“Amazing and helpful staff, great location. small rooms”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 week ago NEW

I stayed at Hoksbergen hotel for 5 days with a friend. The staff was so kind all along, printed for us maps and instructions to whatever place we wanted to go each day, rented us bikes and ordered tickets for us to museums and attractions. The breakfast was pretty basic, satisfying and tasty but there wasn't too much diversity. The room was clean and pretty, but very small. To those it is crucial for to have much space, this is not the right place. But there are so many advantages in this hotel that I certainly recommend it and the small rooms weren't a big issue. My stay at this hotel was definitely very pleasant and I was satisfied.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view to the canal.

Nice and helpful staff. Colorful hotel, steep stairs, small rooms, but inviting. Very good location, near the center and railway station. Good breakfast, free wi-fi. I like it and I recommend this hotel!

Modern, sparkling clean en suite shower room.

Really helpful and friendly staff.

Great range of discount leaflets and discount business cards.

Tourist map given and sights pointed out at check in.

My error in booking, corrected at no further cost.

5 minutes walk to Dam Square. All attractions and central Station within comfortable walking distance. No need to buy a bus/tram/train travelcard for daily use.

Very pretty and characterful location, in period property, canal side.

Good value for money for the location and continental breakfast.

Clean room, sheets and floors.

Good wifi - two hubs to cover all floors well. Free.

Can leave luggage and pick up later on the last day.

Yes, the rooms are small (and basic - except the top spec modern shower rooms which are lovely) and the stairs are steep. It's a canal house - they are going to be steep. There are no lifts - again, it's a canal house - no space to install one, even if they wanted to. It's great value money, given it's location and a good continental breakfast is included in the price.

Room Tip: Brave the stairs and get a twin room on level three or four. The walls are as built, so you will he...

We have just got back from a short break at this hotel, stayed there for two nights and are glad we didn't stay any more. We didn't pay much to stay here so didn't expect much really and it met our expectations.
The location is excellent, within easy walking distance of most attractions in Amsterdam; Dam Square, Central Station, Red light district etc. It is set on the side of a canal on a quiet street so was a great place to crash after a long day.
The staff were lovely, happy to help and nothing was too much for them. We stayed with a one year old, we knew there would be steep stairs and the staff were happy to help by storing the push chair downstairs for us. A good cot was provided for the baby however they did not have a high chair for the baby which was a small let down.
The breakfast was basic but adequate with the normal selection of cereal, bread and eggs. The dining area was small but functional and felt very friendly.
The room itself was the biggest let down, we expected it to be small as this is a canal house however it was not clean. The floor was dirty with bits all over the carpet, rubbish under the beds and there was a small stain on the bed sheets. The bathroom however was spotless and the wifi was good and free. We had room 4 on the first floor which did not have a nice view but that didn't bother us as this was just a place to sleep. The whole hotel had a bit of a smell to it which wasn't inviting however we noticed that a lot in the city.
There was no noise from outdoors however we found it difficult to sleep due to noise from other guests. The walls are very thin so we could hear people closing doors, talking, running water and coughing. We expect to hear some noise in a hotel however this was more than normal. The decor needed updating but this wasn't an issue as this is only a budget hotel.

Overall, you get what you pay for with this hotel, if you are looking for a place to sleep after exploring the city then it is perfect however don't expect luxury.

Room Tip: If you wish to avoid steep stairways ask for rooms 1-4 as these are on the first floor.

Best canal location, everything is accessible to walk to. Small but practical rooms, stayed there with a friend for three weeks and it became like home. We hired bicycles from reception and often had a chat when we came in of an evening. The staff were super friendly and was always able to answer any questions we had with things like specific cuisines to eat, laundromat & nightlife. The continental breakfast was great to have every morning while we planned our day and he didn't mind when we came down late :) The same guy serviced the room daily and was very polite

Within very easy walking distance of all major attractions, this hotel is great for the on-foot traveler. We stayed for 2 nights and found the staff to be very friendly and genuinely helpful.

The free breakfast is a very basic one - skip it and have some waffles/baked goods at one of the many nearby bakeries instead.

The rooms are very small and - like the breakfasts - basic. Don't expect stylish decor - this is not a luxurious stay, but rather a convenient place to crash after your daily adventures in the city.

Note that the walls are very thin, though - even though quiet in terms of street traffic, the in-hotel noises of walks and coughs and showers and bed springs are heard clearly in the rooms. That said, you'll probably find yourself so exhausted by Amsterdam that you fall into a deep sleep despite these noises.

Recommended for young travelers on a budget.

Room Tip: The stairs are helluva steep - try for room 1, 2 or 3 so you don't have such a climb each time.

Hotel Hoksbergen is about a 15 minute walk from Amsterdam Central station and is very easy to find, being situated alongside the Singel canal. The hotel itself is clean although it would definitely benefit from new carpeting throughout.

The hotel staff are very friendly and helpful. They will give you a map and explain the best places to visit if this is your first time in Amsterdam.

The rooms are basic but clean and are intended as simply a place to sleep. As with most buildings in Amsterdam, the stairs are near-vertical so you will need to be careful in traversing them.

The one downside is housekeeping tend to come round at around 9-10am, which was a little early for me.

I would definitely stay again at Hoksbergen.
