“Courage and survival in one building”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 28, 2013 via mobile

This was my first visit and will not be the last one. Whenever I get the chance to visit Amsterdam I will do this again.
Beautiful, historical and still alive with all of us visiting an important part of Amsterdam!

“Get the audio and you'll enjoy your visit”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 19, 2013

This Sephardic synagogue has a rich history, and we learned so much listening to the audio. There are audio stations throughout the entire complex. The synagogue is actually located in a compound complete with a mikvah (you can view it through a window.)
If you are into Jewish history, you will enjoy this.

“A Treasure”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 5, 2013 via mobile

I didn't do much research prior to visiting and was really impressed by the beauty and history of the synagogue. The audio guide was quite informative and lets you pick and choose what you listen to. The treasury is worth viewing to see some really special pieces. The ticket also includes admission to the museum next door which provides a ton of detail on the Jewish faith and population in The Netherlands.

“a look into the past, but from the present”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 2, 2013

There was a 12 EUR fee to enter but its' worth it because it's good for a month, and entry into the museum across the street. An audio guide in English and a Kippah is provided at the front entrance. Bike parking is available right outside the entrance too. The Esnoga aka temple building is from another time and the inside is vast with a bima made of wood. The floors are wood and have sand on them and the pews are wooden too. You can sit on one of the benches and contemplate the history and area from 1600's until present day. There is a very informal and relaxed atmosphere of peacefulness for people of all cultures and religions to enjoy. Very inspiring in the quiet nooks and areas towards the back with the Sukkah and Buttresses.

“My step-grandfather was Bar Mitzvah here about 125 years ago”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 26, 2013

I have been returning to this Sefardic synagogue regularly since the first time I traveled to Amsterdam 43 years ago, and there is some sentimental attachment, since my grandmother's second husband was born in Amsterdam and became a Bar Mitzvah at this synagogue. That it is still used for worship services all these years later is a really good reason to tour this rather simple building--for its historical value, whether or not you are Jewish.
