“Charming hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 16, 2013

Just had 3 nights .Had room 105 small but had a very comfortable bed but with access only on 1 side.Bathroom small but very clean and had everything you need.Room was at the back so no noise and a perfect nights sleep.Arrived in Amsterdam by train to central station and the day had shocking bad weather so no taxis.Used tram 2 which leaves you off 3 minutes from the hotel.
Breakfast was excellent as a continental breakfast .Plenty of choice to suit most tastes.
I love the narrow stairs but it is not for everyone. But full of the charm of dutch houses.
Location is excellent for all the museums minutes of a walk.Or minutes to the bus tram to any where .
Staff on reception were so pleasant and helpfull at all times, and being able to get a drink 24/7 was great.
Excellent coffee!!!!
Would go back to this hotel.

Room Tip: got bus back to the airport.Bus 197 every 15 mins 3 minutes from hotel for 4 euro!!!!!!

This hotel is located ideally for a city trip Amsterdam with the van Gogh, Stedelijk and Rijkmsmuseums nearby. For shopping there is the famous PC Hooftstraat. Culture fans have the Concertgebouw nearby so you will find something for every taste
On the downside you have tot acknowledge that it is a city hotel, so cramped space, hotel rooms and corridors..It is an old building so you hear every guest arriving in the night.
Room is small but clean, bathroom small but tidy, beds are o.k.
The most negative is the breakfast, very simple no English breakfast, only some bread, boiled egg and yoghurt.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 14, 2013

Stayed in this hotel for two nights with a friend in October, nothing to grumble about at all.

The location was excellent, a two minute walk from Van Gogh Museum, Rijksmuseum, Vondelpark and Central Amsterdam. It's located on a relatively quiet side street so external noise isn't as bad as you'd expect for the city centre.

The hotel has a nice boho feel, wooden floors and a small reading corner next to the entrace, the staircase to the first floor is steep and winding but they have a small lift.

The breakfast room wasn't as bad as people are making out, it can be crowded at times but it's served from 7-10 so plenty of time for everyone to get served. It's an ordinary continental buffet, tea - coffee - toast - eggs - crackers - cereal - fruit juice - cheese etc.

Stayed in a twin room and it was on the small side but the low price reflects this. Stayed in October so the room temperature wasn't too bad but I can imagine it being humid in summer.

All in all, nice bohemian hotel and good value for money, staff were very pleasant, would recommend.

Rooms are small but clean and comfortable enough but not especially good value. Breakfast was standard and served downstairs in a dark room, not a place to linger. Had to pay extra for basics like wifi. Just okay.

We were 4 female relatives traveling by train and stayed two nights at this hotel. It was comfortable, although our room had a double bed and two fold out single beds that were very near the floor. It worked for us, but might not work for everyone. It had a small balcony out french doors on the second floor. It had rather unusual wall decor (sort of "artsy"). The breakfast was served in the basement, which was very warm and crowded the first day and a little cooler the second day. We loved the location and the price was good. We like old buildings. It was clean. If you purchased a drink at the bar, you could have an hour of internet.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 1, 2013 via mobile

Week-end rates in Amsterdam appear to be at quite a premium in late August/early September. After spending 4 nights at another hotel where week-end accommodations were unavailable we were quite fortunate to have stopped by the Poet where another guest had just cancelled. Based on the high differential between the week-day rates and week-end rates I recommend all week-end visitors to Amsterdam either book several months in advance or plan visits for week-days. Based on Poet rates doing so could save 180% on the room rate and it appears the same differential could exist at other hotels as well.

Weaknesses of this hotel:
No air conditioning.
Breakfast is fairly basic continental although bread consists of toast.
Steep steps into entry.
No wash clothes.
No towel racks--only two hooks.
Limited space for toiletries.

Strengths:
Desk personnel extremely helpful.
Location in Museum quarter and on a lovely street the best in Amsterdam.
Room and bath size highly satisfactory.
Beautifully comfortable bed!

As previous review said, was unsure if I should change hotel after reading previous negative comments. However as only staying for one night as part of hotel break with dfds thought as long as room clean would be fine. For a 2 star hotel only fault I experienced was the toilet lid would not stay up!stayed in room 111, narrow modern room with big cosy double bed, clean linen and towels.Breakfast is continental variety of breads, cheese, meats, cereal, yogurt, fruit juice, tea and coffee, nice start to the day.this is our 4th visit to Amsterdam and have never stayed this side before.hotel situated in the museum district.lovely area.Fashion boutique shops street behind hotel, you will find Louis Vuitton, Chanel,Boss, Armani etc. (would be lovely if had the money, a girl can dream!)Heinken experience short 10min walk, we'll worth the 18 euros to get in or 25 euro with a burger drink on the rooftop terrace.Dam square longer walk 25 mins and then further 5 to red light district. There is a tram stop at end of hotel street but did not use as don't mind walking.Overall was a wonderful short stay and hotel is definitely worth the money we paid to stay here.Would recommend it!
