Stayed here for 3 nights in September, and I really believe that this bed and breakfast made our whole Amsterdam experience so enjoyable. You have to have an appreciation for character at this place -- there's no TV, no phone in the room, and a long steep ladder to get up to the bathroom. In other words, this place isn't for everyone. But what Maes lacks in amenities, it makes up for in charm. Ken and Vlad gave us all of their recommendations for local restaurants, markets, and activities, so we were able to ditch the tourist persona and live like a local for a few days. It's in a beautiful area, surrounded by great cafes, close to the major sights but far enough away to be quiet and beautiful at night. It was our first time at a B&B, and as anonymity-loving hotel people, we were pretty nervous. But we would definitely go back. If you get the chance, stay here.

Great experience. Ken and Vlad are helpful and informative. If you are looking for a B&B - this is a great choice and alternative to cold hotels. Location is excellent. Be prepared for true Dutch row housing with narrow, windy stairs. Not for the faint of heart nor weak of bone - learn to pack less.

We stayed in the Heron house which was a great escape complete with kitchen and snacks.

Recommend highly.

We recently (July 2004) spent 4 nights at Maes B&B and had a wonderful experience. Ken and Vlad could not have been more helpful as my husband and I navigated Amsterdam, and kindly agreed to store some luggage while we traveled to Belgium for 5 nights. The B&B is located in a quiet, clean and charming part of the city not overrun with tourists, but with great shopping and restaurants. Highly, highly recommended!

Stayed here for 2 nights and only wished it was longer! Lovely, friendly welcome from both Ken and Vlad, who immediately led us to the breakfast - exactly what we needed after a very early flight (we loved the walnut bread). The location is just far enought away from the centre for quiet nights, but near enough to walk to everything. Top Thai restaurant next door is good too - portions are huge and delicious. Would recommend to anyone - we will definately come back, and next time for longer!

A great place to stay and see the real Amsterdam. The hosts Vlad and Ken were so helpful from the outset with advice in emails prior to our visit, right through to to the personal touch on arrival. The advice on where to visit at what time etc. was invaluable and the local knowledge on fine restaurants second to none. Breakfasts were cosy and you were treated as part of the family. The selection of ham, cheese and pastries was excellent. Look out for the mozzies at night!

A lovely place to stay with the personal touch..... and thanks for the flowers!
