“Great Great Great Small Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2012

If you are looking for something different than the big hotel chains which are all the same - go for the Wiechman - family type, great lobby - lovely canal view rooms, clean, large - perfect location just on the corner of the 9th street block - great value for money

The breakfast can be a bit better - add some decent coffee and yogurts and it will be perfect

Room Tip: Room 136 is perfect as the strairs are big

The hotel is in the perfect location for visiting anywhere in Amsterdam. We could easily walk to all the sights recorded by other reviewers. The decor and furnishings of our bedroom and the public areas and the steep stairs added to the Dutch experience and were really appreciated. We had a double room with canal view on the third floor and we were very comfortable.
The downstairs toilet, lounge, breakfast room and our bed and bathroom were clean and well maintained. There was an ample supply of very hot water even on the top floor. Breakfast was adequate and it was good to watch Amsterdam cycling to work in the mornings. It was pleasant to sit and drink tea with friends and read in the lounge.
All in all the three day stay enhanced our enjoyment of Amsterdam. It was great. All the staff were friendly and helpful and the dog was no problem
I suppose, if you were not fit, you should request a room on a lower floor!

Room Tip: Choose a room with a view and bear in mind the steps are traditional and very steep (48 to third flo...

Thank you for your review and I really wish that there was someway of fitting in a lift.
We have been trying for 2 generations now and it will just not work :-)

First, let me say that any shortcomings in this hotel are more than made up by the amazing location. Prisengracht is a very pretty canal and the neighborhood is families and small cafes and bistros. An Albert Hein (grocery store) is about 1 1/2 blocks away, Anne Frank House is a few blocks down the canal, West Church, North Church are easy walk as is the Rijksmuseum, Spui, Dam, Floating Flower stalls, etc. It is about three or four blocks from Leidenstratt tram so it is easy to get back and forth to the station. I do not think you can stay at a better location unless you want to be literally in the middle of all the noise and crowds !

You will want to spend your time exploring the city and won't want to spend a lot of time sitting in your hotel room, and this is the perfect place to base your self if you can live with the less than perfect room.

Although the lobby and breakfast room and sitting room have lots of antiques and are charming, my double room was rather spartan. Maybe some of the other rooms are nicer. A mattress that was more like a giant sponge, a shower that could use a good dose of Chlorox to remove the black mildew in every crevice, and barely enough room for one person's stuff. Daily maid service provided change of towels but I couldn't see evidence hat any actual cleaning (ie, of bathroom) was done. View from my room was into the "smoking area" in between the other buildings of this rambling hotel. Walls were thin and i could hear people in the rooms above and below and to the side of me, but even on the weekend no one was too loud too late. Breakfast was two kinds of bread, two kinds of cheese, two kinds of cold cuts, canned peaches, hard boiled eggs, OJ, milk, coffee and tea. Oh, and to confirm other reviews, the stairs are VERY steep, narrow, winding and rather scary to carry luggage down two flights (and I am not averse to stairs - but these were excessively difficult)

Staff was polite but I never saw the same people two times in a row, over my three night stay. I hear this place is family run, but not sure if any of the staff I saw were part of the family.

Room Tip: There are a few rooms that overlook the canal - but I think the vast majority do not.

Dear Ms.,

I am sorry to read that your room was not cleaned the way we think it should be done. Please let me know when you were here exactly and in what room you were so that I can find out who the cleaner was?
Did you let my people at the front-desk know about this problem? If so, what was done about it?

Thank you much for your review and I hope to see you in my hotel on another trip to Amsterdam.

Kind regards,

John Boddy, manager.

If you're good at climbing stairs and you love getting greeted by a sleepy doggie at the door, then you will not regret staying here.

Wiechmann is tantamount to staying with friends or family in Amsterdam. You won't be disappointed by anything-- the rooms are a bit worn, but just like in a house, that's only because they're well-loved. Visit if you want the relaxed, unpretentious Amsterdam experience. Perfect for families, older couples, and younger couples, too.

And don't miss breakfast! It's worth it to eat canalside, watching the Dutch cycling to work as you leisurely munch away.

We booked the hotel for three nights. On arrival, we were told that due to an error in processing our booking we didn't have a room for the 2nd of the three nights... not exactly what you want to or expect to hear when you have just arrived at your destination, ready to start your holidays.
We were told we would have to speak to the manager who wouldn't be available until 8am the next morning. The whole experience left a bad taste so rather than have the trip ruined we decided to cut our losses and move elsewhere and luckily found somewhere not too far away which was fantastic. Hotel has a huge alsatian in the reception so not for those who don't like dogs. Obviously we will not be returning.

Location was perfect. Staff was really helpful and friendly. I loved the building. So much character, it was fun exploring. Only reason I gave it 4/5 is because our bed was not so comfortable. It was short and the mattress was not good. Also, it's cool the buffet breakfast was included but was not great. However, the sitting area where you eat is really quaint - it's in the corner part of their hotel. Great view of the streets/canals. We stayed in a room away from the street so it was really nice and quiet. Their dog is AWESOME. He's adorable and super friendly. We were walking distance to everything we wanted to see, including the Anne Frank House and the Van Gogh Museum. High recommend !! Also loved the shower (we got a bathroom with a real shower head!)

This hotel is a charming, affordable hotel in a great location. The room & bathroom was of decent size. The room was clean & the housekeeping staff did a great job every day. The staff was friendly and helpfu. I love that the family dog lives there and greeted the guests every day. The thing to be aware of is that the steps are steep and depending on where your room is located you may have a lot of steps to climb. The breakfast was good: fresh fruit, toast, eggs, cereal, juice, coffee & tea, etc.

Room Tip: If you have difficulty doing a lot of steps you may want to ask for a room on a lower floor. I don...
