The owners of this B&B, Ken and Vlad, also rent out some apartments for visitors. My family and I came to Amsterdam a few months ago and stayed in one of them. The experience was absolutely terrific -- a great deal, which I'd recommend to any large group of people. So when I had to return by myself, on business, I decided to skip the usual corporate hotel and booked a room at their B & B.

The room was not huge, at least if -- like me -- you're used to American hotels. (I think they're about average by European standards.) And, since it's a B&B, it doesn't have a huge lobby with concierge, etc. This is basically a really old Amsterdam house, so the stairs are very narrow (no huge bags) and there's no air conditioning. If any of these things aren't your thing, you should probably stick to a regular hotel.

But if you don't mind these things -- and if you want something with charm -- then definitely consider staying here.

For one thing, the location can't be beat. It's in the Jordaan section, which is the old, upscale area known for its fine cafes and shops -- some of them literally just steps from the front door of the B & B. It's a bit quieter and less touristy than the center of town, since real people live here, etc. (Of course, sometimes people hang out at the cafes late, so you pick up a bit of small street chatter.) But it's also a (very) short walk to Dam Square, Central Station, and the city's major attractions.

It's also got reasonably fast wireless internet -- and it's free. If you're familiar with the rates they charge in many European hotels, you'll appreciate what a big difference that makes.

Rooms come with televisions and bathrooms, both modern. The beds are extremely comfortable. (At least mine was.)

The breakfast room has a full kitchen, available to guests to use as they please (except during breakfast, when they make coffee and serve pastries & pancakes.)

Finally, while there's no concierge, there's Ken and Vlad. As you'll see from other reviews, they have a reputation for being extremely helpful and courteous. It's entirely deserved.

I would definitely stay here again -- and can't recommend it highly enough.

We stayed the weekend of 15 - 17 August. We contacted Maes B&B based on the reviews I read here on trip advisor. They did not have any rooms available in the B&B, but do have an apartment only a block away. We stayed in a second floor apartment with a wonderful view of one of the canals. Ken and Vlad were professional and courteous hosts. Very informative and prompt with their service and helpful in giving us information about the area. They even arranged for a taxi for us at the airport to bring us directly to the property. The apartment was clean, has a small but full functional kitchen, large living room, and very comfortable large king size bed. The location was ideal. We were within walking distance of everything. Definitely rent a bike, as it's just a lovely way of getting around the city. I would highly recommend this property to anyone visiting Amsterdam. The great thing about Amsterdam is you can do as much or as little as you like. Just experiencing the city and walking the canals can be enough.

We stayed in Ken & Vlads B&B in August and had a wonderful stay in Amsterdam.

It was our first visit to the city and the central location was ideal in such a beautiful area of the city. The B&B itself was lovely, comfotable and with loads of character.

Vlad was kind enough to give us a quick guide to the city and some recommendations on where to eat which we tried both nights and both were very tasty.

We loved staying in the house and hope to return in the near future to see more of the city as our break this time was very short.

I'd have no hesitation in recommending it as a place to stay.
Thanks guys

At number 28 next to Maes B&B are the self catering apartments operated by Ken and Vlad.
We stayed for one week and could easily have stayed for a month. Not only are the units fully fitted with everything you need for cooking but small thoughtful items like electric converter plugs, an umbrella and free wireless internet all exceed one's expectations. A comfortable bed, spacious bathroom and lovely garden views all added to the pleasure of staying here.
The location could not have been better. We did not use a taxi for the entire stay apart from transfer from and to the airport. You can walk to Damrak in 10 minutes to the flower market in 20 and to virtually every tourist destination in under 30 minutes. It felt like being at home in your own neighborhood. We would not even consider any other alternative if we were going to Amsterdam. The B&B and apartments offer a good choice of style of living and ammenities. Reasonable, hospitable, comfortable and ideally located you cannot do better than this.

  • Disliked — Nothing apart from some steep stairs which are part and parcel of old Amsterdam

We stayed at the ‘Maes’ for 4 nights and it was brilliant.

It’s a great B&B in a superb area of Amsterdam and we both defiantly recommend it to anyone thinking of going. Our room had a LCD telly with a DVD player; everywhere was clean with fresh flowers throughout. The bathroom was spotless and the shower was ace (plenty of room for two ;-)). Opposite our room was the kitchen (breakfast area) it had an oven, fridge, freezer, hob and all pots and pans for making stuff (I’m telling you this because we sometimes struggled to find a nice place to eat). The breakfasts were good too.

Downers, No locks on the door when going out and no safe to put valuables; a little dodgy I thought.

Thank you very much Vlan, Ken and the guy who served us breakfast every morning.
