a place to stay, be smart! Book a bed and breakfast instead of a hostel - Less of a charge and a better living area without half the hassle. We stayed in a Stayokay hostel in Vondelpark only to have a freelance (by freelance I mean they are hired independently and not at all associated with the hostel itself) security officer barge into our room while we were sleeping and accuse us of smoking - but there is no smoke anywhere and we had been asleep for hours by then. So I have this Middle Eastern security guard named Omar breaking in on my girl and I MID SLEEP - accusing us of breaking hostel rules and confiscating our backpacks. Needless to say, I WAS LIVID. I spent most of the rest of the night up yelling at the two-man arabic security team. In the morning, I was given a sincere apology by a stayokay manager, all my items were returned and all they really did for my trouble and night of no sleep was give me a free t-shirt.
Moral of the story, avoid stayokay hostels. When the incident happened, there was absolutely no one on staff at the hostel, so they relieve all managers and employees for the night, while they let an independent security team take over. I demanded numerous times for a manager's phone number to which the security guys responded nervously and told me to wait until morning. I was down there yelling and arguing with poor Omar until he was saying, "What I can do sir? You must talk to me respectfully," Yah, like the respect he gave us by entering without knocking and accusing us for smoking in a room with absolutely no smoke in it. I wouldn't trust any hostel that doesn't have easily accessible management 24/7. At night, they leave all guests at the whims of inexperienced security guards who will enter without knocking and throw impulsive accusations your way.

Clean room, clean private full bathroom in room, friendly service...some noise in hallways late at night, but nothing earplugs couldn't take care of...no lockers...great breakfast, but get there a little early - they start clearing it all out 15 min. earlier than it says. Dark walk down the path to hostel at night ( i'm a solo female traveller), felt weird about that a first, but noticed the path is usually busy w/other hostellers going to & from...liked being practially inside Vondelpark & next to Leidseplein (smoking) action, would stay there again...
