May 13, 2008 | Trip type: Business, Couples

My husband and I stayed at Maes and Heron B&B in May ’08 and had a lovely time. Ken and Vlad were a great help with booking, as we booked a room for ourselves for 2 nights and another for my father for 4 nights for a business trip. They arranged it all straight away and pre booked taxis for us both from the airport to ensure we were charged a fair rate.

My husband and I stayed in the ground floor studio apartment which was lovely. You have your own door off the street which leads straight into a lovely bright lounge with sofas, plasma tv, dvd player and stereo, you have a shower room with a big shower (and unusually in Amsterdam good water pressure!!), a bedroom with a massive bed (I nearly got lost in there!!) and a lovely kitchen. There is also a sweet little patio area, which is great for a drink after a long day. The apartment is clean and spacious and would be perfect for anybody staying for a while. We had breakfast included in the price which is at a communal table in the main B&B which had a good selection of food and attentive service from Jason. The only downside I could comment on is that in our room there was a lot of noise from the street and surrounding areas.

The B&B is in a great location, as long as you happy to have a decent walk (and are equipped with a map!). There are some lovely restaurants nearby which Ken and Vlad are happy to recommend.

My father stayed in the Yellow Suite which was also really nice, he had a lovely cosy lounge area, a fantastic (and massive!) new bathroom (once you figure out the tap/temperature hole things…) and a smaller (but not by Amsterdam standards) bedroom. His room seemed much quieter than the ground floor apartment, but both are great in different ways (but watch out for the steep stairs to the yellow suite, I wouldn’t fancy them much after a night out on the beer!!). We had a great stay and would definitely return.

This is a wonderful place to stay, so if your travel plans fit in with their requirements as a guest, you will thoroughly enjoy yourself. Ken and Vlad are very professional, thoughtful and accommodating hosts, and Jason was also very helpful and welcoming. The house is charming and very well located, the breakfast delicious and it was great having the use of the guest kitchen whenever we wanted to make a pot of tea or coffee. We also spent a night in one of their gorgeous apartments and can't imagine any place more comfortable and elegant to stay in for a period of time in Amsterdam.
Because their place is very special but also very small, they have some requirements of their guests in terms of length of stay and if you are looking for a more impersonal, hotel-like experience then this isn't the place for you but for any small groups in Amsterdam for more than one night who enjoy meeting people, staying in truly authentic but well-maintained homes, this is a gem!

We stayed here a while ago now, but am only just getting round to writing reviews here so thought I would recommend this wonderful B&B to you...
It's probably the best B&B we've ever stayed in, quaint, full of character and has wonderful hosts that do so much to help you. Lovely communal areas mean you can chat and have breakfast with other guests (including homemade cakes and pastries!).
Great location and fantastic value, if you can book here for a few nights it would make a wonderful weekend break in this excellent city.
I'd recommend hiring some bikes, it's so easy to get around this place as the city is so small. After our experience you couldn't get anywhere better than Maes!

My 4th time staying at Maes, this time with my teenage daughter Alice for her birthday. Ken was on holiday but Vlad made such a fuss over her, I can't thank him enough for his hospitality and contribution towards our memorable stay in Amsterdam. Breakfast time relaxing in their little kitchen is a great opportunity to meet people from all parts of the world and Vlad's engaging smile, informed conversation and humour makes a great start to the day.
We'll be back asap!

The Good:
Great location. You can walk to the Amsterdam Centraal station in about 10 minutes. 2 blocks away from the tram which will take you to the museum district, train station, and everywhere else. The breakfast is very filling and extensive. Large kitchen for your use if you choose to cook your own lunch and dinners. The bathroom included a tub and a stand-up shower and was very roomy. They have a computer w/ internet that you're free to use.

The not-so-good:
The inside of the tub was peeling (the paint?) so a bath was out of the question. The bed took up most of the room, and there was barely enough room for 2 suitcases (in our cases, a suitcase and a large duffel bag).

The Bad:
The only key you get is to the front door. Your room does not get locked when you leave. You basically stay there and just trust others not to steal your stuff. There was also no door to the bathroom, just a curtain. I'm not a very private person with my husband, but some deeds just need to be done with a closed door.

Overall:
For the price we paid, I would've expected a bit warmer reception. Our room, albeit had a nice view, was facing the street and we were woken up pretty early by construction, traffic, and people. The breakfast was great as was the size of the bed & the bathroom, but the room was a bit on the small side and the lack of privacy will keep me from coming back.
