“Great Hostel - No for everyone.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 19, 2009

Had a great stay. It was a bit on the pricier side for European hostels. Rooms were nice and clean. Hostel staff was helpful. Computers were not functioning well. The bar was certainly the happening place. Packed and nosiy until at least 2AM. I enjoyed it but it may not be for everyone. A lot of US folks around college age.

Everybody in amsterdam or who wants to go there knows flying pig.. so here is my take.
It has a good downstairs bar area with lotta people (nice crowd). it is very convenient and close to the train station and all the main sites
it kinda gets rowdy and noisy (this could be a + or - depending on u)
breakfast was good..
the rooms were not that great.. they were small and not well furnished
it was expensive :(.

This place is right in the middle of downtown and very loud if you plan on sleeping. There is no hangout room except for the bar. The bathrooms and showers were all pretty dirty. We got moved to this hostel form the uptown flying pig which was under construction. Was not impressed by this hostel.

A great place to meet other travellers. The hostel staff are friendly and helpful and always greet you with a smile. Breakfast included was a simple fare but enough to get you going. The heater died on the night we arrived but was promptly fixed. We stayed in a private ensuite room, it wasn't flash but it did the job.

The Flying Pig is in a really great spot. I stayed in an 8 bed dorm and it was clean and alright to sleep in. Shower rooms outside the room (rather than just 1 in it) would cut down waiting about for your turn, but not a massive deal. Perhaps not as cheap as it could be but the breakfast was OK.

Absolutely loved it here! i've been and stayed twice now, and both times its been great with the staff just being fantastic and so helpful...

the breakfast is great, you can literally help yourself to a variety of cereals, breads, toasts and pastries and then have a tea coffee etc with it. for the amount you pay per night it really is a great breakfast, i've been to hotels with less on offer....!!

the location is brilliant too, its on a high street with loads of shops and leads to the Damrak i think its called, a big main square that branches off to everywhere you'd want to visit.

Like other people have said, if your a traveller who'd be desperate for the internet, then be prepared to wait as someone is always on all computers with other people waiting on standby! the only thing i'll say bad about this place, is on our first day, we put our bags on or by our beds, and i had a bag of stuff and with this, i'd brough two books along to read on the plane. As someone else in the room was leaving, when they cleaned they took my books, assuming they were part of their library! i never got them back, but hey s*** happens its only books...oh and dont hang out in the bar/main area if your not there for the weed, it really is non- stop smoking central!

overall a brilliant place to go =)

Only stayed one night here went passing through Amsterdam, and chose not to stay here again on my way back through Amsterdam. It's fine for what it is: a youth hostel full of pot smokers. It's a bit dingy and run down for my hostel standards, but the staff were friendly and the beds and bathrooms were generally clean. There is an age limit, something like 35, and you absolutely must not mind pot smokers as there is a constant cloud in the lobby, which doubles as the lounge and bar. They do have a few good beer selections on tap, so it's actually a pretty cool place to hang out, smoke a joint, meet English soccer hooligans partying for the weekend, and watch the world wander by on the walkstreet on which it's located. The location is nice, just a few blocks from the central train station, and a few blocks in the other direction to the Red Light District. It is a fairly loud hostel, so if you want to stay up late and party this is for you. If you're trying to get some rest before an early morning flight, I'd avoid it.
