“Neil Cowley trio, concrete & glass.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 28, 2013 via mobile

Concrete & glass might sound a little austere, not here, the setting, looking out onto the wonderful water scape, that is Amsterdam's backdrop, this concert venue packs a punch.
We came to enjoy the truly magnificent Neil Cowley Trio, playing their set in the intimate black & red studio, atop the building. Now when arriving the place seemed a little deserted, almost beginning to feel like we entered a scene from a film noir ! Being adults, we followed the noise, & came across the venues top floor bar, with awesome views of the twilight city before us.
Sitting at a table for four enjoying wine, nibbles, wine & the view of Neil,Rex & Evan, getting it on, in a Dutch building made for art, best night out .
The walk back to the hotel the only drawback, our problem, we was drunk !

“The one stop in Amsterdam for quality music performances”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 8, 2013

The view from the place is enough to take your breath away. Which other venue can boast of views of the harbour, along with the passing trains and trams? When the curtains behind the stage are drawn, this view can also be blocked. But on nights when they leave the curtains open, it is a sight to behold.

Then we come to the programming. The fare on offer ranges from straight ahead jazz to improvised music and from Brazilian and African music to big bands. I have seen an amazing range of concerts here - Esperanza Spalding, Kurt Elling, Lonnie Liston Smith, Boubacar Traore, Henry Threadgill, Egberto Gismonti...the list is endless....The finest of the finest....

They have a great restaurant too, where you can dine before the concert. On special nights, they have themed drinks and djs for the after party. They had caipirinhas and a great dj from Sao Paulo after a Brazilian tribute concert...a week later another great local dj and mojitos after a Cuban concert!

A short walk along the water, behind the Amsterdam Central station will bring you to this beautiful building. On days with bad weather, the tram 26 will bring you here too from the Central Station. Trams run till way after the concert is done. So public transport is easy....

A not to be missed venue. Take note that the venue remains shut between half July and half August. For NL residents, there is a fantastic offer of a Bim card which for a fixed fee per year allows you to see virtually every concert that they program!

“It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 27, 2012

My favorite live Jazz Club in Amsterdam!!.......before the show a great meal in the club restaurant. they change the menu quite often according to the seasons........the last time the Chef must have been madly in love cause the food was amazing!!!.........then what"s it all about ...the JAZZ !!!!!!
beautiful room all around the stage where you can see and enjoy pure magic!!....top of the bill artists like Joe Lovano, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Roy Hargrove, Al Foster etc etc. what more can a jazz lover expect??........and they play for 1.30 min or more!!!!..

Can't wait to come back!!

“Nice concert and dinner with a view”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 6, 2012

We found that there was going to be an Egyptian Jazz concert during our stay in Amsterdam and decided to check it out. Even though we couldn't understand the band members because they spoke in Dutch, the music was enjoyable and the concert was just the right length. We made reservations to eat at the restaurant afterwards, and I had a nice meal with great service (as usual) and a lovely view looking out over the harbor. Go if you get the chance.

“Look no further for outstanding jazz”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2011

Bimhuis ("bim house") on Amsterdam's IJ River is one of my all time favorite venues. We listened to Jeremy Pelt and his quintet play a fantastic set here. After the show, he took a few minutes to speak with us on stage. How cool is that?

Contrary to another review, it's not hard to find Bimhuis. Take either the 25 or 26 tram one stop from Centraal Station to the Muziekgebouw Bimhuis station. The listening area is configured with several rows of seats and a few tables up near the back. Outside the listening area is a cafe/bar. The overall setting is a very intimate one, with no seat more than perhaps 10m from the stage.

If you are traveling to Amsterdam, try to make Bimhuis one of your stops. Note that there have been fair number of experimental jazz offerings, so check out the groups first if you're not into that sort of thing.
