A brilliant stay at Heren (Maes). It’s a great B&B in a superb area of Amsterdam. My husband and I stayed here for 4 nights and could easily have stayed for a month in early March 2008.
It was an easy 10 minute walk from the Amsterdam central station to the accommodation. Cafes/restaurants are abundant within a 10 minute walk and the local charm of the area is evident in its very location.
As other travellers have noted, the stairs are quite steep and narrow. This was our first foray into B &B’s and the room they gave us was very clean with a comfortable bed and tastefully decorated. It felt like home. This was a fantastic place. We had a room at the rear overlooking the garden. The bedroom with its own private bathroom was reached via a spiral staircase.
Breakfast was excellent and included jams, cereals, yoghurt, different kinds of bread, cakes, fresh fruit, ham & cheese and plunger coffee. It is also possible for guests to use the kitchen as they please (except during breakfast).
There is reasonably fast wireless internet -- and it's free.
Ken and Vlad are superb hosts’ very accommodating make you feel at home. As you'll see from other reviews, they have a reputation for being extremely helpful and courteous. It's entirely deserved.
I would definitely stay here again -- and can't recommend it highly enough. Thanks guys

My husband and I stayed here for 2 nights at the end of September. We enjoyed staying here and met other very nice travelers. We had some great conversations sitting around the breakfast table. Breakfast was really good and much better than we expected. Ken and Vlad were very accomodating. As other travelers have noted, the stairs are quite steep and narrow. They did not pose a problem for us because we did not bring heavy luggage on this trip. The room they gave us had a very comfortable bed and was tastefully decorated. We would love to stay here again.

  • Liked — Close to Anne Frank House, Vlad and Ken are very nice, comfortable
  • Disliked — nothing

I originally tried to book another B&B but it was full and they recommended Maes. This was a fantastic place, I had the Garden suite. It had its own private bathroom, which was like a spa getaway. The rooms were so clean, and decorated so nicely. The beds were so comfortable, every morning I debated if I should even bother to get up. Of course the smell of the fresh breakfast every morning made the decision quite easy. The croissants were one of the best things I have eaten in my entire life!!

Vlad was so kind, I had gotten lost (very lost, like ended up in a different city kind of lost) and he waited for me to arrive to check in and get me setup.

As with these older European homes, they are not hotels and do not have elevators. So stairs are steep, and if you are older or have to lug a large heavy suitcase, it maybe advisable to take your time.

Location was in Jordaan, which is a very nice neighborhood. About a 10 minute walk to the Amsterdam central station. Cafes/restaurants are abundant within a 10 minute walk. Not in the red light district, which is good since you wont have to hear the rowdy crowds deep into the morning hours.

PROs:
Location
Bedroom and bathroom facilities
Breakfast!!!
Wireless Internet
Owners/Staff - kind, helpful, is there another word for fantasticly-friendly

CONs: (if I have to give one)
Stairs - but its a home, not a hotel

  • Liked — Location and fresh croissants in the morning

Booked this Hotel when all other options had gone dry for a business trip. I'm used to staying at the Hilton or similar and was expecting the worst.
This place however, even for a straight bloke, this blew me away. Felt like home, almost.
Lovely people, peaceful rooms. The warmest and snuggest of duvets.
A place where you feel you've experienced the city and not just visited some clinical Hotel chain.
One of the only business trips I'd have loved to take the wife as the rooms were very romantic.

Price was very reasonable for what one got and the whole ambience was fantastic.

Fantastic location, though hard to find. All in all, one of the best stays I've had in the 10 years I've been visiting Amsterdam

  • Liked — The duvet and the bedroom. So Serine
  • Disliked — The stairs upto the attic.

Stayed at one of their apartments in Keizersgracht for 3 nights, from 18-21 Sep 2008. No breakfast, as our apartment is some distance away from their main apartment. The place is great. It's extremely clean, tidy and well equipped. For old people, do be careful of the Dutch stairs as they're really steep!! All in all.. Highly recommended!! Would definitely go back to them again if we're in Amsterdam!
