“Perfect location in central Amsterdam”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 3, 2013

My wife and I stayed here for 4 nights and had the attic suite in the Maes B&B. This is an outstanding location in Amsterdam! We arrived by train and the B&B is an easy, 5-minute walk away. Well ok, it maybe took us 15 minutes but that was simply due to us stopping to take pictures every 20 feet in this beautiful old city.
The room was truly magnificent (be careful of the stairs!), as the attic really has it's own separate bedroom, living room, and bathroom (shower only). Breakfast was another highlight of staying here as it is a wonderful continental spread and on most days carried us through to the evenings.
Maes is located in a perfect location. Turn left out of the front door and you are just a few short walking minutes away from the carnage of the notorious red-light district with the crowded bars, coffee shops, and window shoppers of every nationality. Turn right, and you find yourself in the Jordaan with its tree lined canals, waterside cafes, and a more serene side of the city.
For other tourist destinations, the Anne Frank House is less than 5-minutes away on foot. The museum area is a bit farther, but still easily walkable. The main shopping street is also just minutes away.
If, no, WHEN we get back to Amsterdam, Maes B&B would be our first choice for lodging.

I stayed a week in Maes B&B in early October. I had the ground floor self-contained apartment in the building next to the main B&B - with my own front door opening on to Herrenstraat! Made me feel almost like an Amsterdamer! My apartment had a living room, bedroom, bathroom, fully equipped kitchen (for those who wanted to cook for themselves, which I didn't).
Both Vlad and Ken made me feel very welcome and were really knowledgeable and helpful. I had breakfast each morning in the main B&B - really good, lots of variety, well presented.
Location is great - quiet spot, see three canals in the five minute walk (at slow pace) to the street where you can get a tram to where you want to go. To walk to the train station would be about 15 - 20 minutes at the most - it's one stop on the tram.
Highly recommended.

This was our second 3 night stay in Amsterdam in 6 years and we wouldn't stay anywhere else but Maes B&B. The accommodations are wonderful. After our flight from Philadelphia and early morning train ride from Brussels our first night there we slept 12 hours straight. The bedroom was so quiet and the bed so comfy. We had the whole second floor of the main location and it was perfect. Nice living room and a beautiful modern bathroom. Milo took excellent care of us in the morning for breakfast. It was the best breakfast served on our trip. Vlad is a very accommodating host, giving good advice for things to do and see and an excellent recommendation for dinner. The location is so close to the train/bus station, in a very safe, quiet neighborhood and within walking distance of everything.

Our group of 6 recently stayed @ Maes -Heren B&B in Amsterdam. There are at least 2 [or more] separate houses and we were @ Heren. We had 3 ensuite rooms on the garden level. Two rooms had skylights, which opened and closed remotely, so no need to worry if it began to rain, as well as small, enclosed private patios, open to the sky.The 3rd room was on the street side with a large window, due to it's age[ house was built in the 1700's] could not be opened, but allowed a lot of light to enter. There was A/C throughout. Rooms and baths were nicely equipped.A very pleasant dining room, where a generous breakfast, fresh fruit, cheeses, ham,a variety of breads, juice, choice of coffee was served. On the other side of the house was a large sunny living room with floor to ceiling windows, facing the canal. Another kitchen, fully equipped, to be used by the guests,Coffee, tea and snacks available and guests could prepare their own meals. Jason the "house person" was a very pleasant young man who prepared the breakfast and was available for tourist advise. Ex., a special rate for taxi to the airport, special rate for evening canal boat trip etc. The location of HEREN was very good. We found AMSTERDAM very walkable. We did not meet Ken, but found Vlad to be an excellent host. Our only suggestion, IF you do not like to be GARDEN LEVEL, state this when making reservation. There are rooms on the top floors, but they were occupied and we did not venture there. As with houses in AMSTERDAM, stairs are narrow and there are LOTS of them!

Room Tip: If you do not want to be @ garden-level be sure and state that.

Fantastic 2 night stay here. The rooms are beautiful though be careful of the steps - the staircases are all very narrow so not safe for kids or people who are unsteady on their feet.

Ken and Vlad are wonderful hosts and the breakfast is fantastic (we joked with other guests that the breakfast was the highlight of the trip!)

When we arrived, we took a quick (~15 minute) train to Amsterdam Centraal from the airport and then walked to Maes from there which took another 10-15 minutes. We were a bit confused when we arrived because the sign which says 'Maes' is very small on the door and we didn't see it at first.

Excellent location for everything. We didn't need to take any public transport the whole time we were away because everything is walkable.

We enjoyed our stay here very much. Had a room on the first floor, overlooking the small back courtyard unfortunately, but a lovely room nonetheless, lots of room and lovely bathroom with wonderful shower space. The only thing we found strange was there was no way to keep water in the modern bathroom sink. We stayed 3 nights and found the location excellent, right on a canal and easy walking distance to restaurants, bars and, of course, the canals. The breakfast each day was amazing, every taste catered for in a nice dining room. There is also access to not one but two beautiful kitchens, and a lovely lounge area overlooking the canal. Great service and would stay again.

My husband and I recently returned from a trip to Europe where we stayed in a 2-bedroom apartment owned by Maes B&B. The apartment is 2 doors down from the actual B&B and office.

It's in a wonderful part of the city, away from the mad tourist rush. And so you get to see the city for what it is.

Vlad had warned me that the steps to the apartment were steep and he wasn't joking. But it would be better to say that these were almost like a carpeted ladder vs. steps!!! It was a steep climb and definitely not for an elderly couple.

Our apartment was split over two floors - the living room, dining room with an outdoor patio and one bathroom was on the first level and the two bedrooms and another toilet and bath on the second level.

The apartment was perfect for our stay. The furnishings are comfortable and the kitchen was well equipped with crockery and cutlery. The outdoor patio was beautiful - overlooking the rooftops of other houses. If you're looking for something posh, this is not for you. If you like something comfortable and homely, it is perfect.

Vlad was very helpful with his tips for the city. He recommended we use Bike city for our bicycle rentals which turned out to be very good. And he also recommended where we could shop for groceries and places to eat. Seasons, a restaurant a couple of doors down from the apartment provided a great meal. There is a small bakery just across the bridge which is also one of the few places that opens by 8 a.m. Wonderful choice of bread and cakes and good to get breakfast.

For the location, the price we paid was great value. Definitely an option if you want to see the real side of this wonderful city.

Room Tip: If you don't like a steep climb, you may want to consider the other apartment on the first level...
