“good”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 20, 2014

This is one of the best museums I have ever visited. I have been to a few and after four hours I had to leave only because I wanted to be elsewhere.

“Traveling Around the World”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 18, 2014

Imagine going into a small museum in many countries and seeing the best each has to represent their music, culture, etc.Now imagine doing that for several countries.

Now imagine they are all in one place. That is the Tropenmuseum.

A coupon for free admission for the month of December made this an even better way to spend an hour or two.

“I am very glad that I made the effort to visit this brilliant museum.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 10, 2014

I love history and culture; hence why I travel. So, I was on the fence as to weather I wanted to venture (quite out of my way) to see this museum. It is located a bit off the map from the normal locations of the museums in Amsterdam. However, you can easily get to the museum on city tram #9 (after a 15 minute ride from the train station or city center). It is just a short walk from this tram stop.

Once you arrive you will see a very large building (a bit unassuming from the outside) which houses the huge museum (it spans 4 large floors). The museum is based on the history of Dutch exploration, trade, and colonization in the tropics. It does an excellent job of highlighting the history of Dutch interaction with the advent of trade, and of its colonies in which the Dutch founded in foreign lands. However, where it really shines is the amount of artifacts that are displayed within the collection.

The museum highlights different areas of the tropics and gives a overview of the interactions of the Dutch (both positive and negative) and then highlights the culture of each place. The African exhibits were extremely well done. As an American citizen, I love how bluntly honest they display their roll in the slave trade and the negative effects of colonial rule. They do not sugar coat it or apologize; they let you make up your own conclusions. That is what museums should do. I applaud them for that!

They have a large collection of artifacts from Africa, India, Central America, South America, Indonesian, Caribbean, and Pacific Islands. They present them in exhibits that look, feel and even smell of the geographical location in which the artifacts are being displayed. You will find everything from dress, food, household items, celebratory and religious artifacts. Very creative and will keep both children and adults interested.

Two of the highlights that you really should take some time in exploring is the extremely well done musical instrument exhibit and the temporary displays and exhibits! They also have a really nice gift shop with some very interesting objects and souvenirs that are not the typical Amsterdam kind.

“just fantastic...or better”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 5, 2014

This is one of the best museums I have ever visited. I have been to a few and after four hours I had to leave only because I wanted to be elsewhere. The Amsterdam card got me in here free. Three floors of very interesting things about Dutch colonies and other things. The actual building is fantastic and just how lucky are the Dutch to have these great buildings. We Brits knock them down !!!!

“If you can only go to one place, that's the one!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 29, 2014

This is one of the most interesting museums I have ever been. It reproduces homes, bars, markets, views and smells from some tropical cities around the world. It is very interactive and very well organized. First time I went there I spent almost the whole day! It also has a good cafeteria.
