In mid-October, my wife and I spent 6 days at Maes.
Our room was a newly-renovated, lofted space, just off the kitchen. The first level had the bedroom and a small lavatory, with commode and small sink, while the second level had a jacuzzi tub, larger sink and a very large shower space (without walls). The fixtures in the bath area, and the finish of the area were most luxurious.
Although the stairs to the lofted area were somewhat small(and I am rather large) it was extremely comfortable. One must remember that in a house in a city which taxed on width of the house, space is always at a premium.
The B&B is wonderfully located, near the train station (making day trips to other cities quite easy) and within walking distance (no more than 30 or 35 minutes at a good pace) of all the major points of interest in Central Amsterdam. It is also very near a number of tram lines (although we used those only once, because of the locale of the B&B and some cooperative Fall weather).
Vlad and Ken both work very hard, along with their staff, to make everyone's stay comfortable, and they succeeded with ours. They take an active effort in becoming acquainted with each guest's needs and tastes and attempting to help each meet those needs. I saw that both with myself and my wife and with other guests.
Breakfast each morning is a feast both of food and of conversation with the other guests (particularly featuring Ken's perfect, fresh croissants daily, an homage to his prior career as a pastry chef).
Vlad and Ken are quite free with recommendations as to worthy sites, both in and out of Amsterdam, and as to worthy places to eat, including many which are anywhere from a few steps to a few blocks from the B&B, and some which are further but well worth the effort to get to them.
Emblematic of their high level of help (and knowledge) was my realization, at 500 PM on Friday before our 900 AM Saturday flight, that a piece of my luggage had developed a zipper problem, followed by Ken's ability in short order to tell me the exact place to go to get a strap to remedy the issue, all of which I accomplished (including the 15 minute walk to the store and the 15 minute walk back from the store) well before 600 PM that same evening.
Other questions were answered as well, sometimes even before they were asked.
