“A gem in every little detail”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 13, 2014

An amazing place where you simply don't know where to look- the wonderful exhibits or the building itself, which is gorgeous, from the ceilings and staircases down to the elephant door handles at the toilets.

“My kinds of rooms! Soulmade exhibition”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 13, 2014

Suggest you go and see the "Soulmade" exhibition in the Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam. Why? Because it combines and contrasts ethnographic objects and modern art in a very interesting manner. I would love to live in one of those rooms. They made me dream away, thinking of faraway places and of the people who lived there, handling these objects. The contemporary paintings by Jasper Krabbé provide a super backdrop. Well done! Just what an ethnographic/world museum should be all about.

“"Unknown to many people"”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 8, 2014

This museum unfortunately is unknown to many people. It should't be that way. The grand building is beautiful old fashioned architecture. The permanent exhibition is mostly about the former Dutch colonies, with a historical note from both perspectives. To my surprise, I run into a statue of Santo Nino de Atocha and la Virgencita de Guadalupe too in the area dedicated to Mexico, it was nice to see a little bit of the history of Mexico (it made me feel like I was home). Finally, when I visited this museum there was a special exhibition of "National Geographic photography" ~ Very interesting and enjoyed the movie about finding the the woman form the famous picture "Afghan girl". This museum is worth a visit by young and old.

“A genuinely fun museum”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 6, 2014

The Tropenmuseum is genuinely one of the most enjoyable museums I've ever been to. Expensive ticket price, but certainly well worth it. There is a good collection, combined with some very good displays and interactive material. The North African gallery is particularly worth visiting. The material is well-displayed with tickets in both Dutch and English.

The museum café is also quite pleasant with a range of foods to accompany the rather exotic contents of the museum and is admirably well-priced for the café of a major museum.

It's important to note though that, outside school holidays, the museum is closed on Mondays - whatever tourist brochures may say.

“A Worthwhile Place to Visit”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 31, 2014

This is a fabulous ethnographic museum with a wealth of information (in Dutch and English) and artifacts from many cultures, not just those that the Dutch had colonized. Plan on spending at least two to three hours as you select which exhibits to see, enjoy, and learn.
