“Nice Area Nice Hotel Chic & Basic”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 7, 2009

Stayed here with my wife.
Lovely hotel in a nice area.
Easy 5/10 minutes walk from Centraal Station. Easy to find.
Great view from rooms on the river.

Stairs are a little steep.
Note that if they haven't mentioned that breakfast is included do not assume. But for €7.50 I couldn't argue with the Cold Cut Buffet with all the usual bread, cheeses, Juices etc.

Only a 5 to 10 minute walk from the Red Light District and close to Tram Stops.

I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.

Location is good for some nice restaurants and bars around the Jordaan Area.
To get a feel of what the area is like see the following links:
http://www.jordaaninfo.com/
http://www.amsterdam.info/jordaan/

The room is cosy but the bathroom is more of a 2 star rating at best. No shower curtain so water pretty much goes all over the bathroom. Other than that the room itself is fine and comfortable with a 3 to 3.5 star rating.

We had room 321 which is the one pictured on their website. I have attached photo's from the room to give you and idea. Apologies for putting the pics of the bathroom up but would rather you all see what it is like prior to getting there.

Service was great.
Free internet access. We checked in online and they were happy to print out our boarding passes free which was a nice touch as some places I have stayed at charge it to your room or even charge you at the business centre.

I gave a 3 for the Room due to the bathroom. The room itself nice.

All in all I would be more than happy to stay ere again.

We booked based on the location, the price and the hotel’s website pictures which were nothing close to reality!

The things that bother me the most was that the room was tiny for the amount of money that we paid. The window was very small with no view at all (in fact we did have a view…the basement!!) and no natural light. We had no wardrobe so for 6 days we were keeping our clothes inside the luggage. The bathroom was fine, quiet small but practical and clean (they were changing the towels almost every day). Although, the quality and quantity of the breakfast was satisfying, I think that the chef needs some basic training of polite service. He was trying to be friendly but instead was rude and arrogant.

One of the good things was the location of the hotel. Very well situated, within walking distance from the main attractions, the Central Station and Dam Square. Also they had an amazing café machine…the espresso was really good!

I would advise that you check with them directly before you book and ask exactly what is it that you want.

The Good...Check in staff member was very friendly, location excellent and the reception and communal areas very nicely decorated. Bed comfortable and room clean.

The Bad...Room had a tiny, cell-like single window that was also filthy dirty, allowing very little natural light in. Showering was difficult because the shower partition was broken and half missing, allowing the bathroom to become soaked. Bathroom a bit mildewy. If you're over 5'9'' you won't be able to stand in the bath to shower.

The ugly..
Late arriving guests were allowed to make a great deal of noise until 1am. When staff were politely approached to assist, they were downright rude and unhelpful. The staff member that checked us out on the morning of the 4th of April was particularly unhelpful, rude, unfriendly and really needs some training in how to deal with customers. She expressed no regret or apology for the problems we encountered. We were offered a discount but I would have been happy with a polite apology and friendly service!

Perhaps we were just unlucky - there are some great aspects to this hotel and the breakfast buffet was lovely but there is no substitute for basic, polite service.

Chose this hotel for its very good price and stylish all-white rooms. We spent 3 nights here in February 2009 and were highly satisfied with the service: staff is friendly and helpful, breakfast (7,50 €) was very good, fresh and abundant. At any time of the day and night, you can go to the lobby for a free cup of tea/coffee/water and there's also free internet connection. Our Room was well-sized, with a window overlooking a "hanging garden" and a cozy balcony on the back; bathroom, although without window, was spotless clean. Another plus was the location: at a walking distance from city centre and station but on a very quiet and romantic canal. Would come back for sure!!!

We stayed at Chic & Basic from Good Friday to Easter Sunday 2009. We'd booked based on various reviews but also due to what we saw on the hotel website. The rooms are sold as modern and comfortable. The fact is that not all of the rooms are like this. We had booked a medium room via easytobook.com

When we arrived and checked in, we were taken to a first floor room. For those who have problems climbing stairs, please note that the stairs were extremely steep. The room didn't represent what the photos show on any of the websites (travel agents or the hotel site.) The hotel's own website makes no reference to the 1970's decorated rooms with murals of bunting and the Smurfs (!) on the walls. The room was dark, with brown carpets and it looked like a child had been drawing on the walls. We therefore disputed the booking and what we'd been promised and were given the response of "sorry we're full, and you didn't request a Chic & Basic room." We did book Chic&Basic - that's why we were standing in the hotel and also why they had a record of our booking. After much debate and negotiation we were given a small modern room on the ground floor. This was accessed via a door leading to an outside corridor with puddles on the floor. It had a very small window and no natural light. It was extremely small and the bathroom (shower and toilet) was tiny. Despite this, it was very clean, had a flat screen tv and a welcome pack (bottled water, shower gel and soap.) There was noise from an extractor fan at all times which could be annoying for light sleepers.

Breakfast is served until 10.30am and has an ok selection of breads, cheeses, meats and fruit. Tea, coffee and water are available all day and for free.

The majority of the staff were very helpful and friendly. They allowed us to check in early and store our bags once we'd checked out.

The location of the hotel is superb. It's quiet whilst only being minutes from Centraal Station.

If you get a decent room with a canal view, then it would be good value for money.

I'd advise that you check with them directly before you book that the modern rooms are available, and that you request and receive confirmation of exactly it is you want.

My roommate and I went to Amsterdam for a few days, and since this hotel was about the same price as a hostel we stayed there. It's in a great location a short walk from Central Station, and on a very quiet street. We stayed in one of their medium modern rooms, which had a giant canvas photograph as the headboard/light that had different colored lights behind it (they also have "vintage rooms" that are just like any other hotel.) The size of the room was comfortable for two people, and we had plenty of space to move around.

The best part about this place was the feeling of hospitality. There was always someone at the reception desk, and at any time of the day or night you could come to the lobby for a glass of water or free cup of tea or coffee from the machine that made lattes, espresso, and pretty much any other kind of coffee you could want. There is also a computer with internet access that you are free to use, and a comfortable lounge area to hang out. The staff is friendly and attentive, and made us feel welcome.

One thing I will point out is there is no elevator and the stairs are steep, so anyone with mobility problems would have difficulties. Otherwise a great place to stay!

The Chic and Basic hotels in Spain and Amsterdam are my favorite places to stay. With its minimalist but very stylish design is inspirational. The rooms may be small for my taste. The staff are courteous and welcoming. The bathroom toiletries are unique. Even there, the designers applied their creative zest for fun. I asked for extra soap bottles and I still smile when I use them at home. I had wanted to stay there again on my trip to Amsterdam this year but unfortunately they were fully booked and the price have gone up significantly as far as I can remember.
