“Clean and friendly hostel in a great location.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 27, 2013 via mobile

I stayed in the Stayokay Vondelpark hostel for 7 nights. I had a great stay. I actually switched from another hostel nearby to this one because I loved it so much. The rooms are very clean, the facilities are nice, the wifi actually works unlike most hostels, the bar is great, the breakfast is very tasty, and most of all, the people who work at hostel are just amazing. I've never met such friendly and kind hostel staff as the ones at Stayokay Vondelpark Hostel during my travels. The location is great too. Vondelpark is absolutely gorgeous, and a lot of the city attractions are nearby. I highly recommend this hostel to everyone. Keep up the good work Stayokay staff!

Accommodation generally seems quite expensive in Amsterdam so my friends and I booked an 8 bed dorm in this hostel for the weekend.
Rooms were basic but functional: hot water in the shower room, plenty of plug sockets, shower, sink and toilet all separate (important when sharing with others) and comfy enough beds, although it was annoying having to make your bed on arrival.
The staff at the hostel were friendly and helpful. We bought tickets for some of the museums at reception and this got us a discount and fast track queuing, which is great for the weekend queues! You can also rent bikes from the hostel, although we didn't do this.
Breakfast was simple but tasty. Freshly baked bread, meat, cheese, cereal, jams and hot drinks. The queues were very long though so it was worth getting up a little earlier to avoid the 9.30 rush.
The location was also great. Vondel park is huge and lovely to walk around. Easy walking distance to all the main attractions too.
Overall, it was a nice enough stay, but I think next time I visit Amsterdam I would rather pay a little more and stay in a hotel room as I don't think the prices were competitive enough here.

We stayed here for two nights in a 6 bed dorm in block C (booked an 8 bed dorm so we were happy). On arrival the reception/common area was good with couches, computers, tables, vending machines and a bar/cafe.
The room itself had a separate toilet and shower, narrow lockers (bring a padlock) and bunks with bedding ready for you to make your bed. The room was clean and the beds were sturdy so no creaking which was good.
Breakfast is great, a lot of variety with meats, cheese, fresh bread, jams, other rice thins and things, fruit, cereal, hard boiled eggs, juice, coffee, tea and yoghurt. It is included in your stay so definitely make the most of it.
Wifi is free but only available in the common areas. That's fine though as there are plenty of places to sit, and some power points to charge your devices. You can pay to use the Internet on their computers if you haven't got a wifi capable device.
Free walking tours depart from the hostel, and you can buy tickets to some attractions at reception, some at discounted prices.
The bar was good and you can get meals for reasonable prices. There are events there some nights, and also happy hour with 50% off some drinks.
Sadly we had awful roommates who came back very late both nights stinking of weed and talking and snoring loudly. I guess we could have used ear plugs! (They sell them at reception.) Unfortunately you never know what your roommates will be like, but it is the price you pay if you can't afford a private room. It was very expensive to stay here on a Saturday, so be prepared for that if coming on the weekend. Sunday was a better price! Not worth the money, but I got the picture that everywhere was expensive to stay in Amsterdam on the weekend.
The location was good, close enough to the things you want to see if you go for a wander, and right beside the park.
Some of the staff could be more polite (we witnessed one being quite rude to some girls who were having a problem) but it was a mixed bag - some were great too.
You can leave your luggage in lockers you rent downstairs. You can only use the luggage room if you're in a group of 10 or more or your bag is too big for the lockers. It's 20c an hour or something like that, so not expensive.
Overall this hostel was good. It definitely had a big hostel feel (it's big with 3 blocks of rooms), and a large variety of people stayed there. I'd recommend it to other travellers who don't mind big hostels.

Dear,

Thank you for your detailed review! We are glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay at Stayokay Vondelpark.

You are right about the weekend price, the Saturday is more expensive then the days during the week. Hmm unfortunately you were sharing the room with a person like you described. Always let the reception know, we could have found you a different room.

Kind Regards,
Anna from Stayokay

Just back from a week stay at stayokay! This hostel had all basic amenities that it should. Wifi is available in all public areas but not in rooms. The rooms are very basic with a narrow locker available for your belongings (remember to bring a padlock) as they are not provided. The room was clean as was the toilet. Only one window in our room opened which made it quite stuffy as the weather hit great temperatures but this was only in the morning or at nights. This hostel is perfect for a bed to sleep in whilst exploring Amsterdam. The location itself is brilliant just 2 minutes from leidseplein and about a 15-20 minute walk from dam sq. The beautiful vondelpark is situated right next to the hostel. Would definitely stay in this hostel again as it provides a clean room, toilets and friendly atmosphere.

Thank you for your response!

