“Tourist hotel, good location, STEEP stairs”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 6, 2013

This is basically a tourist hotel w/ small, plain room, lumpy bed and a small, but adequate bathroom. It's saving grace is that it's in a great location, right on a canal & close to everything. And the price was less than half that better hotels in the same area. Biggest drawback - no elevator & 2-4 flights of very steep, narrow stairs. Best for young folks w/ light luggage.

The location is excellent and you can walk almost everywhere from here. The staff are helpful and friendly and it has the ambience of a family hotel. It was like staying in someone's home, which has positives and negatives.

Stayed the nights of Sept 26 & 27. The location was excellent, never had a problem walking to the main sites. The room was comfortable and extremely clean. The bathroom was large and modern. I will definitely be staying here next time I visit Amsterdam and highly recommend it.

Arived at hotel early on Saturday 21 Sept., c. 11am, well before the 2pm check-in time. Helpful receptionist gave us a map, let us store our luggage and suggested 3pm may be a better time to check in, as the hotel was very busy. Not a problem, as we'd expected to look round for a few hours anyway. We arrived back at the hotel at 2.20pm and waited in lounge (with TV and drinks) until 4.50pm, which was much, much longer than it should have been. The agency room cleaner was blamed for his slowness and the proprieter did check on him a couple of times. We were very patient, but also in need of some comfort having just completed a one week bike and barge trip - aches and pains to deal with!! Hopefully, this is not the norm. for the hotel, which was very nice apart from the huge check-in delay - rooms were clean, beds big, breakfasts good and plentiful. Watch out for the stairs - the hotel does warn about them being steep and narrow and it's telling the truth. We were on the top/third floor, so we know - luggage is pretty difficult to manoeuvre up and down. Quiet, peaceful hotel though and conveniently located.

The reception area is pleasant and welcoming. The room that was allocated was amazing with a wonderful canal view. The only problem was that it was on the 3rd floor. The stairs are steep and lethal (as in all small Amsterdam hotels) There is no lift (which we knew) and there is no assistance with baggage. Definitely not suitable for anyone with mobility problems. At age 70 I struggled to take my bags up 3 vertical flights and then struggled down again the following day. Not good for the heart. The breakfast was plain and dull but more than adequate. There is a pleasant lounge with a small stock of reading books and plenty of tourist information available. There is also tea and coffee on demand - well almost on demand. It depends if reception is busy.

Room Tip: Low floor rooms are essential if you have mobility restrictions but the high floors have better view...

Arrived at around 11 am to find that we would have to wait until 4 pm to check in as the room wasn't ready. Our room was clean but tatty - my pillowcase had a hole worn in it! Beds were uncomfortable.

Chose Wiechmann through website as it looked charming and not too pricey. The buildings were indeed charming and the location was excellent. Taking the ample breakfast overlooking the canal was a delight. On the downside, we struggled with the stairs somewhat (incredibly steep and narrow) but I guess that's a feature of these houses and not much to be done about it. We were on the top floor so it was a long haul with our bags. It also meant our room was incredibly hot - we had the windows open the whole time and the fan going a lot of the time. It would have been nice to have a view of the canal, but at least being on the top floor we could look over the roof (and into the neighbours' kitchens!) instead of at another wall. Also disappointed to find that our room, booked as a double, was actually twin-bedded. Mattresses very soft.

The bathroom was clean, shower worked perfectly, as did the tv.
The lounge was comfortable and my partner loved the resident dog!
I would stay again if we could have an actual double room, with a canal view.

Room Tip: Try to get a room with a view. The stairs really are steep and narrow - avoid if that's going to...
