“Good location, bit of a dump”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 26, 2013

Bob's youth hostel has one good thing going for it - prime location. Apart from that the wi-fi works intermittently (don't count on it working if you need to book things) but there's a good cafe nearby with free wi-fi so that didn't bother us too much. The price was a bit too much for what we got (a broken locker which we had to pay a €10 deposit for the key, no towel - but you can pay for one which wreaks of smoke and no common areas that aren't smoking areas). Bed was comfy, shower hot but I would not return.

Myself and 5 of my close friends stayed at Bob's. After booking the trip last minute and arriving without accommodation sorted we roamed the streets until we found Bob's.

Well .. it was an interesting stay. It was cheap which was great, so we weren't expecting the Ritz as we walked upstairs. We shared a room with 11 other people (one of which was a VERY loud snorer) the beds were comfortable and the atmosphere was a laugh. We also had some very trippy paintings all around our bunks which made for an interesting nights sleep after taking some happy pills.

The state of the bathroom was pretty poor and with only 1 toilet to share between 16 .. it could be an awkward wait sometimes. The shower was pretty poor as well, I may as well have had my mates spit in my hair as that would have been more powerful and soaked me more effectively.

Breakfast. Now that was hilarious .. not just because we were on a come down and sometimes higher than a Somali on midday munchies.

The location however was great. Pretty much central to all the bars and coffee shops so you don't need to worry so much about taxi's and buses etc.

Cant complain all in all .. did what it said on the tin. Cheap stay, reasonable rooms, great location.

All 8 of us who stayed here got bed bugs, and it has been a major source of stress. (This was the only place we travelled to) The hostel itself felt very unclean and rundown but the location was good. The lobby and the place you can store your luggage are QUITE dingy. I've realized that bed bugs are a huge issue as a traveller, and so much harder to detect and get rid of than I ever thought. Bob's Hostel has obviously been affected by this issue that affects all travellers, and I want to tell everyone, if you sleeping in any bed other than your own at own - know how to look out for bed bugs and what to do to prevent them travelling with you!

Internet rarely works. Matresses are very narrow. Terrible feet smells. Weed smoke at lounge all day. Humiliating breakfast - tea, bread and jam, and egg. Same everyday. The staff is ok and the location is great. But for 32 euro a weekend night for a tiny bed with 20 ppl in a smelly room...i wouldnt bother unless optionless.

We stayed for 4 days in a room shared between 16 people. It was real fun sharing typical amsterdam stories with all our room mates.
Rooms aren't very clean but they're ok. Rooms are compossed by bunk beds and it has en suite bathroom.
The atmosphere in the living room/reception and dining room (this room is used for these 3 purposes) is awesome. Joint smokers can smoke after 11 a.m and the way people interact with each other its different and special.
Its location is awesome too. Its just in front of centraal station and just 5 minutes walk from dam square.
Generally employees are very nice.

Dirty. Breakfast is eggs, toast and some dodgy looking spread. Stayed in a 20 bed dorm with two toilets and two showers. Beds were squeaky and tough to get into. The only way to describe the stairs in the place is dangerous. The atmosphere downstairs is good at night, although you're only allowed drink your own spirits, beer must be bought at the bar. I'm not that fussy of a person, I lived out of hostels for a month while travelling but this is definitely the least impressive. If like us you're on a budget and you're happy roughing it out, it's fine but otherwise location is the only thing the place has going for it (10 min from Amsterdam Central). I have previously stayed in the Hans Brinker, while the Brinker is an extra 10 minutes of a walk, for the same price rooms it is worth the walk and staying in the Hans Brinker - they don't really deserve their 'worst hostel in the world' title, Bobs does!

I've stayed at bobs twice both in August 2 years apart and had good times on both occasions. Obviously the accommodation is basic and the showers weren't amazing (take flip flops) but the beds have got to be the comfiest I've ever slept on. Like a cloud. The second time i went we were in a room of 16 beds but i slept like a log. It's nice that they include a breakfast of toast, an egg and a hot drink, and they allow you to smoke in the lobby also. I enjoyed staying at bobs and I think that you get what you pay for but not in a bad way.

Room Tip: Get a smaller one if you can and if you book in advance you can request a room in the building where...
