Just returned home this week from our wonderful trip to Amsterdam. Couldn't wait to write this review. We have stayed at many bed and breakfasts and this is by far the best. After flying all night Ken greeted us at the door at 7:30am and let us know that our room was already available and to join them for breakfast. What a pleasant surprise. We thought that we wouldn't have our room until that afternoon.

Vlad and Ken arranged all our taxis. Which was wonderful. From the moment we walked into their lovely home we felt welcomed. They were always available to answer questions about the area but NEVER bothered us.

Our room....the Red Room was a nice room with a private bath. We also had 2 chairs and a small table so we could sit and have a glass of wine while watching people on the street below.

The breakfast every morning was amazing. Jason greets you each day with fresh coffee and a huge breakfast spread. All of which was included in the price. Special touches were all the fresh flowers. We can't thank these guys enough for opening their home to us. Treat yourself....plan a trip to this bed and breakfast. We will be going back!!!

My husband and I stayed in one of the apartments close to the bed & breakfast. It was perfectly situated, overlooking the Singel and equipped with most things you could want. The bathroom and kitchen are tiny but adequate, the lounge and bedroom were a good size. Vlad was very helpful with the information he supplied and there are guidebooks for guests' use. Definitely far better than staying in a tiny hotel room!

my partner and i just spent a week at Mae's bed and breakfast. by and large, all the previous (positive) reviews are accurate, it is a nice place, fabulous location, quiet, friendly, and Ken and Vlad are always available to answer questions and offer help without ever being invasive.
the only mild b-side involved the housekeeping which was a little on the light side. everything was very clean upon arrival, which we appreciated, however although the linen was changed (the beds were made daily) every few days, which was fine, the bathroom was not fully cleaned the whole 6 days we stayed. again, on arrival everything was spic and span, but even without having palacial expectations, a clean sink/bathtub and water glass is always appreciated.
having said that, this would not prevent us from staying there again, as everything else about Mae's is wonderful.

  • Liked — location, owners, quiet, internet access
  • Disliked — narrow stairs, housekeeping

We booked a long Valentine's weekend in Mae's B&B based on the reviews in TripAdvisor and it was a fantastic decision. Our hosts were extremely welcoming, friendly and helpful.

Our room was AMAZING, the biggest one in the house, I believe, which is no mean feat for Amsterdam canal houses! We had a lovely sitting room in the front of the house, with lovely old furniture and wooden floors and the sun came streaming in every day. The bathroom had been very recently renovated and was fabulous - especially the "dramatic" Italian mechanism for turning on and off the tap! We had a nice strong shower AND a bath. I believe baths are not that common in traditional houses due to space. Then through to the bedroom at the back, which was very cosy with a big comfortable wodden framed bed that we had to force ourselves out every morning! I made it up for breakfast every morning - a lovely spread of breads, pastries, fruits and yummy little pancake thingies, which I cant remember the name of. Breakfast is at a very reasonable 9-11am too!

Jason advised us on the best place to rent bikes (Bike City) -lighter and less conspicuous that most other bike rentals models. And it was a great decision - the BEST way to get around Amsterdam - a little hairy at first but once you get used to it, its unbeatable and great fun!

Vlad gave us a superb recommendation on a restaurant called Cafe De Reiger, and was discribed as contemporary Dutch food - AH. Mazing. Really. We brought friends there and we all had the best meal out we'd had in a very long time! We had a few pints in Cafe de Prinsen on Prinzengracht first. Vlad also recommended, and I'll probably get the name wrong, Arunds Nest, a pub specialising in local Dutch beers, just around the corner from the B&B. So we finished off our last night in there! We also had dinner in Top Thai right next door to the B&B (where we discovered Vlad behind the bar!) and, while service was a little slow, it was really yummy and we were in no rush anyway!

Maes is a lovely B&B in a really central, and very lovely, part of the city and I would have absolutely no hesitation in recommending this B&B at all. When I go back to Amsterdam, it is where I will be staying!

I dont have my camera on me today, but I will try to upload some photos on our room another time.

  • Liked — Its was cosy and charming, with lots of personality
  • Disliked — A tiny bit noisy so bring ear plugs, and the steep stairs would be a no-no for people with walking difficulties

I booked a room for a week at Maes in preparation for an upcoming vacation. I asked some questions and requested pictures of our room in a series of emails.

I'm shocked at the reaction I received from Ken, the owner, who cancelled my reservation over email, saying that I was asking too many questions about his property and seemed too picky. I was particularly surprised considering all the positive feedback on this site.

I've stayed at lots of bed and breakfasts and hostels all over the world, and have never received a negative reaction when asking for pictures/information on a room from owners. I think as long as you are willing to take whatever they have w/out asking any questions, you'll be fine. But if you are looking for ANYTHING in particular (like a decent size room with a bed larger than a twin), you may want to look elsewhere.

I really hope that my experience is a solitary one, but considering all the rave reviews of Maes on Trip Advisor compared to the incredibly negative interaction I had with the owner of this place before I even stayed there, I thought it important to give fair warning to other potential guests.

Management response from maes1, OWNER
(Management representative)
Mar 12, 2008
in all the years we have had reviews on Trip advisor we never felt the need to respond to reviews with critical notes about or business but we feel that we are obliged to response to this review to clarify the situation...this persons reservation was booked for a room with us for a week after numerous emails and at least 7photos of the 2 best rooms in our establishment sent to her. it was not the questions but the fact the person did not really read the entire replies or actually look at the photos thoroughly. this person felt the first room was to small for her (now read the fact that she asked for only a room for 2 persons and Amsterdam in not renown for large rooms in a city that has the same situation as in Tokyo) we had offered her a suite with a large bathroom and jacuzzi bath. fair enough that person then wanted something larger. We then offered that person a 2 room suite (which had just come into our assortment) the entire 2nd floor of the house with a living room bathroom and a bedroom. there were 5 photos sent from us of the 2 room suite that we took ourselves of the suite after the renovation. That person then booked it...then decided after 2 days that after she looked at the photo again the bed seem to small fair enough the bed was a normal full double bed as in the USA not a twin as this person gives the impression. this person then asked for a room with a larger bed. All other rooms with exception of the 2 room suite are with Queen size beds so we offered a standard 2 persons bedroom with a Queen size bed, not a suite, only a standard room. This has now been the 9th email from since actually making the first inquiry to book a room. This person then came back with a note asking if the room we offered was ALSO a 2 room suite...when we actually fully explained in a description of the room what was offered as in all the other rooms/suites replies...but we realized more than likely this person would not have been happy with any room in our establishment. therefore to not disappoint her or to create a problem we cancelled the reservation and made it clear we felt she would not be happy staying in our B&B or rooms. This obviously didn't set very well with her but then again I cannot please everyone. We were very patient with this client after so many emails and answered every email she sent correctly and not rudely at all.
