We booked a long Valentine's weekend in Mae's B&B based on the reviews in TripAdvisor and it was a fantastic decision. Our hosts were extremely welcoming, friendly and helpful.
Our room was AMAZING, the biggest one in the house, I believe, which is no mean feat for Amsterdam canal houses! We had a lovely sitting room in the front of the house, with lovely old furniture and wooden floors and the sun came streaming in every day. The bathroom had been very recently renovated and was fabulous - especially the "dramatic" Italian mechanism for turning on and off the tap! We had a nice strong shower AND a bath. I believe baths are not that common in traditional houses due to space. Then through to the bedroom at the back, which was very cosy with a big comfortable wodden framed bed that we had to force ourselves out every morning! I made it up for breakfast every morning - a lovely spread of breads, pastries, fruits and yummy little pancake thingies, which I cant remember the name of. Breakfast is at a very reasonable 9-11am too!
Jason advised us on the best place to rent bikes (Bike City) -lighter and less conspicuous that most other bike rentals models. And it was a great decision - the BEST way to get around Amsterdam - a little hairy at first but once you get used to it, its unbeatable and great fun!
Vlad gave us a superb recommendation on a restaurant called Cafe De Reiger, and was discribed as contemporary Dutch food - AH. Mazing. Really. We brought friends there and we all had the best meal out we'd had in a very long time! We had a few pints in Cafe de Prinsen on Prinzengracht first. Vlad also recommended, and I'll probably get the name wrong, Arunds Nest, a pub specialising in local Dutch beers, just around the corner from the B&B. So we finished off our last night in there! We also had dinner in Top Thai right next door to the B&B (where we discovered Vlad behind the bar!) and, while service was a little slow, it was really yummy and we were in no rush anyway!
Maes is a lovely B&B in a really central, and very lovely, part of the city and I would have absolutely no hesitation in recommending this B&B at all. When I go back to Amsterdam, it is where I will be staying!
I dont have my camera on me today, but I will try to upload some photos on our room another time.