Great to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us!
You are right, the location is wonderful! Especially next to the beautiful Vondelpark.
Maybe for in the future, you can ask for a van at the reception. For the warm days this could be really comfortable.

Kind Regards,
Anna from Stayokay

I have read many reviews on this forum about this hostel however, having stayed in other hostels around Holland I feel that this one was pretty average for the price. The rooms were very clean and were regularly tidied. We had to make our own beds which was pretty tiring having arrived pretty late to check in. There was also only wifi in the reception area, which was very slow, the staff said that this was to help people socialise however I did not see many people socialising outwith their groups in that area. And the variety of people who were staying there, families, those travelling alone, and those with friends were pretty much staying in on their phones on the internet in that area. I feel it is the right of the customer to be able to chose whether you have wifi in your room nowadays as it is a fairly free service in most places, and different people need it for different reasons (calling family, working etc.) I would say if you are staying at this hostel to perhaps come as a big group so you can enjoy the experience better. At night the noises from the front courtyard kept us up all night and it didn't show any signs of stopping, therefore if you need sleep perhaps bring a pair of earplugs! It felt like quite a party centered hotel so if you are coming for work then perhaps be a bit wary! The hotel staff dependent on who was working were fairly helpful, some more than others. The breakfast was my favourite part of the experience with a huuuuuge variety of things to chose from! I really enjoyed trying local meats and cheeses as well as a range of cereals, breads, beverages. The location is also very central and is close to many of the sites most tourists want to see. The tram service in Amsterdam is very good and there is a tram stop less than 5 mins away from the hotel. Overall a pretty average experience but I think I would have enjoyed it more in a big group so perhaps a personal opinion!

Thank you for your response at Tripadvisor

Good to hear that you liked our nice and clean rooms. Sorry to hear that you were dissapointed in making your own bed. We actually do not make our guests beds but present the bed linnen in plastic, this is more hygenic.

Did you let our reception know about the slow internet? They can restart the server or give you a different solution. I understand that you wished to have the Wifi in the rooms, unfortunately we have the free Wifi in our bar, lobby, gameroom and breakfast room.

I understand that you had difficulty with finding fellow travelers. Did you see our theme nights in our bar from 9PM- late? Or the Welcome party each Friday? The Free walking tour is also a great way to meet people from our hostel.

We have a 24/7 reception, in case of loud noise at night you can warn our night guards. You could also buy earplugs for 1,- euro at our reception.

Kind Regards,
Anna from Stayokay

Great to know that you enjoyed the breakfast!

No airconditioning, windows won't open, no breeze, so hot! Plus, no elevator to the top floors, and they ask that you don't use the elevator during certain hours?? The staff were super friendly, but the hotel isn't so good. The beds have bumpers on 3 sides, which aren't too comfortable. The sheets don't fit on the bed. The bathrooms aren't in too good of shape, old and dingy. They look like they are being used by 12 people a day and only cleaned once by someone who doesn't stay there. I read reviews that made me think it wouldn't be too bad, but I left after one night. Plus, they don't give refunds. :( The location isn't quite as good as people say either. It's down a rather long allyway with nothing nearby, but it is easy to find. I sure wish i would have liked it better. No plugs in the dorms to charge your phone, etc. Wifi in the lobby worked great though. I can't even remember all ofthe things that I didn't like about it.

Room Tip: Try to get a room on the 3rd floor or lower in order to use the elevator.

Dear EconElliot,
Thank you for your review on Tripadvisor!

Great to hear that you found the staff friendly! Good that you enjoyed the Free Wifi!
We are sorry to hear that your stay was not to your liking.
Unfortunately, due to the safety of our guests, you can not completely open the windows. Did you know that we rent out vans in the reception? Especially during the warm days this could have been a solution. I am suprised to hear that the bed linnen did not fit? You could always ask us for an extra pair at the reception.
Did you let our reception know about the bathrooms? That they were dirty? They are cleaned every morning by our housekeeping. Unfortunately we can not refund you on the day. Firstly since we have kept the beds free for you and secondly you can only change or cancel 24 hours before arrival. (for information about our cancellation policy, please go to our website www.stayokay.com).

Our hostel is located in the beautiful park Vondelpark. The famous musea Vincent van Gogh, Rijksmuseum and modern art museum are 5 min walk. The Leidseplein with most off the nightlife, bars (Hardrock, Paradiso, Melkweg) is also 5 min walk. The Damsquare and Redlight district is 15 - 20 min walk or you could go by tram.

We have plugs and electric chargers for your electronics in our lobby, bar and reception.

We appologize that we did not exceed to your expectations, We do hope that you enjoyed Amsterdam!

Kind Regards,
Anna from Stayokay
