“Charming B&B”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 12, 2013

My husband, daughter and I spent 3 nights in the Mae West room. The room was large and the beds very comfortable. Shower and sink are in the room with the toilet in the hall but not shared with other guests. We were well aware of the climb to the 4th floor on a spiral staircase and therefore took it as part of the charm of staying in an authentic, Danish, 300 year old home.

Breakfast was wonderful. There were plenty of options and we enjoyed visiting with other guests and talking to the owner and her son. There were beautiful flowers on the table in the morning and we also found fresh flowers in our room upon returning the second day. Would definitely stay here again. Great value, location, close to the sites and restaurants.

We stayed here for a long weekend at the end of October. The place is run by Mary and her son Ernest and daughter Aneke, all of whom were extremely pleasant.

Positives: great location on the canal, comfortable beds over looking the garden, very nice breakfast, charming hosts.

Negatives: this is basically a B&B and there are 5 bedrooms in total, 3 of which are located on the 3rd storey and the last 2 on the 4th storey which is where we stayed. To get to the rooms you have to climb a spiral staircase all the way to the top which is a killer on the knees and very difficult if you have luggage. The rooms are a bit tired, with peeling plaster on the walls and there is no ventilation in the bathroom or wc so it is necessary to open the window to ventilate the room.

Room Tip: Rooms at the top are quieter and the John Wayne room has an ensuite, the other rooms are shared faci...

I have just spent 3 nights with my wife and 2 teenage daughters at the Keizershof hotel in Amsterdam. Having scanned through reviews here on Tripadvisor, I requested rooms as high up as possible, to avoid the street noise which some people talked about. (Actually the Keizersgracht turned out to be quiet). The de Vries family are very friendly and welcoming; breakfast is eaten in their living room at a large table with all the other guests, and tips such as good restaurants and deals are readily handed out. The rooms on the top floor (Mae West and John Wayne) are well appointed, with one en suite in J.W. and a toilet on the landing for MW, although no others share that landing. For those who are new to Amsterdam, the spiral staircase comes as great fun and a novelty for the first day and quite bothersome thereafter. This is the only way up and down, from basement to top floor! Fabulous if you are nimble, a no no if you have mobility issues. Great location and fabulous for young' uns who have never visited this wonderful city.

Have just returned after spending three nights at Hotel Keizershof. Very warm welcome, extremely helpful family run business. Good location for museums and trams very close by but my friend Alison and I walked mostly. Good restaurants nearby within walking distance. Excellent breakfast in large bright room with beautiful garden outside.

We had emails prior to our arrival and the owners gave us tram numbers and street directions. We arrived about 11.00 but we knew we could not have our room. Mother and son made us very welcome and gave us a map with directions to see the sights. Room on 3rd floor - I asked for room overlooking canal which we have. We came back at 3.00 and room was ready. The spiral staircases are small and steep but you are in Amsterdam in an old building with character. We are in the Charlie Chaplin room large clean and it has a hair dryer. We bought a bottle of wine and they offered us glasses. So helpful. Great location.

My wife and I enjoyed a two-nite stay in this wonderful BnB. Mary and son Ernest were a delight to meet and converse with before/after breakfast. Only a block away from train with regular routes from central station. Great location to walk to many Amsterdam museums and tourist attractions.

Room Tip: Mae West room faces the canal. If you want a great canal view, this is your room.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 1, 2013

My partner and I stayed here for a few nights however we were a little disappointed as we had very high expectations after reading the amazing reviews on Trip Advisor. Check in was very confusing… we arrived and the elderly lady who owns the BnB literally gave us a key then in broken English gave us some terrible directions. There are these tiny little windy stairs and about 5 floors of them so we lugged our 30 kilo suitcases up the stairs which was so exhausting and confusing when you don’t know where you are going. There wasn’t any help from the staff so that was a little disappointing. As others have mentioned, if you have any back or leg problems this is not the place for you as these stairs are insane. We got to the top and due to the terrible instructions we got lost and had to go back down and ask the lady again where our room was. By the time we finally got up there we were so exhausted. There were no room numbers only a different picture of celebrities on the doors which is also why we got so lost as we couldn’t understand what the lady was saying.

The location however was fantastic. Walking distance to many cafes, shops and restaurants and a short buggy ride away to the Red Light District. The other owners were very lovely and were quite concerned when I came down with a bad cold so that was nice. However at times they were a little intrusive, aka insisting we have the breakfast in the morning after we had planned to just get out and about in the morning. Another thing we were disappointed with was that it was literally freezing when we were there, like -5 etc however they wouldn’t put any heating on in the rooms so at night we really had to rug up to stay warm.

I probably wouldn’t stay again however it was an experience and the view from our room over the canals was incredible but like I said above if you have problems being mobile or are elderly this is not the place for you.
