I stayed here along with 3 others recently for my birthday. After reading the reviews, I was expecting it to be a nightmare, but in fact I was pleasantly surprised. For one, even though our online reservation stated 'bunkbeds', we had 4 single beds in our private room, plus an en-suite toilet and shower. One thing about our room however, which was right at the top on the 4th floor was it appeared to be very noisy at times. Maybe due to the fact that the cleaning room or attic was above us and we could hear every creak when somebody was there! This was only a problem for our first night, the other 2 nights it was fine.
Secondly, the free breakfast, although very limited, was an added bonus.
Thirdly, the location was pretty good. It is 5 mins walking distance to Dam Square and some coffee shops and good bars. However, the main clubbing strips such as 'Leidesplein' and 'Remembrandtplein' are not so close and do require a tram or taxi as they are about 20-30 mins walking distance. Saying that, taking a stroll to these places really give you a sense of what Amsterdam is about-architecture, the canals and the seemingly healthy lifestyle. Many residents opt for bicycles to get around, so always look both left and right when crossing or walking as even what appears to be pedestrian lanes turn out to be for motorcycles and bikes, we found this out when we nearly got ran over!! Furthermore, the location of the hostel is of course in the red light district, however, our street only had a number of windows and not like some of the other crowded streets further in. Although this would put some people off, I thought it added to the novelty of our stay. The fact that we were in the midst of 1 of the most famous districts in the world was pretty cool.
Overall, I would definitely stay here again next time I'm in Holland as the hostel itself is great value for money, we met some lovely fellow travellers, as well as the locals-they are very welcoming to tourists. However, if the hostel staff were a bit more pleasant and interactive rather than sitting at reception staring at a computer, this would ease new travellers woes a little more. Apart from this, a gem of a place!
Opt for a back room (not facing the street) as it is a bit quieter.
