“Great stay, friendly staff, cheap bar”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2009

Stayed in the pig on the 17-19 Oct. 6 guys on a stag. was very surprised by the high standard. our room was clean. The staff were great, very friendly and really helpful.
constantly seen staff cleanning there way throughout the hostle. The bar has a real good feel about it, very laid back. very local to city hot spots. Only down side was the freaking stair cases,so steep,( not good when you have been on the sauce all day). i did however find a small pile of cat turd in one of the halls, as soon as i mentioned this the staff clean it up right away. Great hostle would use agin not a problem

Stayed there for 3 nights and wouldn't dare to take a shower while I stayed there. Ok sure...the property may be old, probably had some historic floods affect it, but it is dusty and some humidity stink in it that made it intolerable. To add it up, the property has carpet that holds stink from prior clientel that have thrown up. Batrooms where not well kept. The worst thing was to see that in their kitchen while they did the preping for breakfast and even a different times there was always a cat walking over the counter. Not clean at all. I know it has great reviews probably because it has a room where you can smoke, but this was not even a comfortable room at all. Sits 10 but very uncomfortable place. If you too like comfort while smoking and a clean place where to be, avoid this place by all means. Not good at all.

I was only in Amsterdam for 3 nights and I've been there before. Since I was traveling by myself I wanted to be somewhere fun and close to the tourist centre. It was definitely a smoker hostel but at night it felt very safe and the workers and other people staying there were very friendly. It was really close to all the touristy things and very easy to get to and find from Centraal Station, the main train station. As for me though, if I had stayed any longer I would've wanted to be a little more removed from the kitschy tourist stuff but for what it was, it was fun.

If you're young and doing Europe on a budget then this is the place for you. We found the staff to be hospitable but the place dark and dingy for our liking mind you I'm in my 30's and have got use to the quality of hotels in NZ.

If you don't mind sharing a bedroom, you're relaxed and easy going there is nowhere better to stay in the world. It's ridiculously cheap, hassle free and a really good vibe. It's close to the Grasshopper pub/coffee shop & the red lights and the main square is only 2 minutes the other way. Lots more to see and do outside of the hostel, 24 hour bar and internet access inside, cool people - highly recommended.

Awful terrible hostel. We booked a room for 6- there only turned out to be 4 of us though. Amsterdam was full so two others were crammed into our cell. We were 4 gents, some other bloke who arrived at 4 am and left at 630, and a poor poor Argentinian girl who got stuck in a room with 5 strange men. I cannot believe a hostel would put one girl in with 5 men- was utterly horrified! We tried to make her feel safe though and she seemed OK. The worst was yet to come though, this hostel is infested with fleas! We all woke up with bites, and when I got home they were still jumping around me. Am boiling all mu clothes. cannot recommend you avoid this hostel enough though- an absolutely dire place!

I stayed at the flying pig mid July with friends because one of us was getting married, it was indeed a stag do but not to be the usual boozing you would expect more of a chilling smoking trip. Anyway, we were all from Wales and decided not to speak in our native language (welsh) but spoke English in order to communicate to others. Sadly, both staff and guests at the flying pig downtown ignored us thinking we were English football hooligans (due to the england/Holland match that week) this upset us as we expected to stay at a friendly place. So if you want to stay at a place that stereo-types and treats you like crap even if you are not even from the country go to the flying pig down town.

However, we spent the last couple of days in the flying pig 'beach' part of Amsterdam, very nice place, but very little to do in that part of town so it was a little boring.
