“Comfortable accomodation”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 6, 2008

I was in Amsterdam for 2 nights and stayed in Stayokay 6 bed dorm.
Room spacious, secure accomodation in excellent location.
This hostel represents value for money and is modestly comfortable.
I would recommend staying, lockers available to store luggage at 0.2 euro per hour. Internet 1.50 euro for 15 mins....staff friendly and helpful.....

By the time I made it to the Stayokay Amsterdam Vondelpark hostel, I was on my third hostel in Amsterdam. The first was disasterous, the second better but not fantastic and the third (this one) the best of them all. It reminded me quite a bit of college, with a dormatory type of atmosphere that was friendly, safe and comfortable. The WiFi in the lobby brought a lot of kids together, and the food in the cafeteria wasn't bad (pretty cheap, too). The location is a bit further downtown, but it is still within a reasonable distance from the Red Light District and Centraal Station (then again, Amsterdam really isn't that big). I took a tram when I wasn't up for the walk and it was fine. The park's distance meant it was quieter and not quite as crazy. My room was shared with 3x other girls (who I did not know). We all kept to ourselves, which was fine, but we were considerate of one another's space. All in all, the best place to stay if you want the hostel experience in Amsterdam, in my opinion.

We stayed in a private room which was compact, clean and comfortable. Check in staff were a bit grumpy, but functional. They do not provide towels so bring your own (or I think you can hire them). One of the best hostels we have stayed in. Recommended. It is also close to Leidseplein, and right next to a park, so in a convenient location.

The Stayokay HI Hostel is a great place to stay in Amsterdam. The property is inside of Vondelpark, a major central park in the city. I have stayed here twice, and it has been busy both times...
The rooms are very clean and the breakfast included was top notch. Every private room has its own bathroom and shower. Sheets are included in the price of the room as well. Don't forget to bring your own towel, however, as they are not provided for free. Lockers are plentiful at the hostel, and there is even a book case where you can exchange one of your own for anything on the shelf... I would suggest this hostel to anyone travelling through Amsterdam.

2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 5, 2008

I booked an 8 bedded dorm last November for a weekend at the end of Jan. On arrival to the hostel on a late Thursday evening it turned out our booking had been completely mixed up by StayOkay due to renovations/construction work. The room I had booked was NOT available. After much confusion the reception staff did manage to slot us in to rooms that were available over the weekend. Although it was not as simple as this. We had to check out and check in to different rooms every day - it was an absolute disgrace. We had no access to ANY room between the hours of 10.30am and 2pm. We did not get what we paid for. It was a complete mess and caused a lot of disruption and stress to our trip. The plus points about the hostel are that it is clean, they provide a breakfast, good location and bed linen is at no extra cost. I found that the staff were not overly sympathetic about our situation and also felt that we were more of a burden to them when we HAD to put our bags into the locker rooms every day (because we had no dorm for a few hours). We had to change rooms 3 times!!! There initial token for an apology were drink vouchers for their bar - needless to say we were NOT IMPRESSED. They did give us a refund, eventually - but it took them 3 days to give us a final decision on it and I honestly feel that if we had not pushed it we would have got nothing. Oh watch out when checking in at reception, the average waiting time is at least 10 minutes, even if there is only one person ahead of you. Lots of delays!!

  • Liked — It was very clean.
  • Disliked — Disorganised and very slow reception staff.

A very well run hostel, dorm rooms are safe and clean, with friendly and professional staff. Convenient location - 5 minutes walk to the Rijksmusuem, Van Gogh Museum, and Heineken Brewery, and across the street from Leidesplein (lots of restaurants, bars, and a casino). Amsterdam is very compact, and the hostel is within walking distance or short tram ride to other parts of the city.

The rooms are adequately spacious, but the lockers provided are a bit too narrow to fit most luggage. There are pay lockers for short term luggage storage. Bedsheets are vacuum packed and spotless. Ensuite bathroom with separate sink, shower, and toilet in the all-female dorm I stayed in. Would have been nice to have individual lights for each bed. Also, while they cater to school groups, this is not a party hostel and a good place to get a good night's sleep.

They offer one of the best continental breakfasts I've had at a hostel - large selection of breads and crackers, cheese, yogurt, fruit, cereal, juice, coffee/tea/hot chocolate. They can also pack a cheap lunch.

It may be cost a bit more than some other hostels in Amsterdam, but Stayokay is a value for what it offers. I would definitely stay here again.
