“Good food. Good service!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 7, 2013

It was my first time eating Ethiopian food. I wasn't sure what to expect, but thank you Marise Silveira, who was the manager/waitress at the restaurant. She made it a memorable experience, and I would definitely go there again.
Not sure what to order? Ask Marise! Very good food, at reasonable price.

“For Eritrean/Ethiopian food fans”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 8, 2013

I confess I am addicted to this kind of food, and hard to find (at least a good restaurant) in plenty of cities/countries.

I was glad last year that I found this one in Amsterdam. Food is outrageously great. Atmosphere is really great. Be sure to visit if you enjoy spicy "hands-on" food. Honestly one of the best places to eat in Amsterdam, specially with a group of friends.

“Out of the ordinary.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 23, 2013 via mobile

We found Serengeti by accident, looking for somewhere to eat. Most places nearby looked rather ordinary but this restaurant had bright, colourful decor, and the lady we met outside (who turned out to be the chef's girlfriend) did a very good job of tempting us in. The African tea and quinoa beers were good; we hadn't tried them before. The main courses were tasty, with interesting flavours and were very fresh. The salads were good. You are likely to wait a while for your food, but it was a pleasant place to wait, and the service is very friendly.

“Not for the faint hearted.....”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 18, 2012

Having had African food many times but never Ethiopian, my husband and I decided to try the Serengeti. Unwisely as it turned out. The food was mediocre, there was very little difference between the lamb my husband ordered and the sliced beef (which in fact was minced beef) which I ordered. Not sure whethere the sauces were the same but one couldnt differentiate. The large pancake type bread which the food was served on was cold and hardly edible. We left feeling that we had had a starter, rather than an evening meal. Would not return, nor recommend to any friends.

“Sensational”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 16, 2011

Rented a houseboat in the Zeeburg (North East ish) area of Amsterdam and stumbled upon this restaurant. There wasnt a great deal of choice locally, but this place looked inviting, was almost full (usually a good sign) and the menu was completely new to us.

Upon entering, the decor is bright yet not too much. The tables are close, but wasnt a problem. For want of a better word or two, I would describe it as a 'happy place to be'.The tables were populated by mostly younger (20-30's) people.

The one 'front of house man' quickly had us seated and we had a beer in hand a couple of minutes later. We ordered from the small menu and watched the food being lovingly prepared in the seemingly spotless kitchen, which can be seen from the restaurant.

We tried a couple of main dishes (which are translated into English on the menu) which arrived on a huge platter covered in a type of flat-bread, with the food on top. The portions werent huge, but were beautifully presented and served with a number of 'sides' dotted around the platter, such as lentils and vegetables, so we didnt go hungry.

I cant stress how good the food tasted. Plenty of spices, but not hot and different to anything we had eaten before. And you use the bread to eat; No 'gobblin rods' required.

In summary - A must if local and from previous experiences of Amsterdam city centre restaurants, worth taking a 10 min tram ride out of town. Around 1/2 a mile away is a local micro-brewery based in a Windmill. So start your night there (if you can stand the dutch/belgian style blonde lager) and end it at the Serengeti.

We had 2 or 3 bottles of beer each and the food as described. Including tip, we left a mere 50 euros down, so pretty good value for a really pleasant experience.
