“Awesome party hostel close to the train station”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2011 via mobile

Clean big hostel, bathrooms have hairdryers which is good and never had to wait for a shower. Stayed here 3 nights and everyone of those nights it was really busy in the bar. Staff are really nice and helpful. We are a couple and had our own double bed in a 14 bed dorm which was cool. Except for one of the nights when we came home to find someone else asleep in our bed! the staff quickly sorted it for us and even changec the sheets.

Wouldnt recommend this hostel if you want a quiet place to stay. We would definately come back, it is a great hostel to be based at to experience Amsterdam.

The Flying Pig was a great hostel to stay at, so long as you don't mind the smoking room with lots of stoners. The rooms were clean and there was a locker under the bunk beds (lock needed, but you can rent from the front). The beds were pretty comfortable as well and we had a washroom & shower in the room. The room was cleaned each day a new person moved in which is pretty often. The stairs up to the rooms are steep but you are in amsterdam and these are how the houses are built!

The smoking room was pretty much busy all the time with people smoking up and smoking cigs. The air gets pretty thick in there but there is a small deck at the back where you can get some fresh air.

The main floor has a bar with great specials every day. It was a great place to chill and have a drink. We played pool in the front area and on some nights they bring in a DJ who plays some great music! They also serve breakfast in the morning, there were some pastries, cereal, toast and some fruit. We did discover a bakery that makes delicious buns and pastries on the main Damrak road (don't remember the name but you can just walk down Damrak a bit and you'll see it). The free breakfast was nice but the bakery is worth the money and it's not expensive! They also have free earplugs at the front desk which is a great thing to have at a hostel!

Overall the FP was in a great location and close to everything. I would stay here again!!

I've stayed here a few times, its a great hostel, with a great staff.

Each room has a locker under each bed. The beds themselves are very clean, have comfortable comforters, sheets, a nice large pillow, and a plug.

The rooms are diligently cleaned daily.

This is definitely one of the places you should stay in Amsterdam.

Breakfast is simple. Internet is free (via wifi), but somewhat slow. There is a bar and smoking area, but no food provided (except breakfast).

They also have private rooms, but they go quick.

Only downside to the flying pig: Price.

If all you want to do is get high in Amsterdam this is the place for you. If you have a little bit of culture and class then this is not the place for you. The rooms were stayed in the some what spacious but that's the only positive thing. It was located next to the street and with the street sweeper going back and forth at 8am every morning expect to be woken up often. The bathroom could do with a separation barrier between toilet and shower. Staff were also pretty useless - they were probably high from sitting too close to the smoking room.

Great spot to party and base yourself while exploring Amsterdam. I stayed here for a week. Went out to a couple of clubs but stayed in for most of my trip because it was so much fun! You should be ready to meet new people when coming here, don't shy away simply because you might not be able to find room for your whole group to be together in one space when in the lounge area. No complaints at all, everyone was extremely friendly, the atmosphere was live, and the bartender was pretty hot.

Room Tip: Four person rooms should be the quietest during the night. Lower floors mean less steps, but closer...

The flying pig is one of Europe's top hostels and for good reason. It is extremely unique, well priced, central, and lots of fun. The downtown location offers walking distance to pretty much everything you need and more including an in house smoke room/club. Fair warning though this club gets VERY noise until about 4am every night. If you are looking for high-school thru college aged party with cheap drinks, pool, and wifi the downtown location is for you. An equally fun, but less noisy experience would be the uptown location located closer to the "Van Gogh" museum and " I Amsterdam" sculpture.

Room Tip: All rooms are about the same.

There were great things about this hostel. Nice staff, early check-in, comfortable indoor smoking area. However, there were also a lot of so-so things. The outdoor smoking area was small and crowded, and I like to smoke outdoors when the weather is nice. The bathrooms were kind of gross, but that's to be expected with so many people. The bedrooms were really gross - again, expected, but I still didn't like it. My friend who stayed in the basement claims to have gotten bedbugs there (bleh!). The staff were really super nice, but not so knowledgeable. I asked a woman at reception about the pub-crawl, and she couldn't tell me much except bad directions. She had even run out of the pamphlets. There were too many (stoned) people all over the place to really have a conversation. I canceled my 2nd night there.
Like I said before, all the so-so aspects of this hostel are because it's so big, so I recommend staying at a smaller hostel.
